2692ae1ddd auto merge of #15619 : kwantam/rust/master, r=huonw
- `width()` computes the displayed width of a string, ignoring the width of control characters.
    - arguably we might do *something* else for control characters, but the question is, what?
    - users who want to do something else can iterate over chars()

- `graphemes()` returns a `Graphemes` struct, which implements an iterator over the grapheme clusters of a &str.
    - fully compliant with [UAX#29](http://www.unicode.org/reports/tr29/#Grapheme_Cluster_Boundaries)
    - passes all [Unicode-supplied tests](http://www.unicode.org/reports/tr41/tr41-15.html#Tests29)

- added code to generate additionial categories in `unicode.py`
    - `Cn` aka `Not_Assigned`
    - categories necessary for grapheme cluster breaking

- tidied up the exports from libunicode
  - all exports are exposed through a module rather than directly at crate root.
  - std::prelude imports UnicodeChar and UnicodeStrSlice from std::char and std::str rather than directly from libunicode

cf432b8f8f add Graphemes iterator; tidy unicode exports
- Graphemes and GraphemeIndices structs implement iterators over
  grapheme clusters analogous to the Chars and CharOffsets for chars in
  a string. Iterator and DoubleEndedIterator are available for both.

- tidied up the exports for libunicode. crate root exports are now moved
  into more appropriate module locations:
  - UnicodeStrSlice, Words, Graphemes, GraphemeIndices are in str module
  - UnicodeChar exported from char instead of crate root
  - canonical_combining_class is exported from str rather than crate root

Since libunicode's exports have changed, programs that previously relied
on the old export locations will need to change their `use` statements
to reflect the new ones. See above for more information on where the new
exports live.

This PR is the outcome of the library stabilization meeting for the

Aside from the stability attributes, there are a few breaking changes:

* The `owned` modules is now named `boxed`, to better represent its
  contents. (`box` was unavailable, since it's a keyword.) This will
  help avoid the misconception that `Box` plays a special role wrt
  ownership.

* The `AnyOwnExt` extension trait is renamed to `BoxAny`, and its `move`

llvm is currently not able to conver `Vec::extend` into a memcpy for `Copy` types, which results in methods like `Vec::push_all` to run twice as slow as it should be running. This patch takes the unsafe `Vec::clone` optimization to speed up all the operations that are cloning a slice into a `Vec`.

Add libunicode; move unicode functions from core

- created new crate, libunicode, below libstd
- split `Char` trait into `Char` (libcore) and `UnicodeChar` (libunicode)
  - Unicode-aware functions now live in libunicode
    - `is_alphabetic`, `is_XID_start`, `is_XID_continue`, `is_lowercase`,
      `is_uppercase`, `is_whitespace`, `is_alphanumeric`, `is_control`, `is_digit`,
      `to_uppercase`, `to_lowercase`
  - added `width` method in UnicodeChar trait
    - determines printed width of character in columns, or None if it is a non-NULL control character
    - takes a boolean argument indicating whether the present context is CJK or not (characters with 'A'mbiguous widths are double-wide in CJK contexts, single-wide otherwise)
- split `StrSlice` into `StrSlice` (libcore) and `UnicodeStrSlice` (libunicode)
  - functionality formerly in `StrSlice` that relied upon Unicode functionality from `Char` is now in `UnicodeStrSlice`
    - `words`, `is_whitespace`, `is_alphanumeric`, `trim`, `trim_left`, `trim_right`
  - also moved `Words` type alias into libunicode because `words` method is in `UnicodeStrSlice`

85e2bee4a2 fix test failures
- unicode tests live in coretest crate
- libcollections str tests need UnicodeChar trait.
- libregex perlw tests were checking a char in the Alphabetic category,
  \x2161. Confirmed perl 5.18 considers this a \w character. Changed to
  \x2961, which is not \w as the test expects.

Removing recursion from TreeMap implementation, because we don't have TCO. No need to add ```O(logn)``` extra stack frames to search in a tree.

I find it curious that ```find_mut``` and ```find``` basically duplicated the same logic, but in different ways (iterative vs recursive), possibly to maneuvre around mutability rules, but that's a more fundamental issue to deal with elsewhere.

Thanks to acrichto for the magic trick to appease borrowck (another issue to deal with elsewhere).

7e4e99123a librustc (RFC #34): Implement the new Index and IndexMut traits.
This will break code that used the old `Index` trait. Change this code
to use the new `Index` traits. For reference, here are their signatures:

Removes the following methods from `Bitv`:

  - `to_vec`: translates a `Bitv` into a bulky `Vec<uint>` of 0's and 1's
    replace with:  `bitv.iter().map(|b| if b {1} else {0}).collect()`

  - `to_bools`: translates a `Bitv` into a `Vec<bool>`
    replace with: `bitv.iter().collect()`

  - `ones`: internal iterator over all 1 bits in a `Bitv`
    replace with: `BitvSet::from_bitv(bitv).iter().advance(fn)`

These methods had specific functionality which can be replicated more
generally by the modern iterator system. (Also `to_vec` was not even
unit tested!)

a698b81ebf collections::bitv: ensure correct masking behaviour
The internal masking behaviour for `Bitv` is now defined as:
  - Any entirely words in self.storage must be all zeroes.
  - Any partially used words may have anything at all in their
    unused bits.

This means:
  - When decreasing self.nbits, care must be taken that any
    no-longer-used words are zeroed out.

  - When increasing self.nbits, care must be taken that any
    newly-unmasked bits are set to their correct values.

  - When reading words, care should be taken that the values of
    unused bits are not used. (Preferably, use `Bitv::mask_words`
    which zeroes them out for you.)

The old behaviour was that every unused bit was always set to
zero. The problem with this is that unused bits are almost never
read, so forgetting to do this will result in very subtle and
hard-to-track down bugs. This way the responsibility for masking
falls on the places which might cause unused bits to be read: for
now, this is only `Bitv::mask_words` and `BitvSet::insert`.

2d23319e33 collections::bitv: Remove SmallBitv/BigBitv dichotomy
The old `Bitv` structure had two variations: one represented by a vector of
uints, and another represented by a single uint for bit vectors containing
fewer than uint::BITS bits.

The purpose of this is to avoid the indirection of using a Vec, but the
speedup is only available to users who

  (a) are storing less than uints::BITS bits
  (b) know this when they create the vector (since `Bitv`s cannot be resized)
  (c) don't know this at compile time (else they could use uint directly)

Giving such specific users a (questionable) speed benefit at the cost of
adding explicit checks to almost every single bit call, frequently writing
the same method twice and making iteration much much more difficult, does
not seem like a worthwhile tradeoff to me.

Also, rustc does not use Bitv anywhere, only through BitvSet, which does
not have this optimization.

For reference, here is some speed data from before and after this PR:

The bug #11084 causes `option::collect` and `result::collect` about twice as slower as it should because llvm is having some trouble optimizing away the scan closure. This gets rid of it so now those functions perform equivalent to a hand written version.

This also adds an impl of `Default` for `Rc` along the way.

Generally speaking, inlining doesn't really help out with
constructing vectors, except for when we construct a zero-sized
vector. This patch allows llvm to optimize this case away in

Replace its usage with byte string literals, except in `bytes!()` tests.
Also add a new snapshot, to be able to use the new b"foo" syntax.

The src/etc/2014-06-rewrite-bytes-macros.py script automatically
rewrites `bytes!()` invocations into byte string literals.
Pass it filenames as arguments to generate a diff that you can inspect,
or `--apply` followed by filenames to apply the changes in place.
Diffs can be piped into `tip` or `pygmentize -l diff` for coloring.

All users of ~[T] should move to using Vec<T> instead.

This commit is the final step in the libstd facade, #13851. The purpose of this
commit is to move libsync underneath the standard library, behind the facade.
This will allow core primitives like channels, queues, and atomics to all live
in the same location.

There were a few notable changes and a few breaking changes as part of this
movement:

* The `Vec` and `String` types are reexported at the top level of libcollections
* The `unreachable!()` macro was copied to libcore
* The `std::rt::thread` module was moved to librustrt, but it is still
  reexported at the same location.
* The `std::comm` module was moved to libsync
* The `sync::comm` module was moved under `sync::comm`, and renamed to `duplex`.
  It is now a private module with types/functions being reexported under
  `sync::comm`. This is a breaking change for any existing users of duplex
  streams.
* All concurrent queues/deques were moved directly under libsync. They are also
  all marked with #![experimental] for now if they are public.
* The `task_pool` and `future` modules no longer live in libsync, but rather
  live under `std::sync`. They will forever live at this location, but they may
  move to libsync if the `std::task` module moves as well.

531ed3d599 rustc: Update how Gc<T> is recognized
This commit uses the same trick as ~/Box to map Gc<T> to @T internally inside
the compiler. This moves a number of implementations of traits to the `gc`
module in the standard library.

This removes functions such as `Gc::new`, `Gc::borrow`, and `Gc::ptr_eq` in
favor of the more modern equivalents, `box(GC)`, `Deref`, and pointer equality.

The Gc pointer itself should be much more useful now, and subsequent commits
will move the compiler away from @T towards Gc<T>

da0703973a core: Move the collections traits to libcollections
This commit moves Mutable, Map, MutableMap, Set, and MutableSet from
`core::collections` to the `collections` crate at the top-level. Additionally,
this removes the `deque` module and moves the `Deque` trait to only being
available at the top-level of the collections crate.

All functionality continues to be reexported through `std::collections`.

e5bbbca33e rustdoc: Submit examples to play.rust-lang.org
This grows a new option inside of rustdoc to add the ability to submit examples
to an external website. If the `--markdown-playground-url` command line option
or crate doc attribute `html_playground_url` is present, then examples will have
a button on hover to submit the code to the playground specified.

This commit enables submission of example code to play.rust-lang.org. The code
submitted is that which is tested by rustdoc, not necessarily the exact code
shown in the example.

This commit carries out the request from issue #14678:

> The method `Iterator::len()` is surprising, as all the other uses of

6a585375a0 std: Recreate a collections module
As with the previous commit with `librand`, this commit shuffles around some
`collections` code. The new state of the world is similar to that of librand:

* The libcollections crate now only depends on libcore and liballoc.
* The standard library has a new module, `std::collections`. All functionality
  of libcollections is reexported through this module.

I would like to stress that this change is purely cosmetic. There are very few
alterations to these primitives.

There are a number of notable points about the new organization:

* std::{str, slice, string, vec} all moved to libcollections. There is no reason
  that these primitives shouldn't be necessarily usable in a freestanding
  context that has allocation. These are all reexported in their usual places in
  the standard library.

* The `hashmap`, and transitively the `lru_cache`, modules no longer reside in
  `libcollections`, but rather in libstd. The reason for this is because the
  `HashMap::new` contructor requires access to the OSRng for initially seeding
  the hash map. Beyond this requirement, there is no reason that the hashmap
  could not move to libcollections.

  I do, however, have a plan to move the hash map to the collections module. The
  `HashMap::new` function could be altered to require that the `H` hasher
  parameter ascribe to the `Default` trait, allowing the entire `hashmap` module
  to live in libcollections. The key idea would be that the default hasher would
  be different in libstd. Something along the lines of:

      // src/libstd/collections/mod.rs

      pub type HashMap<K, V, H = RandomizedSipHasher> =
            core_collections::HashMap<K, V, H>;

  This is not possible today because you cannot invoke static methods through
  type aliases. If we modified the compiler, however, to allow invocation of
  static methods through type aliases, then this type definition would
  essentially be switching the default hasher from `SipHasher` in libcollections
  to a libstd-defined `RandomizedSipHasher` type. This type's `Default`
  implementation would randomly seed the `SipHasher` instance, and otherwise
  perform the same as `SipHasher`.

  This future state doesn't seem incredibly far off, but until that time comes,
  the hashmap module will live in libstd to not compromise on functionality.

* In preparation for the hashmap moving to libcollections, the `hash` module has
  moved from libstd to libcollections. A previously snapshotted commit enables a
  distinct `Writer` trait to live in the `hash` module which `Hash`
  implementations are now parameterized over.

  Due to using a custom trait, the `SipHasher` implementation has lost its
  specialized methods for writing integers. These can be re-added
  backwards-compatibly in the future via default methods if necessary, but the
  FNV hashing should satisfy much of the need for speedier hashing.

A list of breaking changes:

* HashMap::{get, get_mut} no longer fails with the key formatted into the error
  message with `{:?}`, instead, a generic message is printed. With backtraces,
  it should still be not-too-hard to track down errors.

* The HashMap, HashSet, and LruCache types are now available through
  std::collections instead of the collections crate.

* Manual implementations of hash should be parameterized over `hash::Writer`
  instead of just `Writer`.

The size of `HashMap<K, V>` is now 64 bytes by default on a 64-bit platform (or at least 40 bytes, that is 3 words less, with FNV and without minimum capacity)

Unanswered questions about `ResizePolicy`

* should it control the `INITIAL_CAPACITY`?
* should it fully control the resizing behavior? Even though the capacity always changes by a factor of 2.
* is caching `grow_at` desirable?

9b228f8424 core: Apply stability attributes to ptr mod
* null and mut_null are unstable. Their names may change if the unsafe
  pointer types change.
* copy_memory and copy_overlapping_memory are unstable. We think they
  aren't going to change.
* set_memory and zero_memory are experimental. Both the names and
  the semantics are under question.
* swap and replace are unstable and probably won't change.
* read is unstable, probably won't change
* read_and_zero is experimental. It's necessity is in doubt.
* mem::overwrite is now called ptr::write to match read and is
  unstable. mem::overwrite is now deprecated
* array_each, array_each_with_len, buf_len, and position are
  all deprecated because they use old style iteration and their
  utility is generally under question.

2202b104d4 collections: optimize HashMap. Add DefaultResizePolicy.

bba701c59d std: Drop Total from Total{Eq,Ord}
This completes the last stage of the renaming of the comparison hierarchy of
traits. This change renames TotalEq to Eq and TotalOrd to Ord.

In the future the new Eq/Ord will be filled out with their appropriate methods,
but for now this change is purely a renaming change.

This is part of the ongoing renaming of the equality traits. See #12517 for more

925ff65118 std: Recreate a rand module
This commit shuffles around some of the `rand` code, along with some
reorganization. The new state of the world is as follows:

* The librand crate now only depends on libcore. This interface is experimental.
* The standard library has a new module, `std::rand`. This interface will
  eventually become stable.

Unfortunately, this entailed more of a breaking change than just shuffling some
names around. The following breaking changes were made to the rand library:

* Rng::gen_vec() was removed. This has been replaced with Rng::gen_iter() which
  will return an infinite stream of random values. Previous behavior can be
  regained with `rng.gen_iter().take(n).collect()`

* Rng::gen_ascii_str() was removed. This has been replaced with
  Rng::gen_ascii_chars() which will return an infinite stream of random ascii
  characters. Similarly to gen_iter(), previous behavior can be emulated with
  `rng.gen_ascii_chars().take(n).collect()`

* {IsaacRng, Isaac64Rng, XorShiftRng}::new() have all been removed. These all
  relied on being able to use an OSRng for seeding, but this is no longer
  available in librand (where these types are defined). To retain the same
  functionality, these types now implement the `Rand` trait so they can be
  generated with a random seed from another random number generator. This allows
  the stdlib to use an OSRng to create seeded instances of these RNGs.

* Rand implementations for `Box<T>` and `@T` were removed. These seemed to be
  pretty rare in the codebase, and it allows for librand to not depend on
  liballoc.  Additionally, other pointer types like Rc<T> and Arc<T> were not
  supported.  If this is undesirable, librand can depend on liballoc and regain
  these implementations.

* The WeightedChoice structure is no longer built with a `Vec<Weighted<T>>`,
  but rather a `&mut [Weighted<T>]`. This means that the WeightedChoice
  structure now has a lifetime associated with it.

* The `sample` method on `Rng` has been moved to a top-level function in the
  `rand` module due to its dependence on `Vec`.

b53454e2e4 Move std::{reflect,repr,Poly} to a libdebug crate
This commit moves reflection (as well as the {:?} format modifier) to a new
libdebug crate, all of which is marked experimental.

This is a breaking change because it now requires the debug crate to be
explicitly linked if the :? format qualifier is used. This means that any code
using this feature will have to add `extern crate debug;` to the top of the
crate. Any code relying on reflection will also need to do this.
