a0cfda53c4 Change DST syntax: type -> Sized?
closes #13367

[breaking-change] Use `Sized?` to indicate a dynamically sized type parameter or trait (used to be `type`). E.g.,

```
trait Tr for Sized? {}

fn foo<Sized? X: Share>(x: X) {}
```

41ed455db8 rustc: Repurpose the --crate-name CLI flag
In a cargo-driven world the primary location for the name of a crate will be in
its manifest, not in the source file itself. The purpose of this flag is to
reduce required duplication for new cargo projects.

This is a breaking change because the existing --crate-name flag actually
printed the crate name. This flag was renamed to --print-crate-name, and to
maintain consistence, the --crate-file-name flag was renamed to
--print-file-name.

To maintain backwards compatibility, the --crate-file-name flag is still
recognized, but it is deprecated.

cc3c8bbfaf rustc: Add a flag for specifying dependencies
This comit implements a new flag, --extern, which is used to specify where a
crate is located. The purpose of this flag is to bypass the normal crate
loading/matching of the compiler to point it directly at the right file.

This flag takes the form `--extern foo=bar` where `foo` is the name of a crate
and `bar` is the location at which to find the crate. Multiple `--extern`
directives are allowed with the same crate name to specify the rlib/dylib pair
for a crate. It is invalid to specify more than one rlib or more than one dylib,
and it's required that the crates are valid rust crates.

I have also added some extensive documentation to metadata::loader about how
crate loading should work.

- cleans up the code (primarily, simplifies `Bitv` and implements `BitvSet` in terms of `Bitv`)
- implements several new traits for `Bitv`
- adds new functionality to `Bitv` and `BitvSet`
- replaces internal iterators with external ones
- updates documentation
- minor bug fixes

This is a significantly souped-up version of PR #15139 and is the result of the discussion there.

So far, type names generated for debuginfo where a bit sketchy. It was not clearly defined when a name should be fully qualified and when not, if region parameters should be shown or not, and other things like that.
This commit makes the debuginfo module responsible for creating type names instead of using `ppaux::ty_to_str()` and brings type names (as they show up in the DWARF information) in line with GCC and Clang:

* The name of the type being described is unqualified. It's path is defined by its position in the namespace hierarchy.
* Type arguments are always fully qualified, no matter if they would actually be in scope at the type definition location.

Care is also taken to make type names consistent across crate boundaries. That is, the code now tries make the type name the same, regardless if the type is in the local crate or reconstructed from metadata. Otherwise LLVM will complain about violating the one-definition-rule when using link-time-optimization.

This commit also removes all source location information from type descriptions because these cannot be reconstructed for types instantiated from metadata. Again, with LTO enabled, this can lead to two versions of the debuginfo type description, one with and one without source location information, which then triggers the LLVM ODR assertion.
Fortunately, source location information about types is rarely used, so this has little impact. Once source location information is preserved in metadata (#1972) it can also be re-enabled for type descriptions.

`RUSTFLAGS=-g make check` no works again for me locally, including the LTO test cases (note that I've taken care of #15156 by reverting the change in LLVM that @luqmana identified as the culprit for that issue).

address Niko's feedback.

It does not address the issue of duplicate type parameter bounds, nor
does it address the issue of implementation-defined methods that contain
*fewer* bounds than the trait, because Niko's review indicates that this
should not be necessary (and indeed I believe it is not). A test has
been added to ensure that this works.

This will break code like:

    trait Foo {
        fn bar<T:Baz>();
    }

    impl Foo for Boo {
        fn bar<T:Baz + Quux>() { ... }
        //             ^~~~ ERROR
    }

This will be rejected because the implementation requires *more* bounds
than the trait. It can be fixed by either adding the missing bound to
the trait:

    trait Foo {
        fn bar<T:Baz + Quux>();
        //             ^~~~
    }

    impl Foo for Boo {
        fn bar<T:Baz + Quux>() { ... }  // OK
    }

Or by removing the bound from the impl:

    trait Foo {
        fn bar<T:Baz>();
    }

    impl Foo for Boo {
        fn bar<T:Baz>() { ... }  // OK
        //       ^ remove Quux
    }

This patch imports the relevant tests from #2687, as well as the test
case in #5886, which is fixed as well by this patch.

78b674152e collections::bitv: change constructors for Bitv and BitvSet
`Bitv::new` has been renamed `Bitv::with_capacity`. The new function
`Bitv::new` now creates a `Bitv` with no elements.

The new function `BitvSet::with_capacity` creates a `BitvSet` with
a specified capacity.

9b3f9d9444 Change exhaustiveness analysis to permit multiple constructors per pattern
Slice patterns are different from the rest in that a single slice pattern
does not have a distinct constructor if it contains a variable-length subslice
pattern. For example, the pattern [a, b, ..tail] can match a slice of length 2, 3, 4
and so on.

As a result, the decision tree for exhaustiveness and redundancy analysis should
explore each of those constructors separately to determine if the pattern could be useful
when specialized for any of them.

poor UTF-8 hygiene. To get a view of `&[u8]` from either
a `String` or `&str` slice, use the `as_bytes()` method.

If the diffstat is any indication this shouldn't have a huge impact but it will have some. Most changes in the `str` and `path` module. A lot of the existing usages were in tests where ascii is expected. There are a number of other legit uses where the characters are known to be ascii.

55cae0a094 Implement RFC#28: Add PartialOrd::partial_cmp
I ended up altering the semantics of Json's PartialOrd implementation.
It used to be the case that Null < Null, but I can't think of any reason
for an ordering other than the default one so I just switched it over to
using the derived implementation.

This also fixes broken `PartialOrd` implementations for `Vec` and
`TreeMap`.

05e3248a79 librustc: Match trait self types exactly.
This can break code that looked like:

    impl Foo for Box<Any> {
        fn f(&self) { ... }
    }

    let x: Box<Any + Send> = ...;
    x.f();

Change such code to:

    impl Foo for Box<Any> {
        fn f(&self) { ... }
    }

    let x: Box<Any> = ...;
    x.f();

That is, upcast before calling methods.

This is a conservative solution to #5781. A more proper treatment (see
the xfail'd `trait-contravariant-self.rs`) would take variance into
account. This change fixes the soundness hole.

Some library changes had to be made to make this work. In particular,
`Box<Any>` is no longer showable, and only `Box<Any+Send>` is showable.
Eventually, this restriction can be lifted; for now, it does not prove
too onerous, because `Any` is only used for propagating the result of
task failure.

This patch also adds a test for the variance inference work in #12828,
which accidentally landed as part of DST.

9a9908405d librustc: Ensure that proc upvars have static lifetime.
Since procs do not have lifetime bounds, we must do this to maintain
safety.

This can break code that incorrectly captured references in procedure
types. Change such code to not do this, perhaps with a trait object
instead.

A better solution would be to add higher-rank lifetime support to procs.
However, this would be a lot of work for a feature we want to remove in
favor of unboxed closures. The corresponding "real fix" is #15067.

It turns out that bindings introduced by 'for' loops were not treated hygienically. The fix for this is to make the 'for' expansion more like a macro; rather than expanding sub-pieces and then assembling them, we need to rewrite the for and then call expand again on the whole thing.

This PR includes a test and the fix.

It also contains a number of other things:
- unit tests for other forms of hygiene (currently ignored)
- a fix for the isaac.rs macro that (it turned out) was relying on capturing
- other miscellaneous cleanup and comments

315f2a7054 librustc: Don't try to perform the magical
vector-reference-to-unsafe-pointer-to-element cast if the type to be
casted to is not fully specified.

This is a conservative change to fix the user-visible symptoms of the
issue. A more flexible treatment would delay cast checks to after
function typechecking.

This can break code that did:

    let x: *u8 = &([0, 0]) as *_;

Change this code to:

    let x: *u8 = &([0, 0]) as *u8;

b18c4cfef0 rustc: Always include the morestack library
It was previously assumed that the object file generated by LLVM would always
require the __morestack function, but that assumption appears to be incorrect,
as outlined in #15108. This commit forcibly tells the linker to include the
entire archive, regardless of whether it's currently necessary or not.

This breaks a fair amount of code. The typical patterns are:

* `[1, 2, 3].len()`: change to `[1i, 2, 3].len()`.

5e720aac42 Add missing attributes to indirect calls for foreign functions
When calling a foreign function, some arguments and/or return value
attributes are required to conform to the foreign ABI. Currently those
attributes are only added to the declaration of foreign functions. With
direct calls, this is no problem, because LLVM can see that those
attributes apply to the call. But with an indirect call, LLVM cannot do
that and the attribute is missing.

To fix that, we have to add those attribute to the calls to foreign
functions as well.

This also allows to remove the special handling of the SRet attribute,
which is ABI-dependent and will be set via the `attr` field of the
return type's `ArgType`.

108b8b6dc7 Deprecate the bytes!() macro.
Replace its usage with byte string literals, except in `bytes!()` tests.
Also add a new snapshot, to be able to use the new b"foo" syntax.

The src/etc/2014-06-rewrite-bytes-macros.py script automatically
rewrites `bytes!()` invocations into byte string literals.
Pass it filenames as arguments to generate a diff that you can inspect,
or `--apply` followed by filenames to apply the changes in place.
Diffs can be piped into `tip` or `pygmentize -l diff` for coloring.

a23511a65d Revamp TaskBuilder API
This patch consolidates and cleans up the task spawning APIs:

* Removes the problematic `future_result` method from `std::task::TaskBuilder`,
  and adds a `try_future` that both spawns the task and returns a future
  representing its eventual result (or failure).

* Removes the public `opts` field from `TaskBuilder`, instead adding appropriate
  builder methods to configure the task.

* Adds extension traits to libgreen and libnative that add methods to
  `TaskBuilder` for spawning the task as a green or native thread.

Previously, there was no way to benefit from the `TaskBuilder` functionality and
also set the scheduler to spawn within.

With this change, all task spawning scenarios are supported through the
`TaskBuilder` interface.

4c2a8bbc09 Adapt test case to match current set of emitted warnings. (or lack
thereof.)

PR 14739 injected the new message that this removes from one test
case: borrowck-vec-pattern-loan-from-mut.rs

When reviewing the test case, I was not able to convince myself that
the error message was a legitimate thing to start emitting.  Niko did
not see an obvious reason for it either, so I am going to remove it
and wait for someone (maybe Cameron Zwarich) to explain to me why we
should be emitting it.

375c5b884f Fix --disable-rpath and tests
This involved a few changes to the local build system:

* Makefiles now prefer our own LD_LIBRARY_PATH over the user's LD_LIBRARY_PATH
  in order to support building rust with rust already installed.
* The compiletest program was taught to correctly pass through the aux dir as a
  component of LD_LIBRARY_PATH in more situations.

This change was spliced out of #14832 to consist of just the fixes to running
tests without an rpath setting embedded in executables.

04eced750e std: Improve pipe() functionality
* os::pipe() now returns IoResult<os::Pipe>
* os::pipe() is now unsafe because it does not arrange for deallocation of file
  descriptors
* os::Pipe fields are renamed from input to reader and out to write.
* PipeStream::pair() has been added. This is a safe method to get a pair of
  pipes.
* Dealing with pipes in native process bindings have been improved to be more
  robust in the face of failure and intermittent errors. This converts a few
  fail!() situations to Err situations.

d7de4e9aff Enforce stronger guarantees for mutable borrows
Implement the stronger guarantees for mutable borrows from #12624. This
removes the ability to read from a mutably borrowed path for the
duration of the borrow, and enforces a unique access path for any
mutable borrow, for both reads and writes.

This makes mutable borrows work better with concurrent accesses from
multiple threads, and it opens the door for allowing moves out of
mutably borrowed values, as long as a new value is written before the
mutable borrow ends. This also aligns Rust more closely with academic
languages based on substructural types and separation logic.

The most common situation triggering an error after this change is a
call to a function mutably borrowing self with self.field as one of the
arguments. The workaround is to bind self.field to a temporary, but the
need for these temporaries will hopefully go away after #6268 is fixed.

Another situation that triggers an error is using the head expression of
a match in an arm that binds a variable with a mutable reference. The
use of the head expression needs to be replaced with an expression that
reconstructs it from match-bound variables.

This fixes #12624.

9153d8ad6c Introduce VecPerParamSpace and use it to represent sets of types and
parameters

This involves numerous substeps:

1. Treat Self same as any other parameter.
2. No longer compute offsets for method parameters.
3. Store all generic types (both trait/impl and method) with a method,
   eliminating odd discrepancies.
4. Stop doing unspeakable things to static methods and instead just use
   the natural types, now that we can easily add the type parameters from
   trait into the method's polytype.
5. No doubt some more. It was hard to separate these into distinct commits.

0a98a4e422 debuginfo: Generate cross-crate unique type identifiers for debuginfo types.
With this change, rustc creates a unique type identifier for types in debuginfo. These type identifiers are used by LLVM to correctly handle link-time-optimization scenarios but also help rustc with dealing with inlining from other crates. For more information, see the documentation block at the top of librustc/middle/trans/debuginfo.rs.

1a381fa2d2 librustc: Use *signed* extension when converting enums to floats.
Previously, constants used unsigned extension, while non-constants used
signed extension. This unifies both paths to use signed extension.

If this breaks your code, take a deep breath, go for a walk, and
consider why you're relying on the sign extension semantics of
enum-to-float casts.

da0703973a core: Move the collections traits to libcollections
This commit moves Mutable, Map, MutableMap, Set, and MutableSet from
`core::collections` to the `collections` crate at the top-level. Additionally,
this removes the `deque` module and moves the `Deque` trait to only being
available at the top-level of the collections crate.

All functionality continues to be reexported through `std::collections`.

653f57af20 Fix bad borrowck tests and move them from run-pass to compile-fail
The move_after_borrow / fu_move_after_borrow tests in
run-pass/borrowck-field-sensitivity.rs are not testing the right thing,
since the scope of the borrow is limited to the call to borrow(). When
fixed, these tests fail and thus should be moved to the corresponding
compile-fail test file.

A number of borrowck field-sensitivity tests perform more moves and
copies than their naming scheme would indicate. This is only necessary
for borrowed pointers (to ensure that the borrowws stay alive in the
near future when borrow liveness is tracked), but all other test
functions should be changed to match their name more closely.

d4dec4701a rustc: Preserve reachable extern fns with LTO
All rust functions are internal implementation details with respect to the ABI
exposed by crates, but extern fns are public components of the ABI and shouldn't
be stripped. This commit serializes reachable extern fns to metadata, so when
LTO is performed all of their symbols are not stripped.

f35328caed rustc: Avoid UB with signed division/remainder
Division and remainder by 0 are undefined behavior, and are detected at runtime.
This commit adds support for ensuring that MIN / -1 is also checked for at
runtime, as this would cause signed overflow, or undefined behvaior.

As with the previous commit with `librand`, this commit shuffles around some
`collections` code. The new state of the world is similar to that of librand:

* The libcollections crate now only depends on libcore and liballoc.
* The standard library has a new module, `std::collections`. All functionality
  of libcollections is reexported through this module.

I would like to stress that this change is purely cosmetic. There are very few
alterations to these primitives.

There are a number of notable points about the new organization:

* std::{str, slice, string, vec} all moved to libcollections. There is no reason
  that these primitives shouldn't be necessarily usable in a freestanding
  context that has allocation. These are all reexported in their usual places in
  the standard library.

* The `hashmap`, and transitively the `lru_cache`, modules no longer reside in
  `libcollections`, but rather in libstd. The reason for this is because the
  `HashMap::new` contructor requires access to the OSRng for initially seeding
  the hash map. Beyond this requirement, there is no reason that the hashmap
  could not move to libcollections.

  I do, however, have a plan to move the hash map to the collections module. The
  `HashMap::new` function could be altered to require that the `H` hasher
  parameter ascribe to the `Default` trait, allowing the entire `hashmap` module
  to live in libcollections. The key idea would be that the default hasher would
  be different in libstd. Something along the lines of:

      // src/libstd/collections/mod.rs

      pub type HashMap<K, V, H = RandomizedSipHasher> =
            core_collections::HashMap<K, V, H>;

  This is not possible today because you cannot invoke static methods through
  type aliases. If we modified the compiler, however, to allow invocation of
  static methods through type aliases, then this type definition would
  essentially be switching the default hasher from `SipHasher` in libcollections
  to a libstd-defined `RandomizedSipHasher` type. This type's `Default`
  implementation would randomly seed the `SipHasher` instance, and otherwise
  perform the same as `SipHasher`.

  This future state doesn't seem incredibly far off, but until that time comes,
  the hashmap module will live in libstd to not compromise on functionality.

* In preparation for the hashmap moving to libcollections, the `hash` module has
  moved from libstd to libcollections. A previously snapshotted commit enables a
  distinct `Writer` trait to live in the `hash` module which `Hash`
  implementations are now parameterized over.

  Due to using a custom trait, the `SipHasher` implementation has lost its
  specialized methods for writing integers. These can be re-added
  backwards-compatibly in the future via default methods if necessary, but the
  FNV hashing should satisfy much of the need for speedier hashing.

A list of breaking changes:

* HashMap::{get, get_mut} no longer fails with the key formatted into the error
  message with `{:?}`, instead, a generic message is printed. With backtraces,
  it should still be not-too-hard to track down errors.

* The HashMap, HashSet, and LruCache types are now available through
  std::collections instead of the collections crate.

* Manual implementations of hash should be parameterized over `hash::Writer`
  instead of just `Writer`.

* The librand crate now only depends on libcore. This interface is experimental.
* The standard library has a new module, `std::rand`. This interface will
  eventually become stable.

Unfortunately, this entailed more of a breaking change than just shuffling some
names around. The following breaking changes were made to the rand library:

* Rng::gen_vec() was removed. This has been replaced with Rng::gen_iter() which
  will return an infinite stream of random values. Previous behavior can be
  regained with `rng.gen_iter().take(n).collect()`

* Rng::gen_ascii_str() was removed. This has been replaced with
  Rng::gen_ascii_chars() which will return an infinite stream of random ascii
  characters. Similarly to gen_iter(), previous behavior can be emulated with
  `rng.gen_ascii_chars().take(n).collect()`

* {IsaacRng, Isaac64Rng, XorShiftRng}::new() have all been removed. These all
  relied on being able to use an OSRng for seeding, but this is no longer
  available in librand (where these types are defined). To retain the same
  functionality, these types now implement the `Rand` trait so they can be
  generated with a random seed from another random number generator. This allows
  the stdlib to use an OSRng to create seeded instances of these RNGs.

* Rand implementations for `Box<T>` and `@T` were removed. These seemed to be
  pretty rare in the codebase, and it allows for libcore to not depend on
  liballoc.  Additionally, other pointer types like Rc<T> and Arc<T> were not
  supported.  If this is undesirable, librand can depend on liballoc and regain
  these implementations.

* The WeightedChoice structure is no longer built with a `Vec<Weighted<T>>`,
   but rather a `&mut [Weighted<T>]`. This means that the WeightedChoice
   structure now has a lifetime associated with it.

* {IsaacRng, Isaac64Rng, XorShiftRng}::new() have all been removed. These all
  relied on being able to use an OSRng for seeding, but this is no longer
  available in librand (where these types are defined). To retain the same
  functionality, these types now implement the `Rand` trait so they can be
  generated with a random seed from another random number generator. This allows
  the stdlib to use an OSRng to create seeded instances of these RNGs.

* Rand implementations for `Box<T>` and `@T` were removed. These seemed to be
  pretty rare in the codebase, and it allows for librand to not depend on
  liballoc.  Additionally, other pointer types like Rc<T> and Arc<T> were not
  supported.  If this is undesirable, librand can depend on liballoc and regain
  these implementations.

* The WeightedChoice structure is no longer built with a `Vec<Weighted<T>>`,
  but rather a `&mut [Weighted<T>]`. This means that the WeightedChoice
  structure now has a lifetime associated with it.

* The `sample` method on `Rng` has been moved to a top-level function in the
  `rand` module due to its dependence on `Vec`.

eea329b0f7 debuginfo: Make DWARF representation of enums uniform.
So far the DWARF information for enums was different
for regular enums, univariant enums, Option-like enums,
etc. Regular enums were encoded as unions of structs,
while the other variants were encoded as bare structs.

With the changes in this PR all enums are encoded as
unions so that debuggers can reconstruct if something
originally was a struct, a univariant enum, or an
Option-like enum. For the latter case, information
about the Null variant is encoded into the union field
name. This information can then be used by the
debugger to print a None value actually as None
instead of Some(0x0).

to a stdio number.

To work around the problems of the child, this commit alters the process
spawning code to map stdio fds to /dev/null on unix (and a similar equivalent on
windows) when they are specified as being ignored. This should allow spawned
programs to have more expected behavior when opening new files.

b53454e2e4 Move std::{reflect,repr,Poly} to a libdebug crate
This commit moves reflection (as well as the {:?} format modifier) to a new
libdebug crate, all of which is marked experimental.

This is a breaking change because it now requires the debug crate to be
explicitly linked if the :? format qualifier is used. This means that any code
using this feature will have to add `extern crate debug;` to the top of the
crate. Any code relying on reflection will also need to do this.

Change `for` desugaring & make refutable pattern errors more precise

This changes for to desugar to the `let`-based pattern match as described in #14390, and adjusts the compiler to use this information for error messages that even mention that it's in a `for` loop.

Also, it makes the compiler record the exact positions of refutable parts of a pattern, to point to exactly them in error messages.

f2a137829e syntax: desugar a for loop to a let binding to get better error
messages when the pattern is refutable.

This means the compiler points directly to the pattern and said that the
problem is the pattern being refutable (rather than just saying that
some value isn't covered in the `match` as it did previously).

c327080ee0 rustc: add a lint for large enum variants
It can be easy to accidentally bloat the size of an enum by making one variant
larger than the others. When this happens, it usually goes unnoticed. This
commit adds a lint that can warn when the largest variant in an enum is more
than 3 times larger than the second-largest variant. This requires a little
bit of rejiggering, because size information is only available in trans, but
lint levels are only available in the lint context.

It is allow by default because it's pretty noisy, and isn't really *that*
undesirable.
