`-Z collapse-macro-debuginfo` is stabilized as `-C collapse-macro-debuginfo`.
It now supports all typical boolean values (`parse_opt_bool`) in addition to just yes/no.

Default value of `collapse_debuginfo` was changed from `false` to `external` (i.e. collapsed if external, not collapsed if local).
`#[collapse_debuginfo]` attribute without a value is no longer supported to avoid guessing the default.

Rollup merge of #123462 - fmease:rn-mod-sep-to-path-sep, r=nnethercote
Cleanup: Rename `ModSep` to `PathSep`

`::` is usually referred to as the *path separator* (citation needed).

The existing name `ModSep` for *module separator* is a bit misleading since it in fact separates the segments of arbitrary path segments, not only ones resolving to modules. Let me just give a shout-out to associated items (`T::Assoc`, `<Ty as Trait>::function`) and enum variants (`Option::None`).

Motivation: Reduce friction for new contributors, prevent potential confusion.

Rollup merge of #121619 - RossSmyth:pfix_match, r=petrochenkov
Experimental feature postfix match

This has a basic experimental implementation for the RFC postfix match (rust-lang/rfcs#3295, #121618). [Liaison is](https://rust-lang.zulipchat.com/#narrow/stream/213817-t-lang/topic/Postfix.20Match.20Liaison/near/423301844) ```@scottmcm``` with the lang team's [experimental feature gate process](https://github.com/rust-lang/lang-team/blob/master/src/how_to/experiment.md).

This feature has had an RFC for a while, and there has been discussion on it for a while. It would probably be valuable to see it out in the field rather than continue discussing it. This feature also allows to see how popular postfix expressions like this are for the postfix macros RFC, as those will take more time to implement.

It is entirely implemented in the parser, so it should be relatively easy to remove if needed.

This PR is split in to 5 commits to ease review.

1. The implementation of the feature & gating.
2. Add a MatchKind field, fix uses, fix pretty.
3. Basic rustfmt impl, as rustfmt crashes upon seeing this syntax without a fix.
4. Add new MatchSource to HIR for Clippy & other HIR consumers

Stabilize associated type bounds (RFC 2289)

This PR stabilizes associated type bounds, which were laid out in [RFC 2289]. This gives us a shorthand to express nested type bounds that would otherwise need to be expressed with nested `impl Trait` or broken into several `where` clauses.

### What are we stabilizing?

We're stabilizing the associated item bounds syntax, which allows us to put bounds in associated type position within other bounds, i.e. `T: Trait<Assoc: Bounds...>`. See [RFC 2289] for motivation.

In all position, the associated type bound syntax expands into a set of two (or more) bounds, and never anything else (see "How does this differ[...]" section for more info).

Associated type bounds are stabilized in four positions:
* **`where` clauses (and APIT)** - This is equivalent to breaking up the bound into two (or more) `where` clauses. For example, `where T: Trait<Assoc: Bound>` is equivalent to `where T: Trait, <T as Trait>::Assoc: Bound`.
* **Supertraits** - Similar to above, `trait CopyIterator: Iterator<Item: Copy> {}`. This is almost equivalent to breaking up the bound into two (or more) `where` clauses; however, the bound on the associated item is implied whenever the trait is used. See #112573/#112629.
* **Associated type item bounds** - This allows constraining the *nested* rigid projections that are associated with a trait's associated types. e.g. `trait Trait { type Assoc: Trait2<Assoc2: Copy>; }`.
* **opaque item bounds (RPIT, TAIT)** - This allows constraining associated types that are associated with the opaque without having to *name* the opaque. For example, `impl Iterator<Item: Copy>` defines an iterator whose item is `Copy` without having to actually name that item bound.

The latter three are not expressible in surface Rust (though for associated type item bounds, this will change in #120752, which I don't believe should block this PR), so this does represent a slight expansion of what can be expressed in trait bounds.

### How does this differ from the RFC?

Compared to the RFC, the current implementation *always* desugars associated type bounds to sets of `ty::Clause`s internally. Specifically, it does *not* introduce a position-dependent desugaring as laid out in [RFC 2289], and in particular:
* It does *not* desugar to anonymous associated items in associated type item bounds.
* It does *not* desugar to nested RPITs in RPIT bounds, nor nested TAITs in TAIT bounds.

This position-dependent desugaring laid out in the RFC existed simply to side-step limitations of the trait solver, which have mostly been fixed in #120584. The desugaring laid out in the RFC also added unnecessary complication to the design of the feature, and introduces its own limitations to, for example:
* Conditionally lowering to nested `impl Trait` in certain positions such as RPIT and TAIT means that we inherit the limitations of RPIT/TAIT, namely lack of support for higher-ranked opaque inference. See this code example: https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/120752#issuecomment-1979412531.
* Introducing anonymous associated types makes traits no longer object safe, since anonymous associated types are not nameable, and all associated types must be named in `dyn` types.

This last point motivates why this PR is *not* stabilizing support for associated type bounds in `dyn` types, e.g, `dyn Assoc<Item: Bound>`. Why? Because `dyn` types need to have *concrete* types for all associated items, this would necessitate a distinct lowering for associated type bounds, which seems both complicated and unnecessary compared to just requiring the user to write `impl Trait` themselves. See #120719.

Rollup merge of #121382 - nnethercote:rework-untranslatable_diagnostic-lint, r=davidtwco
Rework `untranslatable_diagnostic` lint

Currently it only checks calls to functions marked with `#[rustc_lint_diagnostics]`. This PR changes it to check calls to any function with an `impl Into<{D,Subd}iagnosticMessage>` parameter. This greatly improves its coverage and doesn't rely on people remembering to add `#[rustc_lint_diagnostics]`. It also lets us add `#[rustc_lint_diagnostics]` to a number of functions that don't have an `impl Into<{D,Subd}iagnosticMessage>`, such as `Diag::span`.

that's also used for `Session` values, which are often co-located, and
it can be difficult to know which type a value named `sess` refers to.
(That annoyance is the main motivation for this change.) `psess` is nice
and short, which is good for a name used this much.

326b44e4d3 Fix panic when compiling Rocket.
`Rustc::emit_diagnostic` reconstructs a diagnostic passed in from the
macro machinery. Currently it uses the type `DiagnosticBuilder<'_,
ErrorGuaranteed>`, which is incorrect, because the diagnostic might be a
warning. And if it is a warning, because of the `ErrorGuaranteed` we end
up calling into `emit_producing_error_guaranteed` and the assertion
within that function (correctly) fails because the level is not an error
level.

The fix is simple: change the type to `DiagnosticBuilder<'_, ()>`. Using
`()` works no matter what the diagnostic level is, and we don't need an
`ErrorGuaranteed` here.

The panic was reported in #120576.

Overhaul `Diagnostic` and `DiagnosticBuilder`

Implements the first part of https://github.com/rust-lang/compiler-team/issues/722, which moves functionality and use away from `Diagnostic`, onto `DiagnosticBuilder`.

Likely follow-ups:
- Move things around, because this PR was written to minimize diff size, so some things end up in sub-optimal places. E.g. `DiagnosticBuilder` has impls in both `diagnostic.rs` and `diagnostic_builder.rs`.
- Rename `Diagnostic` as `DiagInner` and `DiagnosticBuilder` as `Diag`.

f6f8779843 Reduce capabilities of Diagnostic.
Currently many diagnostic modifier methods are available on both
`Diagnostic` and `DiagnosticBuilder`. This commit removes most of them
from `Diagnostic`. To minimize the diff size, it keeps them within
`diagnostic.rs` but changes the surrounding `impl Diagnostic` block to
`impl DiagnosticBuilder`. (I intend to move things around later, to give
a more sensible code layout.)

`Diagnostic` keeps a few methods that it still needs, like `sub`,
`arg`, and `replace_args`.

The `forward!` macro, which defined two additional methods per call
(e.g. `note` and `with_note`), is replaced by the `with_fn!` macro,
which defines one additional method per call (e.g. `with_note`). It's
now also only used when necessary -- not all modifier methods currently
need a `with_*` form. (New ones can be easily added as necessary.)

All this also requires changing `trait AddToDiagnostic` so its methods
take `DiagnosticBuilder` instead of `Diagnostic`, which leads to many
mechanical changes. `SubdiagnosticMessageOp` gains a type parameter `G`.

There are three subdiagnostics -- `DelayedAtWithoutNewline`,
`DelayedAtWithNewline`, and `InvalidFlushedDelayedDiagnosticLevel` --
that are created within the diagnostics machinery and appended to
external diagnostics. These are handled at the `Diagnostic` level, which
means it's now hard to construct them via `derive(Diagnostic)`, so
instead we construct them by hand. This has no effect on what they look
like when printed.

There are lots of new `allow` markers for `untranslatable_diagnostics`
and `diagnostics_outside_of_impl`. This is because
`#[rustc_lint_diagnostics]` annotations were present on the `Diagnostic`
modifier methods, but missing from the `DiagnosticBuilder` modifier
methods. They're now present.

b18f3e11fa Prefer DiagnosticBuilder over Diagnostic in diagnostic modifiers.
There are lots of functions that modify a diagnostic. This can be via a
`&mut Diagnostic` or a `&mut DiagnosticBuilder`, because the latter type
wraps the former and impls `DerefMut`.

This commit converts all the `&mut Diagnostic` occurrences to `&mut
DiagnosticBuilder`. This is a step towards greatly simplifying
`Diagnostic`. Some of the relevant function are made generic, because
they deal with both errors and warnings. No function bodies are changed,
because all the modifier methods are available on both `Diagnostic` and
`DiagnosticBuilder`.

macro_rules: Preserve all metavariable spans in a global side table

This PR preserves spans of `tt` metavariables used to pass tokens to declarative macros.
Such metavariable spans can then be used in span combination operations like `Span::to` to improve all kinds of diagnostics.

Spans of non-`tt` metavariables are currently kept in nonterminal tokens, but the long term plan is remove all nonterminal tokens from rustc parser and rely on the proc macro model with invisible delimiters (#114647, #67062).
In particular, `NtIdent` nonterminal (corresponding to `ident` metavariables) becomes easy to remove when this PR lands (#119412 does it).

The metavariable spans are kept in a global side table keyed by `Span`s of original tokens.
The alternative to the side table is keeping them in `SpanData` instead, but the performance regressions would be large because any spans from tokens passed to declarative macros would stop being inline and would work through span interner instead, and the penalty would be paid even if we never use the metavar span for the given original span.
(But also see the comment on `fn maybe_use_metavar_location` describing the map collision issues with the side table approach.)

There are also other alternatives - keeping the metavar span in `Token` or `TokenTree`, but associating it with `Span` itsel is the most natural choice because metavar spans are used in span combining operations, and those operations are not necessarily tied to tokens.

Subdiagnostics don't need to be lazily translated, they can always be eagerly translated. Eager translation is slightly more complex as we need to have a `DiagCtxt` available to perform the translation, which involves slightly more threading of that context.

This slight increase in complexity should enable later simplifications - like passing `DiagCtxt` into `AddToDiagnostic` and moving Fluent messages into the diagnostic structs rather than having them in separate files (working on that was what led to this change).

5d9dfbd08f Stop using String for error codes.
Error codes are integers, but `String` is used everywhere to represent
them. Gross!

This commit introduces `ErrCode`, an integral newtype for error codes,
replacing `String`. It also introduces a constant for every error code,
e.g. `E0123`, and removes the `error_code!` macro. The constants are
imported wherever used with `use rustc_errors::codes::*`.

With the old code, we have three different ways to specify an error code
at a use point:
```
error_code!(E0123)  // macro call
struct_span_code_err!(dcx, span, E0123, "msg");  // bare ident arg to macro call
\#[diag(name, code = "E0123")]  // string
struct Diag;
```

With the new code, they all use the `E0123` constant.
```
E0123  // constant
struct_span_code_err!(dcx, span, E0123, "msg");  // constant
\#[diag(name, code = E0123)]  // constant
struct Diag;
```

The commit also changes the structure of the error code definitions:
- `rustc_error_codes` now just defines a higher-order macro listing the
  used error codes and nothing else.
- Because that's now the only thing in the `rustc_error_codes` crate, I
  moved it into the `lib.rs` file and removed the `error_codes.rs` file.
- `rustc_errors` uses that macro to define everything, e.g. the error
  code constants and the `DIAGNOSTIC_TABLES`. This is in its new
  `codes.rs` file.

ed76b0b882 Rename consuming chaining methods on DiagnosticBuilder.
In #119606 I added them and used a `_mv` suffix, but that wasn't great.

A `with_` prefix has three different existing uses.
- Constructors, e.g. `Vec::with_capacity`.
- Wrappers that provide an environment to execute some code, e.g.
  `with_session_globals`.
- Consuming chaining methods, e.g. `Span::with_{lo,hi,ctxt}`.

The third case is exactly what we want, so this commit changes
`DiagnosticBuilder::foo_mv` to `DiagnosticBuilder::with_foo`.

Consuming `emit`

This PR makes `DiagnosticBuilder::emit` consuming, i.e. take `self` instead of `&mut self`. This is good because it doesn't make sense to emit a diagnostic twice.

This requires some changes to `DiagnosticBuilder` method changing -- every existing non-consuming chaining method gets a new consuming partner with a `_mv` suffix -- but permits a host of beneficial follow-up changes: more concise code through more chaining, removal of redundant diagnostic construction API methods, and removal of machinery to track the possibility of a diagnostic being emitted multiple times.

Nicholas Nethercote
b1b9278851 Make DiagnosticBuilder::emit consuming.
This works for most of its call sites. This is nice, because `emit` very
much makes sense as a consuming operation -- indeed,
`DiagnosticBuilderState` exists to ensure no diagnostic is emitted
twice, but it uses runtime checks.

For the small number of call sites where a consuming emit doesn't work,
the commit adds `DiagnosticBuilder::emit_without_consuming`. (This will
be removed in subsequent commits.)

Likewise, `emit_unless` becomes consuming. And `delay_as_bug` becomes
consuming, while `delay_as_bug_without_consuming` is added (which will
also be removed in subsequent commits.)

All this requires significant changes to `DiagnosticBuilder`'s chaining
methods. Currently `DiagnosticBuilder` method chaining uses a
non-consuming `&mut self -> &mut Self` style, which allows chaining to
be used when the chain ends in `emit()`, like so:
```
    struct_err(msg).span(span).emit();
```
But it doesn't work when producing a `DiagnosticBuilder` value,
requiring this:
```
    let mut err = self.struct_err(msg);
    err.span(span);
    err
```
This style of chaining won't work with consuming `emit` though. For
that, we need to use to a `self -> Self` style. That also would allow
`DiagnosticBuilder` production to be chained, e.g.:
```
    self.struct_err(msg).span(span)
```
However, removing the `&mut self -> &mut Self` style would require that
individual modifications of a `DiagnosticBuilder` go from this:
```
    err.span(span);
```
to this:
```
    err = err.span(span);
```
There are *many* such places. I have a high tolerance for tedious
refactorings, but even I gave up after a long time trying to convert
them all.

Instead, this commit has it both ways: the existing `&mut self -> Self`
chaining methods are kept, and new `self -> Self` chaining methods are
added, all of which have a `_mv` suffix (short for "move"). Changes to
the existing `forward!` macro lets this happen with very little
additional boilerplate code. I chose to add the suffix to the new
chaining methods rather than the existing ones, because the number of
changes required is much smaller that way.

This doubled chainging is a bit clumsy, but I think it is worthwhile
because it allows a *lot* of good things to subsequently happen. In this
commit, there are many `mut` qualifiers removed in places where
diagnostics are emitted without being modified. In subsequent commits:
- chaining can be used more, making the code more concise;
- more use of chaining also permits the removal of redundant diagnostic
  APIs like `struct_err_with_code`, which can be replaced easily with
  `struct_err` + `code_mv`;
- `emit_without_diagnostic` can be removed, which simplifies a lot of
  machinery, removing the need for `DiagnosticBuilderState`.

Refactor AST trait bound modifiers

Instead of having two types to represent trait bound modifiers in the parser / the AST (`parser::ty::BoundModifiers` & `ast::TraitBoundModifier`), only to map one to the other later, just use `parser::ty::BoundModifiers` (moved & renamed to `ast::TraitBoundModifiers`).

The struct type is more extensible and easier to deal with (see [here](https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/119099/files#r1430749981) and [here](https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/119099/files#r1430752116) for context) since it more closely models what it represents: A compound of two kinds of modifiers, constness and polarity. Modeling this as an enum (the now removed `ast::TraitBoundModifier`) meant one had to add a new variant per *combination* of modifier kind, which simply isn't scalable and which lead to a lot of explicit non-DRY matches.

NB: `hir::TraitBoundModifier` being an enum is fine since HIR doesn't need to worry representing invalid modifier kind combinations as those get rejected during AST validation thereby immensely cutting down the number of possibilities.

Rollup merge of #118802 - ehuss:remove-edition-preview, r=TaKO8Ki
Remove edition umbrella features.

In the 2018 edition, there was an "umbrella" feature `#[feature(rust_2018_preview)]` which was used to enable several other features at once. This umbrella mechanism was not used in the 2021 edition and likely will not be used in 2024 either. During 2018 users reported that setting the feature was awkward, especially since they already needed to opt-in via the edition mechanism.

This PR removes this mechanism because I believe it will not be used (and will clean up and simplify the code). I believe that there are better ways to handle features and editions. In short:

- For highly experimental features, that may or may not be involved in an edition, they can implement regular feature gates like `tcx.features().my_feature`.
- For experimental features that *might* be involved in an edition, they should implement gates with `tcx.features().my_feature && span.at_least_rust_20xx()`. This requires the user to still specify `#![feature(my_feature)]`, to avoid disrupting testing of other edition features which are ready and have been accepted within the edition.
- For experimental features that have graduated to definitely be part of an edition, they should implement gates with `tcx.features().my_feature || span.at_least_rust_20xx()`, or just remove the feature check altogether and just check `span.at_least_rust_20xx()`.
- For relatively simple changes, they can skip the whole feature gating thing and just check `span.at_least_rust_20xx()`, and rely on the instability of the edition itself (which requires `-Zunstable-options`) to gate it.

I am working on documenting all of this in the rustc-dev-guide.

```
925f7fad57 Improve print_tts by changing tokenstream::Spacing.
`tokenstream::Spacing` appears on all `TokenTree::Token` instances,
both punct and non-punct. Its current usage:
- `Joint` means "can join with the next token *and* that token is a
  punct".
- `Alone` means "cannot join with the next token *or* can join with the
  next token but that token is not a punct".
The fact that `Alone` is used for two different cases is awkward.
This commit augments `tokenstream::Spacing` with a new variant
`JointHidden`, resulting in:
- `Joint` means "can join with the next token *and* that token is a
  punct".
- `JointHidden` means "can join with the next token *and* that token is a
  not a punct".
- `Alone` means "cannot join with the next token".
This *drastically* improves the output of `print_tts`. For example,
this:
```
stringify!(let a: Vec<u32> = vec![];)
```
currently produces this string:
```
let a : Vec < u32 > = vec! [] ;
```
With this PR, it now produces this string:
```
let a: Vec<u32> = vec![] ;
```
(The space after the `]` is because `TokenTree::Delimited` currently
doesn't have spacing information. The subsequent commit fixes this.)
The new `print_tts` doesn't replicate original code perfectly. E.g.
multiple space characters will be condensed into a single space
character. But it's much improved.
`print_tts` still produces the old, uglier output for code produced by
proc macros. Because we have to translate the generated code from
`proc_macro::Spacing` to the more expressive `token::Spacing`, which
results in too much `proc_macro::Along` usage and no
`proc_macro::JointHidden` usage. So `space_between` still exists and
is used by `print_tts` in conjunction with the `Spacing` field.
This change will also help with the removal of `Token::Interpolated`.
Currently interpolated tokens are pretty-printed nicely via AST pretty
printing. `Token::Interpolated` removal will mean they get printed with
`print_tts`. Without this change, that would result in much uglier
output for code produced by decl macro expansions. With this change, AST
pretty printing and `print_tts` produce similar results.
The commit also tweaks the comments on `proc_macro::Spacing`. In
particular, it refers to "compound tokens" rather than "multi-char
operators" because lifetimes aren't operators.
f967532a47 Auto merge of #118420 - compiler-errors:async-gen, r=eholk
Introduce support for `async gen` blocks
I'm delighted to demonstrate that `async gen` block are not very difficult to support. They're simply coroutines that yield `Poll<Option<T>>` and return `()`.
**This PR is WIP and in draft mode for now** -- I'm mostly putting it up to show folks that it's possible. This PR needs a lang-team experiment associated with it or possible an RFC, since I don't think it falls under the jurisdiction of the `gen` RFC that was recently authored by oli (https://github.com/rust-lang/rfcs/pull/3513, https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/117078).
### Technical note on the pre-generator-transform yield type:
The reason that the underlying coroutines yield `Poll<Option<T>>` and not `Poll<T>` (which would make more sense, IMO, for the pre-transformed coroutine), is because the `TransformVisitor` that is used to turn coroutines into built-in state machine functions would have to destructure and reconstruct the latter into the former, which requires at least inserting a new basic block (for a `switchInt` terminator, to match on the `Poll` discriminant).
This does mean that the desugaring (at the `rustc_ast_lowering` level) of `async gen` blocks is a bit more involved. However, since we already need to intercept both `.await` and `yield` operators, I don't consider it much of a technical burden.
never_patterns: Parse match arms with no body
Never patterns are meant to signal unreachable cases, and thus don't take bodies:
```rust
let ptr: *const Option<!> = ...;
match *ptr {

}
```
This PR makes rustc accept the above, and enforces that an arm has a body xor is a never pattern. This affects parsing of match arms even with the feature off, so this is delicate. (Plus this is my first non-trivial change to the parser).
f405ce86c2 Minimize pub usage in source_map.rs.
Most notably, this commit changes the `pub use crate::*;` in that file
to `use crate::*;`. This requires a lot of `use` items in other crates
to be adjusted, because everything defined within `rustc_span::*` was
also available via `rustc_span::source_map::*`, which is bizarre.
The commit also removes `SourceMap::span_to_relative_line_string`, which
is unused.
Stop telling people to submit bugs for internal feature ICEs
This keeps track of usage of internal features, and changes the message to instead tell them that using internal features is not supported.
I thought about several ways to do this but now used the explicit threading of an `Arc<AtomicBool>` through `Session`. This is not exactly incremental-safe, but this is fine, as this is set during macro expansion, which is pre-incremental, and also only affects the output of ICEs, at which point incremental correctness doesn't matter much anyways.
See [MCP 620.](https://github.com/rust-lang/compiler-team/issues/596)
d284c8a2d7 Rename ACTIVE_FEATURES as UNSTABLE_FEATURES.
It's a better name, and lets "active features" refer to the features
that are active in a particular program, due to being declared or
enabled by the edition.
The commit also renames `Features::enabled` as `Features::active` to
match this; I changed my mind and have decided that "active" is a little
better thatn "enabled" for this, particularly because a number of
pre-existing comments use "active" in this way.
Finally, the commit renames `Status::Stable` as `Status::Accepted`, to
match `ACCEPTED_FEATURES`.
41b6899487 Remove rustc_feature::State.
`State` is used to distinguish active vs accepted vs removed features.
However, these can also be distinguished by their location, in
`ACTIVE_FEATURES`, `ACCEPTED_FEATURES`, and `REMOVED_FEATURES`.
So this commit removes `State` and moves the internals of its variants
next to the `Feature` in each element of `*_FEATURES`, introducing new
types `ActiveFeature` and `RemovedFeature`. (There is no need for
`AcceptedFeature` because `State::Accepted` had no fields.)
This is a tighter type representation, avoids the need for some runtime
checks, and makes the code a bit shorter.
95d1aa075f Record all declared features.
Currently `rust_20XX_preview` features aren't recorded as declared even
when they are explicit declared. Similarly, redundant edition-dependent
features (e.g. `test_2018_feature`) aren't recorded as declared.
This commit marks them as recorded. There is no detectable functional
change, but it makes things more consistent.
4602d9257d Rename Features::active_features.
The word "active" is currently used in two different and confusing ways:
- `ACTIVE_FEATURES` actually means "available unstable features"
- `Features::active_features` actually means "features declared in the
  crate's code", which can include feature within `ACTIVE_FEATURES` but
  also others.
(This is also distinct from "enabled" features which includes declared
features but also some edition-specific features automatically enabled
depending on the edition in use.)
This commit changes the `Features::active_features` to
`Features::declared_features` which actually matches its meaning.
Likewise, `Features::active` becomes `Features::declared`.
b229be0127 Overhaul config::features.
The new way of doing things:
- Avoids some code duplication.
- Distinguishes the `crate_edition` (which comes from `--edition`) and
  the `features_edition` (which combines `--edition` along with any
  `rustc_20XX_preview` features), which is useful.
- Has a simpler initial loop, one that just looks for
  `rustc_20XX_preview` features in order to compute `features_edition`.
- Creates a fallible alternative to `Features::enabled`, which is
  useful.
It's not easy to see how exactly the old and new code are equivalent,
but it's reassuring to know that the test coverage is quite good for
this stuff.
There is a single features (`no_stack_check`) in
`STABLE_REMOVED_FEATURES`. But the treatment of
`STABLE_REMOVED_FEATURES` and `REMOVED_FEATURES` is actually identical.
So this commit just merges them, and uses a comment to record
`no_stack_check`'s unique "stable removed" status.
This also lets `State::Stabilized` (which was a terrible name) be
removed.
Lots of tiny incremental simplifications of `EmitterWriter` internals
ignore the first commit, it's https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/114088 squashed and rebased, but it's needed to use to use `derive_setters`, as they need a newer `syn` version.
Then this PR starts out with removing many arguments that are almost always defaulted to `None` or `false` and replace them with builder methods that can set these fields in the few cases that want to set them.
After that it's one commit after the other that removes or merges things until everything becomes some very simple trait objects
5830ca216d Add internal_features lint
It lints against features that are inteded to be internal to the
compiler and standard library. Implements MCP #596.
We allow `internal_features` in the standard library and compiler as those
use many features and this _is_ the standard library from the "internal to the compiler and
standard library" after all.
Marking some features as internal wasn't exactly the most scientific approach, I just marked some
mostly obvious features. While there is a categorization in the macro,
it's not very well upheld (should probably be fixed in another PR).
We always pass `-Ainternal_features` in the testsuite
About 400 UI tests and several other tests use internal features.
Instead of throwing the attribute on each one, just always allow them.
There's nothing wrong with testing internal features^^
d75ee2a6bc Remove MacDelimiter.
It's the same as `Delimiter`, minus the `Invisible` variant. I'm
generally in favour of using types to make impossible states
unrepresentable, but this one feels very low-value, and the conversions
between the two types are annoying and confusing.
Look at the change in `src/tools/rustfmt/src/expr.rs` for an example:
the old code converted from `MacDelimiter` to `Delimiter` and back
again, for no good reason. This suggests the author was confused about
the types.
