ae2a5ecbf6 handle zero-size allocations correctly
The `malloc` family of functions may return a null pointer for a
zero-size allocation, which should not be interpreted as an
out-of-memory error.

If the implementation does not return a null pointer, then handling
this will result in memory savings for zero-size types.

This also switches some code to `malloc_raw` in order to maintain a
centralized point for handling out-of-memory in `rt::global_heap`.

0148055a56 std::trie: use unsafe code to give a 3x speed up to the iterator.
This stores the stack of iterators inline (we have a maximum depth with
`uint` keys), and then uses direct pointer offsetting to manipulate it,
in a blazing fast way:

Before:

    bench_iter_large          ... bench:     43187 ns/iter (+/- 3082)
    bench_iter_small          ... bench:       618 ns/iter (+/- 288)

After:

    bench_iter_large          ... bench:     13497 ns/iter (+/- 1575)
    bench_iter_small          ... bench:       220 ns/iter (+/- 91)

f0c554d0d8 std::trie: remove each_{key,value}_reverse internal iterators.

472dfe74b3 Simplify std::num::Primitive trait definition
This removes the `Primitive::{bits, bytes, is_signed}` methods and removes the operator trait constraints, for the reasons outlined below:

- The `Primitive::{bits, bytes}` associated functions were originally added to reflect the existing `BITS` and `BYTES` statics included in the numeric modules. These statics are only exist as a workaround for Rust's lack of CTFE, and should probably be deprecated in the future in favor of using the `std::mem::size_of` function (see #11621).

- `Primitive::is_signed` seems to be of little utility and does not seem to be used anywhere in the Rust compiler or libraries. It is also rather ugly to call due to the `Option<Self>` workaround for #8888.

- The operator trait constraints are already covered by the `Num` trait.

- Refactors Datum to better define cleanup roles.
- Refactor cleanup scopes to not be tied to basic blocks, permitting
  us to have a very large number of scopes (one per AST node).
- Introduce nascent documentation in trans/doc.rs covering datums and
  cleanup in a more comprehensive way.

ed7e576d9c Add a generic power function
The patch adds a `pow` function for types implementing `One`, `Mul` and
`Clone` trait.

The patch also renames f32 and f64 pow into powf in order to still have
a way to easily have float powers. It uses llvms intrinsics.

The pow implementation for all num types uses the exponentiation by
square.

The failure functions are generic, meaning they're candidates for getting
inlined across crates. This has been happening, leading to monstrosities like
that found in #11549. I have verified that the codegen is *much* better now that

Unique pointers and vectors currently contain a reference counting
header when containing a managed pointer.

This `{ ref_count, type_desc, prev, next }` header is not necessary and
not a sensible foundation for tracing. It adds needless complexity to
library code and is responsible for breakage in places where the branch
 has been left out.

The `borrow_offset` field can now be removed from `TyDesc` along with
the associated handling in the compiler.

This reduces the number of moves/memcpy's we do, which makes insert
faster, especially in cases of keys with long equal prefixes (the
_low_bits tests):

f40d5b1050 add an experimental tag for Gc<T> due to cycles
This type isn't yet very useful since it only pretends cycles won't be
a problem. Anyone using it should be made aware that they're going to
leak.

5902263d0a Fix the representation of C void pointers in LLVM IR
Currently, we have c_void defined to be represented as an empty struct,
but LLVM expects C's void* to be represented as i8*. That means we
currently generate code in which LLVM doesn't recognize malloc() and
free() and can't apply certain optimization that would remove calls to
those functions.

0b3311c260 std::io: Optimize u64_from_be_bytes()
Instead of reading a byte at a time in a loop we copy the relevant bytes into
a temporary vector of size eight. We can then read the value from the temporary
vector using a single u64 read. LLVM seems to be able to optimize this
almost scarily good.

This will allow capturing of common things like logging messages, stdout prints
(using stdio println), and failure messages (printed to stderr).  Any new prints
added to libstd should be funneled through these task handles to allow capture
as well.

Additionally, this commit redirects logging back through a `Logger` trait so the
log level can be usefully consumed by an arbitrary logger.

This commit also introduces methods to set the task-local stdout handles:

* std::io::stdio::set_stdout
* std::io::stdio::set_stderr
* std::io::logging::set_logger

These methods all return the previous logger just in case it needs to be used
for inspection.

I plan on using this infrastructure for extra::test soon, but we don't quite
have the primitives that I'd like to use for it, so it doesn't migrate
extra::test at this time.

03e91573c7 Don't read forever on a file descriptor
Similarly to the recent commit to do this for networking, there's no reason that
a read on a file descriptor should continue reading until the entire buffer is
full. This makes sense when dealing with literal files, but when dealing with
things like stdin this doesn't make sense.

(using stdio println), and failure messages (printed to stderr).  Any new prints
added to libstd should be funneled through these task handles to allow capture
as well.

log level can be usefully consumed by an arbitrary logger.

This commit also introduces methods to set the task-local stdout handles:

I plan on using this infrastructure for extra::test soon, but we don't quite
have the primitives that I'd like to use for it, so it doesn't migrate
extra::test at this time.

This removes the feature where newtype structs can be dereferenced like pointers, and likewise where certain enums can be dereferenced (which I imagine nobody realized still existed). This ad-hoc behavior is to be replaced by a more general overloadable dereference trait in the future.

I've been nursing this patch for two months and think it's about rebased up to master.

@nikomatsakis this makes a bunch of your type checking code noticeably uglier.

After writing some benchmarks for ebml::reader::vuint_at() I noticed that LLVM doesn't seem to inline the from_be32 function even though it only does a call to the bswap32 intrinsic in the x86_64 case. Marking the functions with #[inline(always)] fixes that and seems to me a reasonable thing to do. I got the following measurements in my vuint_at() benchmarks:

This patchset adds intrinsics similar to the to_[be|le][16|32|64] intrinsics but for going in the reverse direction, e.g. from big/little endian to host endian. Implementation wise they do exactly the same as the corresponding to_* functions but I think it anyway make sense to have them since using the to_* functions in the reverse direction is not entirely intuitive.

The first patch adds the intrinsics and the two following changes instances of bswap* to use the [to|from]_* intrinsics instead.

0daaeab244 Conservatively export all trait methods and impls
The comments have more information as to why this is done, but the basic idea is
that finding an exported trait is actually a fairly difficult problem. The true
answer lies in whether a trait is ever referenced from another exported method,
and right now this kind of analysis doesn't exist, so the conservative answer of
"yes" is always returned to answer whether a trait is exported.

f3370295b7 Implement a Once primitive for initialization
Of the 8 static mutexes that are currently in-use by the compiler and its
libraries, 4 of them are currently used for one-time initialization. The
unforunate side effect of using a static mutex is that the mutex is leaked.

This primitive should provide the basis for efficiently keeping track of
one-time initialization as well as ensuring that it does not leak the internal
mutex that is used.

I have chosen to put this in libstd because libstd is currently making use of a
static initialization mutex (rt::local_ptr), but I can also see a more refined
version of this type being suitable to initialize FFI bindings (such as
initializing LLVM and initializing winsock networking on windows). I also intend
on adding "helper threads" to libnative, and those will greatly benefit from a
simple "once" primitive rather than always reinventing the wheel by using
mutexes and bools.

I would much rather see this primitive built on a mutex that blocks green
threads appropriately, but that does not exist at this time, so it does not
belong outside of `std::unstable`.

This patch changes `result::collect` (and adds a new `option::collect`) from creating a `~[T]` to take an `Iterator`. This makes the function much more flexible, and may replace the need for #10989.

This patch is a little more complicated than it needs to be because of #11084. Once that is fixed we can replace the `CollectIterator` with a `Scan` iterator.

It also fixes a test warning.

7f48345904 std: Remove must deferred sending functions
These functions are all unnecessary now, and they only have meaning in the M:N
context. Removing these functions uncovered a bug in the librustuv timer
bindings, but it was fairly easy to cover (and the test is already committed).

These cannot be completely removed just yet due to their usage in the WaitQueue
of extra::sync, and until the mutex in libextra is rewritten it will not be
possible to remove the deferred sends for channels.

962af9198f native: Protect against spurious wakeups on cvars
This is a very real problem with cvars on normal systems, and all of channels
will not work if spurious wakeups are accepted. This problem is just solved with
a synchronized flag (accessed in the cvar's lock) to see whether a signal()
actually happened or whether it's spurious.

shut down after spawning the main task (because the global task count would
still be 0). This fixes the logic by blocking the sched pool task in receving on
a port instead of spawning a task into the pool to receive on a port.

The modifications necessary were to have a "simple task" running by the time the
code is executing, but this is a simple enough thing to implement and I forsee
this being necessary to have implemented in the future anyway.

of the old runtime. This functionality no longer exists and is thoroughly tested
inside of libgreen and libnative. There isn't really the notion of "starting the

3893716390 Finalize the green::Pool type
The scheduler pool now has a much more simplified interface. There is now a
clear distinction between creating the pool and then interacting the pool. When
a pool is created, all schedulers are not active, and only later if a spawn is
done does activity occur.

There are four operations that you can do on a pool:

1. Create a new pool. The only argument to this function is the configuration
   for the scheduler pool. Currently the only configuration parameter is the
   number of threads to initially spawn.

2. Spawn a task into this pool. This takes a procedure and task configuration
   options and spawns a new task into the pool of schedulers.

3. Spawn a new scheduler into the pool. This will return a handle on which to
   communicate with the scheduler in order to do something like a pinned task.

4. Shut down the scheduler pool. This will consume the scheduler pool, request
   all of the schedulers to shut down, and then wait on all the scheduler
   threads. Currently this will block the invoking OS thread, but I plan on
   making 'Thread::join' not a thread-blocking call.

These operations can be used to encode all current usage of M:N schedulers, as
well as providing a simple interface through which a pool can be modified. There
is currently no way to remove a scheduler from a pool of scheduler, as there's
no way to guarantee that a scheduler has exited. This may be added in the
future, however (as necessary).

All tests except for the homing tests are now working again with the
librustuv/libgreen refactoring. The homing-related tests are currently commented
out and now placed in the rustuv::homing module.

I plan on refactoring scheduler pool spawning in order to enable more homing
tests in a future commit.

51abdee5f1 green: Rip the bandaid off, introduce libgreen
This extracts everything related to green scheduling from libstd and introduces
a new libgreen crate. This mostly involves deleting most of std::rt and moving
it to libgreen.

Along with the movement of code, this commit rearchitects many functions in the
scheduler in order to adapt to the fact that Local::take now *only* works on a
Task, not a scheduler. This mostly just involved threading the current green
task through in a few locations, but there were one or two spots where things
got hairy.

There are a few repercussions of this commit:

* tube/rc have been removed (the runtime implementation of rc)
* There is no longer a "single threaded" spawning mode for tasks. This is now
  encompassed by 1:1 scheduling + communication. Convenience methods have been
  introduced that are specific to libgreen to assist in the spawning of pools of
  schedulers.

6aadc9d188 native: Introduce libnative
This commit introduces a new crate called "native" which will be the crate that
implements the 1:1 runtime of rust. This currently entails having an
implementation of std::rt::Runtime inside of libnative as well as moving all of
the native I/O implementations to libnative.

The current snag is that the start lang item must currently be defined in
libnative in order to start running, but this will change in the future.

Cool fact about this crate, there are no extra features that are enabled.

Note that this commit does not include any makefile support necessary for
building libnative, that's all coming in a later commit.

76270816d5 std: Make logging safely implemented
This commit fixes the logging function to be safely implemented, as well as
forcibly requiring a task to be present to use logging macros. This is safely
implemented by transferring ownership of the logger from the task to the local
stack frame in order to perform the print. This means that if a logger does more
logging while logging a new one will be initialized and then will get
overwritten once the initial logging function returns.

Without a scheme such as this, it is possible to unsafely alias two loggers by
logging twice (unsafely borrows from the task twice).

dd19785f96 std: Handle prints with literally no context
Printing is an incredibly useful debugging utility, and it's not much help if
your debugging prints just trigger an obscure abort when you need them most. In
order to handle this case, forcibly fall back to a libc::write implementation of
printing whenever a local task is not available.

Note that this is *not* a 1:1 fallback. All 1:1 rust tasks will still have a
local Task that it can go through (and stdio will be created through the local
IO factory), this is only a fallback for "no context" rust code (such as that
setting up the context).

of the LocalIo borrow, so this commit exposes this limitation by returning

to encapsulate the functionality of raising on io_error if there is on local I/O
available.

very small runs.

This uses a lot of unsafe code for speed, otherwise we would be having

Expanded, that is:

- `AsOption`
- `IntoOption`

These were defined for each other but never *used* anywhere. They are
all trivial and so removal will have negligible effect upon anyone.
`Either` has fallen out of favour (and its implementation of these
traits of dubious semantics), `Option<T>` → `Result<T, ()>` was never
really useful and `Result<T, E>` → `Option<T>` should now be done with
`Result.ok()` (mirrored with `Result.err()` for even more usefulness).

In summary, there's really no point in any of these remaining.

### Rename To{Str,Bytes}Consume traits to Into*.

That is:

- `ToStrConsume` → `IntoStr`;
- `ToBytesConsume` → `IntoBytes`.

I have acquired the following measurements on this patch. I compared against Go, but remember that Go's channels are fundamentally different than ours in that sends are by-default blocking. This means that it's not really a totally fair comparison, but it's good to see ballpark numbers for anyway

The rows are as follows:

* `std` - the current libstd implementation (before this pull request)
* `my` - this pull request's implementation (in M:N mode)
* `native` - this pull request's implementation (in 1:1 mode)
* `goN` - go's implementation with GOMAXPROCS=N. The only relevant value is 8 (I had 8 cores on this machine)
* `goN-X` - go's implementation where the channels in question were created with buffers of size `X` to behave more similarly to rust's channels.

529f915728 Remove {As,Into,To}{Option,Either,Result} traits.
Expanded, that is:

- `AsOption`
- `IntoOption`
- `ToOption`
- `AsEither`
- `IntoEither`
- `ToEither`
- `AsResult`
- `IntoResult`
- `ToResult`

These were defined for each other but never *used* anywhere. They are
all trivial and so removal will have negligible effect upon anyone.
`Either` has fallen out of favour (and its implementation of these
traits of dubious semantics), `Option<T>` → `Result<T, ()>` was never
really useful and `Result<T, E>` → `Option<T>` should now be done with
`Result.ok()` (mirrored with `Result.err()` for even more usefulness).

In summary, there's really no point in any of these remaining.

5a93d12e01 std::io: Add Buffer.lines(), change .bytes() api
-   `Buffer.lines()` returns `LineIterator` which yields line using
    `.read_line()`.
-   `Reader.bytes()` now takes `&mut self` instead of `self`.

b349036e5f Make crate hash stable and externally computable.
This replaces the link meta attributes with a pkgid attribute and uses a hash
of this as the crate hash. This makes the crate hash computable by things
other than the Rust compiler. It also switches the hash function ot SHA1 since
that is much more likely to be available in shell, Python, etc than SipHash.

Fixes #10188, #8523.

e91ffb0710 Link rustllvm statically, and distribute a static snapshot
In order to keep up to date with changes to the libraries that `llvm-config`
spits out, the dependencies to the LLVM are a dynamically generated rust file.
This file is now automatically updated whenever LLVM is updated to get kept
up-to-date.

At the same time, this cleans out some old cruft which isn't necessary in the
makefiles in terms of dependencies.

This registers new snapshots after the landing of #10528, and then goes on to tweak the build process to build a monolithic `rustc` binary for use in future snapshots. This mainly involved dropping the dynamic dependency on `librustllvm`, so that's now built as a static library (with a dynamically generated rust file listing LLVM dependencies).

This currently doesn't actually make the snapshot any smaller (24MB => 23MB), but I noticed that the executable has 11MB of metadata so once progress is made on #10740 we should have a much smaller snapshot.

There's not really a super-compelling reason to distribute just a binary because we have all the infrastructure for dealing with a directory structure, but to me it seems "more correct" that a snapshot compiler is just a `rustc` binary.

mut_chunks() returns an iterator that produces mutable slices. This is the mutable version of the existing chunks() method on the ImmutableVector trait.

EDIT: This uses only safe code now.

PREVIOUSLY:
I tried to get this working with safe code only, but I couldn't figure out how to make that work. Before #8624, the exact same code worked without the need for the transmute() call. With that fix and without the transmute() call, the compiler complains about the call to mut_slice(). I think the issue is that the mutable slice that is returned will live longer than the self parameter since the self parameter doesn't have an explicit lifetime. However, that is the way that the Iterator trait defines the next() method. I'm sure there is a good reason for that, although I don't quite understand why. Anyway, I think the interface is safe, since the MutChunkIter will only hand out non-overlapping pointers and there is no way to get it to hand out the same pointer twice.

In this series of commits, I've implemented static linking for rust. The scheme I implemented was the same as my [mailing list post](https://mail.mozilla.org/pipermail/rust-dev/2013-November/006686.html).

The commits have more details to the nitty gritty of what went on. I've rebased this on top of my native mutex pull request (#10479), but I imagine that it will land before this lands, I just wanted to pre-emptively get all the rebase conflicts out of the way (becuase this is reorganizing building librustrt as well).

Some contentious points I want to make sure are all good:

* I've added more "compiler chooses a default" behavior than I would like, I want to make sure that this is all very clearly outlined in the code, and if not I would like to remove behavior or make it clearer.
* I want to make sure that the new "fancy suite" tests are ok (using make/python instead of another rust crate)

If we do indeed pursue this, I would be more than willing to write up a document describing how linking in rust works. I believe that this behavior should be very understandable, and the compiler should never hinder someone just because linking is a little fuzzy.

9fbba7b2ee Statically link librustrt to libstd
This commit alters the build process of the compiler to build a static
librustrt.a instead of a dynamic version. This means that we can stop
distributing librustrt as well as default linking against it in the compiler.

This also means that if you attempt to build rust code without libstd, it will
no longer work if there are any landing pads in play. The reason for this is
that LLVM and rustc will emit calls to the various upcalls in librustrt used to
manage exception handling. In theory we could split librustrt into librustrt and
librustupcall. We would then distribute librustupcall and link to it for all
programs using landing pads, but I would rather see just one librustrt artifact
and simplify the build process.

The major benefit of doing this is that building a static rust library for use
in embedded situations all of a sudden just became a whole lot more feasible.

e338a4154b Add generation of static libraries to rustc
This commit implements the support necessary for generating both intermediate
and result static rust libraries. This is an implementation of my thoughts in
https://mail.mozilla.org/pipermail/rust-dev/2013-November/006686.html.

When compiling a library, we still retain the "lib" option, although now there
are "rlib", "staticlib", and "dylib" as options for crate_type (and these are
stackable). The idea of "lib" is to generate the "compiler default" instead of
having too choose (although all are interchangeable). For now I have left the
"complier default" to be a dynamic library for size reasons.

Of the rust libraries, lib{std,extra,rustuv} will bootstrap with an
rlib/dylib pair, but lib{rustc,syntax,rustdoc,rustpkg} will only be built as a
dynamic object. I chose this for size reasons, but also because you're probably
not going to be embedding the rustc compiler anywhere any time soon.

Other than the options outlined above, there are a few defaults/preferences that
are now opinionated in the compiler:

* If both a .dylib and .rlib are found for a rust library, the compiler will
  prefer the .rlib variant. This is overridable via the -Z prefer-dynamic option
* If generating a "lib", the compiler will generate a dynamic library. This is
  overridable by explicitly saying what flavor you'd like (rlib, staticlib,

With this change, you can successfully build a rust program with 0 dynamic
dependencies on rust libraries. There is still a dynamic dependency on
librustrt, but I plan on removing that in a subsequent commit.

This change includes no tests just yet. Our current testing
infrastructure/harnesses aren't very amenable to doing flavorful things with
linking, so I'm planning on adding a new mode of testing which I believe belongs
as a separate commit.

a70f9d7324 Implement a lock-free work-stealing deque
This adds an implementation of the Chase-Lev work-stealing deque to libstd
under std::rt::deque. I've been unable to break the implementation of the deque
itself, and it's not super highly optimized just yet (everything uses a SeqCst
memory ordering).

The major snag in implementing the chase-lev deque is that the buffers used to
store data internally cannot get deallocated back to the OS. In the meantime, a
shared buffer pool (synchronized by a normal mutex) is used to
deallocate/allocate buffers from. This is done in hope of not overcommitting too
much memory. It is in theory possible to eventually free the buffers, but one
must be very careful in doing so.

I was unable to get some good numbers from src/test/bench tests (I don't think
many of them are slamming the work queue that much), but I was able to get some
good numbers from one of my own tests. In a recent rewrite of select::select(),
I found that my implementation was incredibly slow due to contention on the
shared work queue. Upon switching to the parallel deque, I saw the contention
drop to 0 and the runtime go from 1.6s to 0.9s with the most amount of time
spent in libuv awakening the schedulers (plus allocations).

I've noticed I use this pattern quite a bit:

The `RecvIterator`, returned from a default `recv_iter` method on the `GenericPort` trait, allows you to reduce this down to:

    for x in port.recv_iter() {
        ...
    }
}
~~~

As demonstrated in the tests, you can also access the port from within the `for` block for further `recv`ing and `peek`ing with no borrow errors, which is quite nice.

ed86b48cc9 Clean up statically initialized data on shutdown
Whenever the runtime is shut down, add a few hooks to clean up some of the
statically initialized data of the runtime. Note that this is an unsafe
operation because there's no guarantee on behalf of the runtime that there's no
other code running which is using the runtime.

This helps turn down the noise a bit in the valgrind output related to
statically initialized mutexes. It doesn't turn the noise down to 0 because
there are still statically initialized mutexes in dynamic_lib and
os::with_env_lock, but I believe that it would be easy enough to add exceptions
for those cases and I don't think that it's the runtime's job to go and clean up
that data.
