This removes a bunch of options from the task builder interface that are irrelevant to the new scheduler and were generally unused anyway. It also bumps the stack size of new scheduler tasks so that there's enough room to run rustc and changes the interface to `Thread` to not implicitly join threads on destruction, but instead require an explicit, and mandatory, call to `join`.
Main logic in ```Implement select() for new runtime pipes.```. The guts of the ```PortOne::try_recv()``` implementation are now split up across several functions, ```optimistic_check```, ```block_on```, and ```recv_ready```.
There is one weird FIXME I left open here, in the "implement select" commit -- an assertion I couldn't get to work in the receive path, on an invariant that for some reason doesn't hold with ```SharedPort```. Still investigating this.
An 'overlong encoding' is a codepoint encoded non-minimally using the
utf-8 format. Denying these enforce each codepoint to have only one
valid representation in utf-8.
An example is byte sequence 0xE0 0x80 0x80 which could be interpreted as
U+0, but it's an overlong encoding since the canonical form is just
0x00.
Another example is 0xE0 0x80 0xAF which was previously accepted and is
an overlong encoding of the solidus "/". Directory traversal characters
like / and . form the most compelling argument for why this commit is
security critical.
Factor out common UTF-8 decoding expressions as macros. This commit will
partly duplicate UTF-8 decoding, so it is now present in both
fn is_utf8() and .char_range_at(); the latter using an assumption of
a valid str.
Bytes 0xC0, 0xC1 can only be used to start 2-byte codepoint encodings,
that are 'overlong encodings' of codepoints below 128.
The reference given in a comment -- https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3629
-- does in fact already exclude these bytes, so no additional comment
should be needed in the code.

Also adds static initializers to for atomic types. Since the fields are private, you aren't able to have `static mut` variables that are an atomic type. Each atomic type's initializer starts at a 0-value (so unset for `AtomicFlag` and false for `AtomicBool`).

This moves the raw struct layout of closures, vectors, boxes, and strings into a
new `unstable::raw` module. This is meant to be a centralized location to find
information for the layout of these values.
As safe method, `unwrap`, is provided to convert a rust value to its raw
representation. Unsafe methods to convert back are not provided because they are
rarely used and too numerous to write an implementation for each (not much of a
common pattern).
This is progress on #6790. I tried to get a nice interface for a trait to implement in the raw module, but I was unable to come up with one. The hard part is that there are so many different directions to go from one way to another that it's difficult to find a pattern to follow to implement a trait with. Someone else might have some better luck though.

This removes all the code from libextra that depends on libuv. After that it removes three runtime features that existed to support the global uv loop: weak tasks, runtime-global variables, and at_exit handlers.
The networking code doesn't have many users besides servo, so shouldn't have much fallout. The timer code though is useful and will probably break out-of-tree code until the new scheduler lands, but I expect that to be soon.
It also incidentally moves `os::change_dir_locked` to `std::unstable`. This is a function used by test cases to avoid cwd races and in my opinion shouldn't be public (#7870).

Simulates borrow checks for '@mut' boxes, or at least it's the same idea. This allows you to store owned values, but mutate them while they're owned by TLS.
This should remove the necessity for a `pop`/`set` pattern to mutate data structures in TLS.
Changes int/uint range_rev to iterate over range `(hi,lo]` instead of `[hi,lo)`.

* Updates the uses of `range_rev` to account for the new semantics. (Note that pretty much all of the updates there were strict improvements to the code in question; yay!)
* Exposes new function, `range_step_inclusive`, which does the range `[hi,lo]`, (at least when `hi-lo` is a multiple of the `step` parameter).
* Special-cases when `|step| == 1` removing unnecessary bounds-check. (I did not check whether LLVM was already performing this optimization; I figure it would be a net win to not leave that analysis to the compiler. If reviewer objects, I can easily remove that from the refactored code.)

Implement the difference, union, etc iterators with the help of a custom
iterator combinator with explicit closure environment. Reported issue #7814
to be able to use the std::iterator filter combinator.
If the TLS key is 0-sized, then the linux linker is apparently smart enough to
put everything at the same pointer. OSX on the other hand, will reserve some
space for all of them. To get around this, the TLS key now actuall consumes
space to ensure that it gets a unique pointer
Fixes most of #4989. I didn't add Persistent{Set,Map} since the only
persistent data structure is fun_treemap and its functionality is
currently too limited to build a trait out of.
Rust will allow to supply default methods for all four methods, but we
don't have any nice error reporting for the case where at least one
method must be implemented, but it's arbitrary which.
So in this case, we require `lt`, but allow implementing the others if needed.
It will be simpler to implement only one method for Ord, while we also
allow implementing all four Ord methods for semantics or performance
reasons.
We only supply three default methods (and not four), because don't have
any nice error reporting for the case where at least one method must be
implemented, but it's arbitrary which.
Moves multibyte code to it's own function to make char_range_at
easier to inline, and faster for single and multibyte chars.

This is a rewrite of TLS to get towards not requiring `@` when using task local storage. Most of the rewrite is straightforward, although there are two caveats:
1. Changing `local_set` to not require `@` is blocked on #7673
2. The code in `local_pop` is some of the most unsafe code I've written. A second set of eyes should definitely scrutinize it...
The public-facing interface currently hasn't changed, although it will have to change because `local_data::get` cannot return `Option<T>`, nor can it return `Option<&T>` (the lifetime isn't known). This will have to be changed to be given a closure which yield `&T` (or as an Option). I didn't do this part of the api rewrite in this pull request as I figured that it could wait until when `@` is fully removed.
This also doesn't deal with the issue of using something other than functions as keys, but I'm looking into using static slices (as mentioned in the issues).

memory as arguments. Rust should generally be free to assume that the arguments
it gets are valid input values, but the output of intrinsics::uninit() and
intrinsics::init() are not (e.g., an @T is just null, leading to an error
if we should try to increment the ref count).

They simply byte-swap an integer to a specific endian, like the hton* functions in C.
These intrinsics are synthesized, so maybe they should be in another file. But since they are just a single line of code each, based on the bswap intrinsics and aren't really intended for public consumption I thought they would fit in the intrinsics file.
The next step working on this could be to expose a trait / generic function for byteswapping.
Since ' ' is by far one of the most common characters, it is worthwhile
to put it first, and short-circuit the rest of the function.

I had to move the impl of FromIter for vec into extra::iter because I don't think std can depend on extra, but that's a bit messed up. Similarly some FromIter uses are gone now, not sure if this is fixable or if I made a complete mess here..

I haven't removed the `map` method, since the replacement `v.iter().transform(f).collect::<~[SomeType]>()` is a little ridiculous at the moment.
With these changes, exchange allocator headers are never initialized, read or written to. Removing the header will now just involve updating the code in trans using an offset to only do it if the type contained is managed.
The only thing blocking removing the initialization of the last field in the header was ~fn since it uses it to store the dynamic size/types due to captures. I temporarily switched it to a `closure_exchange_alloc` lang item (it uses the same `exchange_free`) and #7496 is filed about removing that.
Since the `exchange_free` call is now inlined all over the codebase, I don't think we should have an assert for null. It doesn't currently ever happen, but it would be fine if we started generating code that did do it. The `exchange_free` function also had a comment declaring that it must not fail, but a regular assert would cause a failure. I also removed the atomic counter because valgrind can already find these leaks, and we have valgrind bots now.
Note that exchange free does not currently print an error an out-of-memory when it aborts, because our `io` code may allocate. We could probably get away with a `#[rust_stack]` call to a `stdio` function but it would be better to make a write system call.

I almost got locked out of my machine because I misunderstood the purpose of the function and called it with a limit of uint::max_value, which turned this function into an almost endless loop.
Instead of determining paths from the path tag, we iterate through
modules' children recursively in the metadata. This will allow for
lazy external module resolution.
`max_by` method returns the element that gives the maximum value from the specfied function.
`max_by`/`min_by` are convenient when you want to get the value which has greatest/smallest scores.

We discussed the name chain_map, but I decided to go with flat_map_ for consistency with vec.

I imagine though that this will bounce in bors once or twice... Because attributes can't be cfg(stage0)'d off, there's temporarily a lot of new stage0/stage1+ code.
This adds a `#[no_drop_flag]` attribute. This attribute tells the compiler to omit the drop flag from the struct, if it has a destructor. When the destructor is run, instead of setting the drop flag, it instead zeroes-out the struct. This means the destructor can run multiple times and therefore it is up to the developer to use it safely.
The primary usage case for this is smart-pointer types like `Rc<T>` as the extra flag caused the struct to be 1 word larger because of alignment.
This closes#7271 and #7138

written in an ancient dialect of Rust so I've just removed it
this also removes `to_vec` from DList because it's provided by

This commit adds filtered method for Option type. It is not exactly necessary (chain method can be used instead), however I believe that this approach using extra filtered method is more convinient.
To achieve this, the following changes were made:
* Move TyDesc, TyVisitor and Opaque to std::unstable::intrinsics
* Convert TyDesc, TyVisitor and Opaque to lang items instead of specially
handling the intrinsics module
* Removed TypeDesc, FreeGlue and get_type_desc() from sys

This fixes part of #3730, but not all.
Also changes the TyDesc struct to be equivalent with the generated
code, with the hope that the above issue may one day be closed for good,
i.e. that the TyDesc type can completely be specified in the Rust
sources and not be generated.
The Listener trait takes two type parameters, the type of connection and the type of Acceptor,
and specifies only one method, listen, which consumes the listener and produces an Acceptor.
The Acceptor trait takes one type parameter, the type of connection, and defines two methods.
The accept() method waits for an incoming connection attempt and returns the result.
The incoming() method creates an iterator over incoming connections and is a default method.

I removed the `static-method-test.rs` test because it was heavily based
on `BaseIter` and there are plenty of other more complex uses of static
methods anyway.
This makes the handling of atomic operations more generic, which
does impose a specific naming convention for the intrinsics, but
that seems ok with me, rather than having an individual case for
each name.
It also adds the intrinsics to the the intrinsics file.
The removed test for issue #2611 is well covered by the `std::iterator`
module itself.
This adds the `count` method to `IteratorUtil` to replace `EqIter`.

Under valgrind on 64->32 cross compiles the dynamic linker is emitting
some error messages on stderr, which interferes with the tests that
are checking stderr.
Was updating some code of mine to use the new `std`/`extra` library names, and noticed a place where docs for `std::libc` hadn't been updated. Then I updated some top-level docs for the new libraries' names, too.
The code compiles and runs under windows now, but I couldn't look up any
symbol from the current executable (dlopen(NULL)), and calling looked
up external function handles doesn't seem to work correctly under windows.
This the beginning of a fix for #7095.

It can sometimes be useful to have maps/sets of floating point values.
Doing arithmetic with floats and then using them as keys is, of course, not a good idea.
This allows mass-initialization of large structs without having to specify all the fields.
I'm a bit hesitant, but I wanted to get this out there. I don't really like using the `Zero` trait, because it doesn't really make sense for a type like `HashMap` to use `Zero` as the 'blank allocation' trait. In theory there'd be a new trait, but then that's adding cruft to the language which may not necessarily need to be there.
I do think that this can be useful, but I only implemented `Zero` on the basic types where I thought it made sense, so it may not be all that usable yet. (opinions?)
Moves all the remaining functions that could reasonably be methods to be methods, except for some FFI ones (which I believe @erickt is working on, possibly) and `each_split_within`, since I'm not really sure the details of it (I believe @kimundi wrote the current implementation, so maybe he could convert it to an external iterator method on `StrSlice`, e.g. `word_wrap_iter(&self) -> WordWrapIterator<'self>`, where `WordWrapIterator` impls `Iterator<&'self str>`. It probably won't be too hard, since it's already a state machine.)
This also cleans up the comparison impls for the string types, except I'm not sure how the lang items `eq_str` and `eq_str_uniq` need to be handled, so they (`eq_slice` and `eq`) remain stand-alone functions.
This moves them all into the traits submodule, and delegates Ord
to the TotalOrd instance. It also deletes the stand-alone lt, gt,
ge and le functions.
This is caused by StrVector having a generic implementation for &[S]
and so #5898 means that method resolution of ~[~[1]].concat() sees that
both StrVector and VectorVector have methods that (superficially) match.
They are now connect_vec and concat_vec, which means that they can actually be
called.

To measure the performance improvement from replacing the exclusive with an atomic uint, I edited the ```msgsend-ring-rw-arcs``` bench test to do a ```write_downgrade``` instead of just a ```write```, so that it stressed the code paths that accessed ```read_count```. (At first I was still using ```write``` and saw no performance difference whatsoever, whoooops.)
The bench test measures how long it takes to send 1,000,000 messages by using rwarcs to emulate pipes. I also measured the performance difference imposed by the fix to the ```access_lock``` race (which involves taking an extra semaphore in the ```cond.wait()``` path). The net result is that fixing the race imposes a 4% to 5% slowdown, but doing the atomic uint optimization gives a 6% to 8% speedup.
Note that this speedup will be most visible in read- or downgrade-heavy workloads. If an RWARC's only users are writers, the optimization doesn't matter. All the same, I think this more than justifies the extra complexity I mentioned in #7066.

The code compiles and runs under windows now, but I couldn't look up any
symbol from the current executable (dlopen(NULL)), and calling looked
up external function handles doesn't seem to work correctly under windows.

This is supposed to be an efficient way to link the lifetimes
of tasks into a tree. JoinLatches form a tree and when `release`
is called they wait on children then signal the parent.
This structure creates zombie tasks which currently keep the entire
task allocated. Zombie tasks are supposed to be tombstoned but that
code does not work correctly.
This fixes the strange random crashes in compile-fail tests.
