b2db97347b Bit-magic for faster is_char_boundary
The asm generated for b < 128 || b >= 192 is not ideal, as it computes
both sub-inequalities. This patch replaces it with bit magic.

Specialize equality for [T] and comparison for [u8] to use memcmp when possible

Where T is a type that can be compared for equality bytewise, we can use
memcmp. We can also use memcmp for PartialOrd, Ord for [u8].

Use specialization to call memcmp in PartialEq for slices for certain element types. This PR does not change the user visible API since the implementation uses an intermediate trait. See commit messages for more information.

The memcmp signature was changed from `*const i8` to `*const u8` which is in line with how the memcmp function is defined in C (taking const void * arguments, interpreting the values as unsigned bytes for purposes of the comparison).

5d56e1daed Specialize equality for [T] and comparison for [u8]
Where T is a type that can be compared for equality bytewise, we can use
memcmp. We can also use memcmp for PartialOrd, Ord for [u8] and by
extension &str.

This is an improvement for example for the comparison [u8] == [u8] that
used to emit a loop that compared the slices byte by byte.

One worry here could be that this introduces function calls to memcmp
in contexts where it should really inline the comparison or even
optimize it out, but llvm takes care of recognizing memcmp specifically.

f621193e5e Accept 0 as a valid str char boundary
Index 0 must be a valid char boundary (invariant of str that it contains
valid UTF-8 data).

If we check explicitly for index == 0, that removes the need to read the
byte at index 0, so it avoids a trip to the string's memory, and it
optimizes out the slicing index' bounds check whenever it is zero.

With this change, the following examples all change from having a read of
the byte at 0 and a branch to possibly panicing, to having the bounds
checking optimized away.

48d5fe9ec5 std: Change encode_utf{8,16} to return iterators
Currently these have non-traditional APIs which take a buffer and report how
much was filled in, but they're not necessarily ergonomic to use. Returning an
iterator which *also* exposes an underlying slice shouldn't result in any
performance loss as it's just a lazy version of the same implementation, and
it's also much more ergonomic!

2dbac1fb8e Add intrinsics for float arithmetic with fast flag enabled
`fast` a.k.a UnsafeAlgebra is the flag for enabling all "unsafe"
(according to llvm) float optimizations.

See LangRef for more information http://llvm.org/docs/LangRef.html#fast-math-flags

Providing these operations with less precise associativity rules (for
example) is useful to numerical applications.

For example, the summation loop:

    let sum = 0.;
    for element in data {
        sum += *element;
    }

Using the default floating point semantics, this loop expresses the
floats must be added in a sequence, one after another. This constraint
is usually completely unintended, and it means that no autovectorization
is possible.

b53764c73b std: Clean out deprecated APIs
Removes all unstable and deprecated APIs prior to the 1.8 release. All APIs that
are deprecated in the 1.8 release are sticking around for the rest of this
cycle.

Some notable changes are:

* The `dynamic_lib` module was moved into `rustc_back` as the compiler still
  relies on a few bits and pieces.
* The `DebugTuple` formatter now special-cases an empty struct name with only
  one field to append a trailing comma.

Add a link validator to rustbuild

This commit was originally targeted at just adding a link checking script to the rustbuild system. This ended up snowballing a bit to extend rustbuild to be amenable to various tools we have as part of the build system in general.

There's a new `src/tools` directory which has a number of scripts/programs that are purely intended to be used as part of the build system and CI of this repository. This is currently inhabited by rustbook, the error index generator, and a new linkchecker script added as part of this PR. I suspect that more tools like compiletest, tidy scripts, snapshot scripts, etc will migrate their way into this directory over time.

The commit which adds the error index generator shows the steps necessary to add new tools to the build system, namely:

1. New steps are defined for building the tool and running the tool
2. The dependencies are configured
3. The steps are implemented

In terms of the link checker, these commits do a few things:

* A new `src/tools/linkchecker` script is added. This will read an entire documentation tree looking for broken relative links (HTTP links aren't followed yet).
* A large number of broken links throughout the documentation were fixed. Many of these were just broken when viewed from core as opposed to std, but were easily fixed.
* A few rustdoc bugs here and there were fixed

8aa268e731 std: Fix rustdoc links with std::fmt::Alignment
This is actually a reexported implementation detail in the `rt::v1` module but
rustdoc doesn't like reexporting items from `doc(hidden)` modules. Do what we'd
end up doing anyway from an API perspective and make a public-facing `enum` that
can be retranslated under the hood if necessary.

The string may be arbitrarily long, but we want to limit the panic
message to a reasonable length. Truncate the string if it is too long
(simply to char boundary).

Also add details to the start <= end message. I think it's ok to flesh
out the code here, since it's in a cold function.

This PR implements [RFC 1192](https://github.com/rust-lang/rfcs/blob/master/text/1192-inclusive-ranges.md), which is triple-dot syntax for inclusive range expressions. The new stuff is behind two feature gates (one for the syntax and one for the std::ops types). This replaces the deprecated functionality in std::iter. Along the way I simplified the desugaring for all ranges.

This is my first contribution to rust which changes more than one character outside of a test or comment, so please review carefully! Some of the individual commit messages have more of my notes. Also thanks for putting up with my dumb questions in #rust-internals.

- For implementing `std::ops::RangeInclusive`, I took @Stebalien's suggestion from https://github.com/rust-lang/rfcs/pull/1192#issuecomment-137864421. It seemed to me to make the implementation easier and increase type safety. If that stands, the RFC should be amended to avoid confusion.
- I also kind of like @glaebhoerl's [idea](https://github.com/rust-lang/rfcs/pull/1254#issuecomment-147815299), which is unified inclusive/exclusive range syntax something like `x>..=y`. We can experiment with this while everything is behind a feature gate.
- There are a couple of FIXMEs left (see the last commit). I didn't know what to do about `RangeArgument` and I haven't added `Index` impls yet. Those should be discussed/finished before merging.

Hello.

Quite a few of the links in the `core` module concerning redirection to additional primitive type documentation are broken. I noticed in #30214 that there seemed to be a consensus with linking across to `std` module documentation from the `core` module. This is what I've done with the `core` modules for primitive types.

If the changes here are good to go forward with, I'll happily tend to adding more documentation links for the extension traits in the aforementioned issue if need be.

In particular, uses of inclusive ranges within the standard library are
still waiting. Slices and collections can be sliced with `usize` and
`Range*<usize>`, but not yet `Range*Inclusive<usize>`.

Also, we need to figure out what to do about `RangeArgument`. Currently
it has `start()` and `end()` methods which are pretty much identical to
`Range::start` and `Range::end`. For the same reason as Range itself,
these methods can't express a range such as `0...255u8` without
overflow. The easiest choice, it seems to me, is either changing the
meaning of `end()` to be inclusive, or adding a new method, say
`last()`, that is inclusive and specifying that `end()` returns `None`
in cases where it would overflow. Changing the semantics would be a
breaking change, but `RangeArgument` is unstable so maybe we should do
it anyway.

bd3197c748 remove range lang items
The range desugaring does not use the lang items. Hence I did not add
lang items for inclusive ranges. This cleanup commit removes the old
unused ones as well.

Whether the desugaring _should_ use lang items is another question:
see #30809. But if we decide on a strategy there we can add back these
lang items, and new ones for inclusive ranges.

For stage0 we need to keep the attributes as the lang items still exist
even if they are never used.

This is surprisingly not a breaking change. Unused #[lang] attributes do
not even trigger a lint (see #30881).

`wrapping_shl` and `wrapping_shr` are easy to mistake for rotations, when in fact they work somewhat differently. The documentation currently available is a little sparse and easy to misinterpret, so I've added a warning to anyone who bumps into them that the equivalent rotate methods may actually be what they're looking for.

If it's deemed useful to add a symmetrical mention to the documentation for the `rotate_left` and `rotate_right` methods, I can certainly have a go at that, but my gut feeling is that people likely to want a rotate will already know about the wrapping-arithmetic methods, for example from writing CPU simulators.

3e9589c0f4 trans: Reimplement unwinding on MSVC
This commit transitions the compiler to using the new exception handling
instructions in LLVM for implementing unwinding for MSVC. This affects both 32
and 64-bit MSVC as they're both now using SEH-based strategies. In terms of
standard library support, lots more details about how SEH unwinding is
implemented can be found in the commits.

In terms of trans, this change necessitated a few modifications:

* Branches were added to detect when the old landingpad instruction is used or
  the new cleanuppad instruction is used to `trans::cleanup`.
* The return value from `cleanuppad` is not stored in an `alloca` (because it
  cannot be).
* Each block in trans now has an `Option<LandingPad>` instead of `is_lpad: bool`
  for indicating whether it's in a landing pad or not. The new exception
  handling intrinsics require that on MSVC each `call` inside of a landing pad
  is annotated with which landing pad that it's in. This change to the basic
  block means that whenever a `call` or `invoke` instruction is generated we
  know whether to annotate it as part of a cleanuppad or not.
* Lots of modifications were made to the instruction builders to construct the
  new instructions as well as pass the tagging information for the call/invoke
  instructions.
* The translation of the `try` intrinsics for MSVC has been overhauled to use
  the new `catchpad` instruction. The filter function is now also a
  rustc-generated function instead of a purely libstd-defined function. The
  libstd definition still exists, it just has a stable ABI across architectures
  and leaves some of the really weird implementation details to the compiler
  (e.g. the `localescape` and `localrecover` intrinsics).

2fd2670ea0 Unify computation of length in EscapeUnicode
The `offset` value was computed both in `next` and in `size_hint`;
computing it in a single place ensures consistency and makes it easier
to apply improvements. The value is now computed as soon as the
iterator is constructed. This means that the time to compute it is
spent immediately and cannot be avoided, but it also guarantees that
it is only spent once.

Introduce private function  from_raw_parts_mut for str to factor out the logic.

We want to use raw pointers here instead of duplicating a &mut str, to
be on safer ground w.r.t rust aliasing rules.

6a7bc47a8f core: Restore indexed formulation of clone_from_slice
For good codegen here, we need a lock step iteration where the loop
bound is only checked once per iteration; .zip() unfortunately does not
optimize this way.

If we use a counted loop, and make sure that llvm sees that the bounds
check condition is the same as the loop bound condition, the bounds
checks are optimized out. For this reason we need to slice `from`
(apparently) redundantly.

This commit restores the old formulation of clone_from_slice. In this
shape, clone_from_slice will again optimize into calling memcpy where possible
(for example for &[u8] or &[i32]).

Add fast path for ASCII in UTF-8 validation

This speeds up the ASCII case (and long stretches of ASCII in otherwise
mixed UTF-8 data) when checking UTF-8 validity.

Benchmark results suggest that on purely ASCII input, we can improve
throughput (megabytes verified / second) by a factor of 13 to 14 (smallish input).
On XML and mostly English language input (en.wikipedia XML dump),
throughput improves by a factor 7 (large input).

On mostly non-ASCII input, performance increases slightly or is the
same.

The UTF-8 validation is rewritten to use indexed access; since all
access is preceded by a (mandatory for validation) length check, bounds
checks are statically elided by LLVM and this formulation is in fact the best
for performance. A previous version had losses due to slice to iterator
conversions.

A large credit to Björn Steinbrink who improved this patch immensely,
writing this second version.

Benchmark results on x86-64 (Sandy Bridge) compiled with -C opt-level=3.

Old code is `regular`, this PR is called `fast`.

Datasets:

- `ascii` is just ASCII (2.5 kB)
- `cyr` is cyrillic script with ascii spaces (5 kB)

It was recently realized that we accept defaulted type parameters everywhere, without feature gate, even though the only place that we really *intended* to accept them were on types. This PR adds a lint warning unless the "type-parameter-defaults" feature is enabled. This should eventually become a hard error.

This is a [breaking-change] in that new feature gates are required (or simply removing the defaults, which is probably a better choice as they have little effect at this time). Results of a [crater run][crater] suggest that approximately 5-15 crates are affected. I didn't do the measurement quite right so that run cannot distinguish "true" regressions from "non-root" regressions, but even the upper bound of 15 affected crates seems relatively minimal.

This is especially annoying when a Google search drops you into the documentation of the struct, when you really wanted to get to the method of the same name.

0a9c463195 Revert "PR #30130 Implement Clone for more arrays"
This reverts commit e22a64e8d8.

This caused a regression such that types like `[[u8; 256]; 4]`
no longer implemented Clone. This previously worked due to Clone
for `[T; N]` (N in 0 to 32) being implemented for T: Copy.

Due to fixed size arrays not implementing Clone for sizes above 32,
the new implementation requiring T: Clone would not allow
`[[u8; 256]; 4]` to be Clone.

What this patch does:
- Stability annotations are now based on "exported items" supplied by rustc_privacy and not "public items". Exported items are as accessible for external crates as directly public items and should be annotated with stability attributes.
- Trait impls require annotations now.
- Reexports require annotations now.
- Crates themselves didn't require annotations, now they do.
- Exported macros are annotated now, but these annotations are not used yet.
- Some useless annotations are detected and result in errors
- Finally, some small bugs are fixed - deprecation propagates from stable deprecated parents, items in blocks are traversed correctly (fixes https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/29034) + some code cleanup.

`format_args!` doesn't support none Sized types so we should just pass it the references to `left_val` and `right_val`.

The following works:
```rust
assert!([1, 2, 3][..] == vec![1, 2, 3][..])
```
So I would expect this to as well:
```rust
assert_eq!([1, 2, 3][..], vec![1, 2, 3][..])
```
But it fails with "error: the trait `core::marker::Sized` is not implemented for the type `[_]` [E0277]"
I don't know if this change will have any nasty side effects I don't understand.
