Minimally fixes #7017, we were overwriting the result and thus ignoring attributes before the last.

csearch::get_item_attrs and decoder::get_item_attrs should probably also be changed to each_item_attrs using the for protocol, but that's just a minor performance/style issue.

b51f44e21b Fix passing self by value for types passed by value
For types that are passed by value, we can't just cast the value to a
pointer, but have to use an alloca and copy the value there. This
handling is already present for all other arguments, but was missing
for "self".

c120464be0 rustc/rusti/rustpkg: Infer packages from extern mod directives
This commit won't be quite as useful until I implement RUST_PATH and
until we change `extern mod` to take a general string instead of
an identifier (#5682 and #6407).

With that said, now if you're using rustpkg and a program contains:

extern mod foo;

rustpkg will attempt to search for `foo`, so that you don't have to
provide a -L directory explicitly. In addition, rustpkg will
actually try to build and install `foo`, unless it's already
installed (specifically, I tested that `extern mod extra;` would
not cause it to try to find source for `extra` and compile it
again).

This is as per #5681.

Incidentally, I changed some driver code to infer the link name
from the crate link_meta attributes. If that change isn't ok, say
something. Also, I changed the addl_lib_search_paths field in the
session options to be an @mut ~[Path] so that it can be modified
after expansion but before later phases.

The `callee_id` in `ast::expr` in only used in a couple expression variants. This moves the `callee_id` into those branches to make it more clear when its should be used.

Also, it fixes a bug in a std::run test when there is a symlink in the path rust where was checked out.

24e85ac82d auto merge of #6880 : thomaslee/rust/issue-6745, r=catamorphism
This fixes #6745, which itself relates to #4202. Slightly ham-fisted -- feel particularly funny about using the typeck phase to gather the base -> impl mapping, and the separate code paths for traits vs. "real" bases feels like it could be avoided -- but it seems to work.

As always, open to suggestions if there's a better way to accomplish what I'm trying to do.

Move the computation of what data is moved out of `liveness` and into `borrowck`. The resulting code is cleaner, since before we had a split distribution of responsibilities, and also this avoids having multiple implementations of the dataflow code. Liveness is still used to report warnings about useless writes. This will go away when we get the control-flow graph code landed (working on that).

Also adds borrow checker documentation.

Fixes #4384.
Required to support once fns and to properly fix closures (#2202).
First step to generalize our treatment of moves somewhat as well.

Fix for #6575. In the trans phase, rustc emits code for a function parameter that goes completely unused in the event the return type of the function in question happens to be an immediate.

This patch modifies rustc & parts of rustrt to ensure that the vestigial parameter is no longer present in compiled code.

b738b5766e auto merge of #6754 : thestinger/rust/noalias, r=nikomatsakis
The compiler guarantees that there are no other references to a unique pointer when it's passed by-value to a function.

The existence of the header and annihilator don't matter since it's not relevant to the call:

> For a call to the parent function, dependencies between memory references from before or after the call and from those during the call are “irrelevant” to the noalias keyword for the arguments and return value used in that call.

@graydon's tracing garbage collector stores the metadata outside of the boxes, so that won't be a problem. I'm unsure if updating the header while inside a function where it's marked as `noalias` would be a problem anyway since you never actually read or write to the header.

Passing higher alignment values gives the optimization passes more freedom since it can copy in larger chunks. This change results in rustc outputting the same post-optimization IR as clang for swaps and most copies excluding the lack of information about padding.

Code snippet:

```rust
#[inline(never)]
fn swap<T>(x: &mut T, y: &mut T) {
    util::swap(x, y);
}
```

Original IR (for `int`):

```llvm
define internal fastcc void @_ZN9swap_283417_a71830ca3ed2d65d3_00E(i64*, i64*) #1 {
static_allocas:
  %2 = icmp eq i64* %0, %1
  br i1 %2, label %_ZN4util9swap_283717_a71830ca3ed2d65d3_00E.exit, label %3
; <label>:3                                       ; preds = %static_allocas
  %4 = load i64* %0, align 1
  %5 = load i64* %1, align 1
  store i64 %5, i64* %0, align 1
  store i64 %4, i64* %1, align 1
  br label %_ZN4util9swap_283717_a71830ca3ed2d65d3_00E.exit
_ZN4util9swap_283717_a71830ca3ed2d65d3_00E.exit:  ; preds = %3, %static_allocas
  ret void
}
```

After #6710:

```llvm
define internal fastcc void @_ZN9swap_283017_a71830ca3ed2d65d3_00E(i64* nocapture, i64* nocapture) #1 {
static_allocas:
  %2 = load i64* %0, align 1
  %3 = load i64* %1, align 1
  store i64 %3, i64* %0, align 1
  store i64 %2, i64* %1, align 1
  ret void
}
```

After this change:

```llvm
define internal fastcc void @_ZN9swap_283017_a71830ca3ed2d65d3_00E(i64* nocapture, i64* nocapture) #1 {
static_allocas:
  %2 = load i64* %0, align 8
  %3 = load i64* %1, align 8
  store i64 %3, i64* %0, align 8
  store i64 %2, i64* %1, align 8
  ret void
}
```

Another example:

```rust
#[inline(never)]
fn set<T>(x: &mut T, y: T) {
    *x = y;
}
```

Before, with `(int, int)` (align 1):

```llvm
define internal fastcc void @_ZN8set_282517_8fa972e3f9e451983_00E({ i64, i64 }* nocapture, { i64, i64 }* nocapture) #1 {
static_allocas:
  %2 = bitcast { i64, i64 }* %1 to i8*
  %3 = bitcast { i64, i64 }* %0 to i8*
  tail call void @llvm.memcpy.p0i8.p0i8.i64(i8* %3, i8* %2, i64 16, i32 1, i1 false)
  ret void
}
```

After, with `(int, int)` (align 8):

```llvm
define internal fastcc void @_ZN8set_282617_8fa972e3f9e451983_00E({ i64, i64 }* nocapture, { i64, i64 }* nocapture) #1 {
static_allocas:
  %2 = bitcast { i64, i64 }* %1 to i8*
  %3 = bitcast { i64, i64 }* %0 to i8*
  tail call void @llvm.memcpy.p0i8.p0i8.i64(i8* %3, i8* %2, i64 16, i32 8, i1 false)
  ret void
}
Fixes https://github.com/mozilla/rust/issues/6578 by merging the 3 different ways to build an AST into a single `AstBuilder` trait, creating a more uniform and briefer interface.
Also, converts the `ext_ctxt` trait-object to be a plain struct, as well as renaming it to `ExtCtxt`.
Seems to make expansion slightly faster for the normal case (e.g. `libcore` and `libstd`), but slower for `librustc` (slightly) and `libsyntax` (0.3s -> 0.8s! I'm investigating this, but I'd prefer this patch to land relatively quickly.).
`git blame` suggests maybe @graydon or @erickt are familiar with this area of the code. r?
This adds a lint mode for detecting unnecessary allocations on the heap. This isn't super fancy, currently it only has two rules
1. For a function's arguments, if you allocate a `[~|@]str` literal, when the type of the argument is a `&str`, emit a warning.
2. For the same case, emit warnings for boxed vectors when slices are required.
After adding the lint, I rampaged through the libraries and removed all the unnecessary allocations I could find.
This way it's much easier to add lints throughout compilation correctly, and
functions on impls can alter the way lints are emitted. This involved pretty much rewriting how lints are emitted. Beforehand, only items could alter the lint settings, so whenever a lint was added it had to be associated with whatever item id it was coming from. I removed this (possibly questionably) in favor of just specifying a span and a message when adding a lint. When lint checking comes around, it looks at all the lints and sees which node with attributes best encloses it and uses that level of linting. This means that all consumer code doesn't have to deal with what item things came from (especially because functions on impls aren't items). More details of this can be found in the code (and comments).
As a bonus, I managed to greatly simplify emission of lints in resolve.rs about unused imports. Now instead of it manually tracking what the lint level is, it's all moved over into the lint module (as is to be expected).
r? @nikomatsakis In #6319, several people mentioned they ran into a "computing
fictitious type" ICE in trans. This turns out to be because some
of my recent changes to typeck::check::_match resulted in type errors
getting reported with ty_err as the expected type, which meant the errors
were suppressed, and typechecking incorrectly succeeded (since the errors
weren't recorded).
Changed the error messages in these cases not to use an expected type at all,
rather, printing out a string describing the type that was expected (which is
what the code originally did). The result is a bit repetitive and the
proliferation of error-reporting functions in typeck::infer is a bit annoying,
but I thought it was important to fix this now; more cleanup can happen later.
I don't know how to fix this, I experimented with some things to try to make let patterns and match patterns run on the same code (since this would presumably fix many of the other unsoundness issues of let-patterns, e.g. #6225), but I don't understand enough of the code. This fixes the issue described in #4202.
From what I understood of the code, when we reexport a trait in a submodule using e.g. "pub use foo::SomeTrait", we were not previously making an effort to reexport the static methods on that trait.
I'm new to the Rust code base (and the Rust language itself) so my approach may not be kosher, but this patch works by changing the encoder to include the static methods associated with traits.
I couldn't see any tests for this area of the code, so I didn't really have any examples to go by. If tests are needed, I'm happy to work through that if I can get some assistance to do so.
The biggest fallout was the `IterBytes` trait, although it's really a whole lot nicer now because all of the `iter_bytes_XX` methods are just and-ed together. Sadly there was a huge amount of stuff that's `cfg(stage0)` gated, but whoever lands the next snapshot is going to have a lot of fun deleting all this code!
Fix #6355 and #6272---we were not giving the correct index to the derefs that occur as part of the rooting process, resulting in extra copies and generally bogus behavior. Haven't quite produced the right test for this, but I thought I'd push the fix in the meantime. Test will follow shortly.
r? @pcwalton
Sorry this is so big, and sorry the first commit is just titled 'wip'.
Some interesting bits
* [LocalServices](f9069baa70) - This is the set of runtime capabilities that *all* Rust code should expect access to, including the local heap, GC, logging, unwinding.
* [impl Reader, etc. for Option](5fbb0949a5) - Constructors like `File::open` return Option<FileStream>. This lets you write I/O code without ever unwrapping an option.
This series adds a lot of [documentation](https://github.com/brson/rust/blob/io/src/libcore/rt/io/mod.rs#L11) to `core::rt::io`.
db6a62c537 rustc: Drop the visitor object from the visitor glue
Recent demoding makes the visitor glue leak. It hasn't shown up in tests
because the box annihilator deletes the leaked boxes. This affects the
new scheduler though which does not yet have a box annihilator.
I don't think there's any great way to test this besides setting up
a task that doesn't run the box annihilator and I don't know that that's
a capability we want tasks to have.
55fbc47af1 auto merge of #6148 : erickt/rust/remove-drop, r=pcwalton
The drop block has been deprecated for quite some time. This patch series removes support for parsing it and all the related machinery that made drop work.
As a side feature of all this, I also added the ability to annote fields in structs. This allows comments to be properly associated with an individual field. However, I didn't update `rustdoc` to integrate these comment blocks into the documentation it generates.
After much discussion on IRC and #4819, we have decided to revert to the old naming of the `/` operator. This does not change its behavior. In making this change, we also have had to rename some of the methods in the `Integer` trait. Here is a list of the methods that have changed:
- `Quot::quot` -> `Div::div`
- `Rem::rem` - stays the same
- `Integer::quot_rem` -> `Integer::div_rem`
- `Integer::div` -> `Integer::div_floor`
- `Integer::modulo` -> `Integer::mod_floor`
- `Integer::div_mod` -> `Integer::div_mod_floor`
Adds two extra flags: `--linker` which takes extra flags to pass to the linker, can be used multiple times and `--print-link-args` which prints out linker arguments. Currently `--print-link-args` needs execution to get past translation to get the `LinkMeta` data.
I haven't done tests or updated any extra documentation yet, so this pull request is currently here for review.
A month's worth of parser cleanup here. Much of this is new comments and renaming. A number of these commits also remove unneeded code.  Probably the biggest refactor here is splitting "parse_item_or_view_item" into two functions; it turns out that the only overlap between items in foreign modules and items in regular modules was macros, so this refactor should make things substantially easier for future maintenance.
Closes #3083.
This takes a similar approach to #5797 where a set is present on the `tcx` of used mutable definitions. Everything is by default warned about, and analyses must explicitly add mutable definitions to this set so they're not warned about.
Most of this was pretty straightforward, although there was one caveat that I ran into when implementing it. Apparently when the old modes are used (or maybe `legacy_modes`, I'm not sure) some different code paths are taken to cause spurious warnings to be issued which shouldn't be issued. I'm not really sure how modes even worked, so I was having a lot of trouble tracking this down. I figured that because they're a legacy thing that I'd just de-mode the compiler so that the warnings wouldn't be a problem anymore (or at least for the compiler).
Other than that, the entire compiler compiles without warnings of unused mutable variables. To prevent bad warnings, #5965 should be landed (which in turn is waiting on #5963) before landing this. I figured I'd stick it out for review anyway though.
This adds debugging symbol generation for boxes, bare functions, vectors, and strings, along with a tests for boxes and vectors.
Note that gdb will see them as their actual compiled representation with the refcount, tydesc, etc. fields, so if `b` refers to box, `b->boxed` will refer to its value. Also, since you seem to use the [C struct hack](http://c-faq.com/struct/structhack.html) for dynamic vectors, you won't be able to print out the whole vector at once, only one element at a time by indexing specific elements.
This doesn't completely fix the x86 ABI for structs, but it does fix some cases. On linux, structs appear to be returned correctly now. On windows, structs are only returned by pointer when they are greater than 8 bytes. That scenario works now.
In the case where the struct is less than 8 bytes our generated code looks peculiar. When returning a pair of u16, C packs both variables into %eax to return them. Our generated code though expects to find one of the pair in %ax and the other in %dx. Similar for u8. I haven't looked into it yet.
There appears to also be struct passing problems on linux, where my `extern-pass-TwoU8s` and `extern-pass-TwoU16s` tests are failing.
(The reason for this is I was playing with using `syntax` to index code ([result so far](http://www.ug.it.usyd.edu.au/~hwil7821/rust-api/)) and it was getting some junk from the tests.)
I tracked this by adding all used unsafe blocks/functions to a set on the `tcx` passed around, and then when the lint pass comes around if an unsafe block/function isn't listed in that set, it's unused.
I also removed everything from the compiler that was unused, and up to stage2 is now compiling without any known unused unsafe blocks.
I chose `unused_unsafe` as the name of the lint attribute, but there may be a better name...
9b55d86e74 Prevent eval_const_expr_partial hides prior error in expr_cast arm.
This will help not to meet confusing errors.
In issue #5873, the error was "expected constant expr for vector length: Can't cast str to int".
It was originally "expected constant expr for vector length: Non-constant path in constant expr"
This patch make the original error to be printed.
3809a04bf7 auto merge of #5778 : jld/rust/reflect-abstract-enum, r=graydon
This takes care of one of the last remnants of assumptions about enum layout.  A type visitor is now passed a function to read a value's discriminant, then accesses fields by being passed a byte offset for each one.  The latter may not be fully general, despite the constraints imposed on representations by borrowed pointers, but works for any representations currently planned and is relatively simple.
Closes #5652.
63e2724cdb auto merge of #5809 : Aatch/rust/start-attr, r=thestinger
This implements #5158. Currently it takes the command line args and the crate map. Since it doesn't take a `main` function pointer, you can't actually start the runtime easily, but that seems to be a shim to allow the current `rust_start` function to call into main.
However, you can do an end-run round the io library and do this:
```rust
use core::libc::{write, c_int, c_void, size_t, STDOUT_FILENO};

#[start]
fn my_start(_argc:int, _argv: **u8, _crate_map: *u8) -> int {
    do str::as_buf("Hello World!\n") |s,len| {
        unsafe {
            write(STDOUT_FILENO, s as *c_void, len as size_t);
        }
    }
    return 0;
}
```
Which is the most basic "Hello World" you can do in rust without starting up the runtime (though that has quite a lot to do with the fact that `core::io` uses `@` everywhere...)
Good morning,
This first patch series adds support for `#[deriving(Decodable, Encodable)]`, but does not yet remove `#[auto_encode]` and `#[auto_decode]`. I need a snapshot to remove the old code. Along the way it also extends support for tuple structs and struct enum variants.
Also, it includes a minor fix to the pretty printer. We decided a while ago to use 4 spaces to indent a match arm instead of 2. This updates the pretty printer to reflect that.
Revert map.each to something which takes two parameters rather than a tuple.  The current setup iterates over `BaseIter<(&'self K, &'self V)>` where 'self is a lifetime declared *in the `each()` method*.  You can't place such a type in the impl declaration.  The compiler currently allows it, but this will not be legal under #5656 and I'm pretty sure it's not sound now.  It's too bad that maps can't implement `BaseIter` (at least not over a tuple as they do here) but I think it has to be this way for the time being.
3322595e89 Reason about nested free variables that appear in a function
signature.  In a nutshell, the idea is to (1) report an error if, for
a region pointer `'a T`, the lifetime `'a` is longer than any
lifetimes that appear in `T` (in other words, if a borrowed pointer
outlives any portion of its contents) and then (2) use this to assume
that in a function like `fn(self: &'a &'b T)`, the relationship `'a <=
'b` holds. This is needed for #5656.  Fixes #5728.
This leaves the default lint modes at `warn`, but now the unused variable and dead assignment warnings are configurable on a per-item basis. As described in #3266, this just involved carrying around a couple ids to pass over to `span_lint`. I personally would prefer to keep the `_` prefix as well.
This closes #3266.
92e265cdea auto merge of #5802 : nikomatsakis/rust/issue-4183-trait-substs, r=nikomatsakis
Cleanup substitutions and treatment of generics around traits in a number of ways
- In a TraitRef, use the self type consistently to refer to the Self type:
  - trait ref in `impl Trait<A,B,C> for S` has a self type of `S`.
  - trait ref in `A:Trait` has the self type `A`
  - trait ref associated with a trait decl has self type `Self`
  - trait ref associated with a supertype has self type `Self`
  - trait ref in an object type `@Trait` has no self type
- Rewrite `each_bound_traits_and_supertraits` to perform
  substitutions as it goes, and thus yield a series of trait refs
  that are always in the same 'namespace' as the type parameter
  bound given as input.  Before, we left this to the caller, but
  this doesn't work because the caller lacks adequare information
  to perform the type substitutions correctly.
- For provided methods, substitute the generics involved in the provided
  method correctly.
- Introduce TypeParameterDef, which tracks the bounds declared on a type
  parameter and brings them together with the def_id and (in the future)
  other information (maybe even the parameter's name!).
- Introduce Subst trait, which helps to cleanup a lot of the
  repetitive code involved with doing type substitution.
- Introduce Repr trait, which makes debug printouts far more convenient.
Fixes #4183.  Needed for #5656.
