476dfc24b3 std: Use correct lifetime parameter on str::raw::slice_bytes
fn slice_bytes is marked unsafe since it allows violating the valid
string encoding property; but the function did also allow extending the
lifetime of the slice by mistake, since it's returning `&str`.

Use the annotation `slice_bytes<'a>(&'a str, ...) -> &'a str` so
that all uses of slice_bytes are region checked correctly.

a27f339cb4 std::rt: Don't allow schedulers to exit before handling all messages
Every time run_sched_once performs a 'scheduling action' it needs to guarantee
that it runs at least one more time, so enqueue another run_sched_once callback.
The primary reason it needs to do this is because not all async callbacks
are guaranteed to run, it's only guaranteed that *a* callback will run after
enqueing one - some may get dropped.

At the moment this means we wastefully create lots of callbacks to ensure that
there will *definitely* be a callback queued up to continue running the scheduler.
The logic really needs to be tightened up here.

f7c4359a2c auto merge of #8237 : blake2-ppc/rust/faster-utf8, r=brson
Use unchecked vec indexing since the vector bounds are checked by the
loop. Iterators are not easy to use in this case since we skip 1-4 bytes
each lap. This part of the commit speeds up is_utf8 for ASCII input.

Check codepoint ranges by checking the byte ranges manually instead of
computing a full decoding for multibyte encodings. This is easy to read
and corresponds to the UTF-8 syntax in the RFC.

No changes to what we accept. A comment notes that surrogate halves are
accepted.

Before:

	test str::bench::is_utf8_100_ascii ... bench: 165 ns/iter (+/- 3)
	test str::bench::is_utf8_100_multibyte ... bench: 218 ns/iter (+/- 5)

After:

	test str::bench::is_utf8_100_multibyte ... bench: 156 ns/iter (+/- 3)

8407ec9fed syntax: make #[deriving(TotalOrd)] lazy.
Previously it would call:

  f(sf1.cmp(&of1), f(sf2.cmp(&of2), ...))

(where s/of1 = 'self/other field 1', and f was
std::cmp::lexical_ordering)

This meant that every .cmp subcall got evaluated when calling a derived
TotalOrd.cmp.

This corrects this to use

   let test = sf1.cmp(&of1);
   if test == Equal {
      let test = sf2.cmp(&of2);
      if test == Equal {
        // ...
      } else {
        test
      }
   } else {
     test
   }

This gives a lexical ordering by short-circuiting on the first comparison
that is not Equal.

39fafd655a auto merge of #8204 : kballard/rust/str-into-owned, r=graydon
The method .into_owned() is meant to be used as an optimization when you
need to get a ~str from a Str, but don't want to unnecessarily copy it
if it's already a ~str.

This is meant to ease functions that look like

  fn foo<S: Str>(strs: &[S])

Previously they could work with the strings as slices using .as_slice(),
but producing ~str required copying the string, even if the vector
turned out be a &[~str] already.

I don't have any concrete uses for this yet, since the one conversion I've done to `&[S]` so far (see PR #8203) didn't actually need owned strings. But having this here may make using `Str` more attractive.

It also may be worth adding an `into_managed()` function, but that one is less obviously useful than `into_owned()`.

2001cc043b Bump fd limit on macos when running rt tests
OS X defaults the ulimit for open files to 256 for programs launched
from the Terminal (GUI apps get a higher default). Unfortunately this is
too low for the rt tests, which deliberately overcommit and create a lot
of threads (which means a lot of schedulers, and each scheduler needs at
least 2 fds).

By calling sysctl() and setrlimit() we can bump the fd limit up to the
maximum allowed (on stock OS X it's 10240).

Fixes #7772.

f7eed22387 A major refactoring that changes the way the runtime uses TLS. In the
old design the TLS held the scheduler struct, and the scheduler struct
held the active task. This posed all sorts of weird problems due to
how we wanted to use the contents of TLS. The cleaner approach is to
leave the active task in TLS and have the task hold the scheduler. To
make this work out the scheduler has to run inside a regular task, and
then once that is the case the context switching code is massively
simplified, as instead of three possible paths there is only one. The
logical flow is also easier to follow, as the scheduler struct acts
somewhat like a "token" indicating what is active.

These changes also necessitated changing a large number of runtime
tests, and rewriting most of the runtime testing helpers.

Polish level is "low", as I will very soon start on more scheduler
changes that will require wiping the polish off. That being said there
should be sufficient comments around anything complex to make this
entirely respectable as a standalone commit.

looping protocol (no break on return false).

The code in gc.rs does not use loop breaks, nor does any code using it.

We remove the capacity to break from the loops in std::gc and implement
the walks using `do { .. }` expressions.

No behavior change.

e5a64f2add std: Remove the internal iterator methods from trait Set
.intersection(), .union() etc methods in trait std::container::Set use
internal iters. Remove these methods from the trait.

I reported issue #8154 for the reinstatement of iterator-based set algebra
methods to the Set trait.

For bitv and treemap, that lack Iterator implementations of set
operations, preserve them as methods directly on the types themselves.

For HashSet, these methods are replaced by the present .union_iter()
etc.

This removes a bunch of options from the task builder interface that are irrelevant to the new scheduler and were generally unused anyway. It also bumps the stack size of new scheduler tasks so that there's enough room to run rustc and changes the interface to `Thread` to not implicitly join threads on destruction, but instead require an explicit, and mandatory, call to `join`.

There is one weird FIXME I left open here, in the "implement select" commit -- an assertion I couldn't get to work in the receive path, on an invariant that for some reason doesn't hold with ```SharedPort```. Still investigating this.

b4ff95599a std: Deny overlong encodings in UTF-8
An 'overlong encoding' is a codepoint encoded non-minimally using the
utf-8 format. Denying these enforce each codepoint to have only one
valid representation in utf-8.

An example is byte sequence 0xE0 0x80 0x80 which could be interpreted as
U+0, but it's an overlong encoding since the canonical form is just
0x00.

Another example is 0xE0 0x80 0xAF which was previously accepted and is
an overlong encoding of the solidus "/". Directory traversal characters
like / and . form the most compelling argument for why this commit is
security critical.

Factor out common UTF-8 decoding expressions as macros. This commit will
partly duplicate UTF-8 decoding, so it is now present in both
fn is_utf8() and .char_range_at(); the latter using an assumption of
a valid str.

4989799799 auto merge of #7986 : alexcrichton/rust/raw-repr, r=brson
This moves the raw struct layout of closures, vectors, boxes, and strings into a
new `unstable::raw` module. This is meant to be a centralized location to find
information for the layout of these values.

As safe method, `unwrap`, is provided to convert a rust value to its raw
representation. Unsafe methods to convert back are not provided because they are
rarely used and too numerous to write an implementation for each (not much of a
common pattern).

This is progress on #6790. I tried to get a nice interface for a trait to implement in the raw module, but I was unable to come up with one. The hard part is that there are so many different directions to go from one way to another that it's difficult to find a pattern to follow to implement a trait with. Someone else might have some better luck though.

This removes all the code from libextra that depends on libuv. After that it removes three runtime features that existed to support the global uv loop: weak tasks, runtime-global variables, and at_exit handlers.

The networking code doesn't have many users besides servo, so shouldn't have much fallout. The timer code though is useful and will probably break out-of-tree code until the new scheduler lands, but I expect that to be soon.

It also incidentally moves `os::change_dir_locked` to `std::unstable`. This is a function used by test cases to avoid cwd races and in my opinion shouldn't be public (#7870).

Some notes about the commits.

Exit code propagation commits:
* ```Reimplement unwrap()``` has the same old code from ```arc::unwrap``` ported to use modern atomic types and finally (it's considerably nicer this way)
* ```Add try_unwrap()``` has some new slightly-tricky (but pretty simple) concurrency primitive code
* ```Add KillHandle``` and ```Add kill::Death``` are the bulk of the logic.

Task killing commits:
* ```Implement KillHandle::kill() and friends```, ```Do a task-killed check```, and ```Add BlockedTask``` implement the killing logic;
* ```Change the HOF context switchers``` turns said logic on

Linked failure commits:
* ```Replace *rust_task ptrs``` adapts the taskgroup code to work for both runtimes
* ```Enable taskgroup code``` does what it says on the tin.

r? @brson `rustpkg build`, if executed in a package source directory inside
a workspace, will now build that package. By "inside a workspace"
I mean that the parent directory has to be called `src`, and rustpkg
will create a `build` directory in .. if there isn't already one.

Same goes for `rustpkg install` and `rustpkg clean`.

For the time being, `rustpkg build` (etc.) will still error out if
you run it inside a directory whose parent isn't called `src`.
I'm not sure whether or not it's desirable to have it do something
in a non-workspace directory.

e39ea2a5c8 rustpkg: Make rustpkg commands work without a package ID
`rustpkg build`, if executed in a package source directory inside
a workspace, will now build that package.

53e934c2ab auto merge of #7684 : pnkfelix/rust/fsk-invert-range-rev-halfclosedness-issue5270-2ndpr, r=cmr
Changes int/uint range_rev to iterate over range `(hi,lo]` instead of `[hi,lo)`.

Fix #5270.

Also:
* Adds unit tests for int/uint range functions
* Updates the uses of `range_rev` to account for the new semantics. (Note that pretty much all of the updates there were strict improvements to the code in question; yay!)
* Exposes new function, `range_step_inclusive`, which does the range `[hi,lo]`, (at least when `hi-lo` is a multiple of the `step` parameter).
* Special-cases when `|step| == 1` removing unnecessary bounds-check. (I did not check whether LLVM was already performing this optimization; I figure it would be a net win to not leave that analysis to the compiler. If reviewer objects, I can easily remove that from the refactored code.)

(This pull request is a rebased version of PR #7524, which went stale due to recent unrelated changes to num libraries.)

cc #6004 and #3273

This is a rewrite of TLS to get towards not requiring `@` when using task local storage. Most of the rewrite is straightforward, although there are two caveats:

1. Changing `local_set` to not require `@` is blocked on #7673
2. The code in `local_pop` is some of the most unsafe code I've written. A second set of eyes should definitely scrutinize it...

The public-facing interface currently hasn't changed, although it will have to change because `local_data::get` cannot return `Option<T>`, nor can it return `Option<&T>` (the lifetime isn't known). This will have to be changed to be given a closure which yield `&T` (or as an Option). I didn't do this part of the api rewrite in this pull request as I figured that it could wait until when `@` is fully removed.

This also doesn't deal with the issue of using something other than functions as keys, but I'm looking into using static slices (as mentioned in the issues).

Sorry this is so huge, but it's been accumulating for about a month. There's lots of stuff here, mostly oriented toward enabling multithreaded scheduling and improving compatibility between the old and new runtimes. Adds task pinning so that we can create the 'platform thread' in servo.

[Here](e1555f9b56/src/libstd/rt/mod.rs (L201)) is the current runtime setup code.

About half of this has already been reviewed.

The free-standing functions in f32, f64, i8, i16, i32, i64, u8, u16,
u32, u64, float, int, and uint are replaced with generic functions in
num instead.

This means that instead of having to know everywhere what the type is, like

~~~
f64::sin(x)
~~~

You can simply write code that uses the type-generic versions in num instead, this works for all types that implement the corresponding trait in num.

~~~
num::sin(x)
~~~

Note 1: If you were previously using any of those functions, just replace them
with the corresponding function with the same name in num.

Note 2: If you were using a function that corresponds to an operator, use the
operator instead.

ba13482dfa update ptr intrinsics and rewrite vec routines to be more correct.
In particular, it is not valid to go around passing uninitialized or zero'd
memory as arguments. Rust should generally be free to assume that the arguments
it gets are valid input values, but the output of intrinsics::uninit() and
intrinsics::init() are not (e.g., an @T is just null, leading to an error
if we should try to increment the ref count).

They simply byte-swap an integer to a specific endian, like the hton* functions in C.

These intrinsics are synthesized, so maybe they should be in another file. But since they are just a single line of code each, based on the bswap intrinsics and aren't really intended for public consumption I thought they would fit in the intrinsics file.

The next step working on this could be to expose a trait / generic function for byteswapping.

040ac2a932 auto merge of #7495 : thestinger/rust/exchange, r=cmr
With these changes, exchange allocator headers are never initialized, read or written to. Removing the header will now just involve updating the code in trans using an offset to only do it if the type contained is managed.

The only thing blocking removing the initialization of the last field in the header was ~fn since it uses it to store the dynamic size/types due to captures. I temporarily switched it to a `closure_exchange_alloc` lang item (it uses the same `exchange_free`) and #7496 is filed about removing that.

Since the `exchange_free` call is now inlined all over the codebase, I don't think we should have an assert for null. It doesn't currently ever happen, but it would be fine if we started generating code that did do it. The `exchange_free` function also had a comment declaring that it must not fail, but a regular assert would cause a failure. I also removed the atomic counter because valgrind can already find these leaks, and we have valgrind bots now.

Note that exchange free does not currently print an error an out-of-memory when it aborts, because our `io` code may allocate. We could probably get away with a `#[rust_stack]` call to a `stdio` function but it would be better to make a write system call.
