6efd16629c rustc: Add official support for weak failure
This commit is part of the ongoing libstd facade efforts (cc #13851). The
compiler now recognizes some language items as "extern { fn foo(...); }" and
will automatically perform the following actions:

1. The foreign function has a pre-defined name.
2. The crate and downstream crates can only be built as rlibs until a crate
   defines the lang item itself.
3. The actual lang item has a pre-defined name.

This is essentially nicer compiler support for the hokey
core-depends-on-std-failure scheme today, but it is implemented the same way.
The details are a little more hidden under the covers.

In addition to failure, this commit promotes the eh_personality and
rust_stack_exhausted functions to official lang items. The compiler can generate
calls to these functions, causing linkage errors if they are left undefined. The
checking for these items is not as precise as it could be. Crates compiling with
`-Z no-landing-pads` will not need the eh_personality lang item, and crates
compiling with no split stacks won't need the stack exhausted lang item. For
ease, however, these items are checked for presence in all final outputs of the
compiler.

It is quite easy to define dummy versions of the functions necessary:

    #[lang = "stack_exhausted"]
    extern fn stack_exhausted() { /* ... */ }

    #[lang = "eh_personality"]
    extern fn eh_personality() { /* ... */ }

cc #11922, rust_stack_exhausted is now a lang item
cc #13851, libcollections is blocked on eh_personality becoming weak

eb6856c307 Fixing rustdoc stage1.
See #13983 and #14000.

Fix was originally authored by alexcrichton and then rebased a couple
times by pnkfelix, most recently atop PR 13954.

----

Regarding the change to librustdoc/lib.rs, to do `map_err` before
unwrapping a `TqskResult`: I do not understand how master is passing
without this change or something like it, since `Box<Any:Send>` does
not implement `Show`. (Is this something that is only a problem for
the snapshot stage0 compiler?) Still, the change I have put in here
(which was added as part of a rebase after alex's review) seems
harmless to me to apply to rustdoc at all stages, since a call to
`unwrap` is just going to `fail!` on the err case anyway.

1de4b65d2a Updates with core::fmt changes
1. Wherever the `buf` field of a `Formatter` was used, the `Formatter` is used
   instead.
2. The usage of `write_fmt` is minimized as much as possible, the `write!` macro
   is preferred wherever possible.
3. Usage of `fmt::write` is minimized, favoring the `write!` macro instead.

e031ba1028 auto merge of #14096 : nick29581/rust/driver, r=brson
The goal of this refactoring is to make the rustc driver code easier to understand and use. Since this is as close to an API as we have, I think it is important that it is nice. On getting stuck in, I found that there wasn't as much to change as I'd hoped to make the stage... functions easier to use by tools (which is a good thing :-) ).

This patch only moves code around - mostly just moving code to different files, but a few extracted method refactorings too. To summarise the changes: I added driver::config which handles everything about configuring the compiler. driver::session now just defines and builds session objects. I moved driver code from librustc/lib.rs to librustc/driver/mod.rs so all the code is one place. I extracted methods to make emulating the compiler without being the compiler a little easier. Within the driver directory, I moved code around to more logically fit in the modules.

f94d671bfa core: Remove the cast module
This commit revisits the `cast` module in libcore and libstd, and scrutinizes
all functions inside of it. The result was to remove the `cast` module entirely,
folding all functionality into the `mem` module. Specifically, this is the fate
of each function in the `cast` module.

* transmute - This function was moved to `mem`, but it is now marked as
              #[unstable]. This is due to planned changes to the `transmute`
              function and how it can be invoked (see the #[unstable] comment).
              For more information, see RFC 5 and #12898

* transmute_copy - This function was moved to `mem`, with clarification that is
                   is not an error to invoke it with T/U that are different
                   sizes, but rather that it is strongly discouraged. This
                   function is now #[stable]

* forget - This function was moved to `mem` and marked #[stable]

* bump_box_refcount - This function was removed due to the deprecation of
                      managed boxes as well as its questionable utility.

* transmute_mut - This function was previously deprecated, and removed as part
                  of this commit.

* transmute_mut_unsafe - This function doesn't serve much of a purpose when it
                         can be achieved with an `as` in safe code, so it was
                         removed.

* transmute_lifetime - This function was removed because it is likely a strong
                       indication that code is incorrect in the first place.

* transmute_mut_lifetime - This function was removed for the same reasons as
                           `transmute_lifetime`

* copy_lifetime - This function was moved to `mem`, but it is marked
                  `#[unstable]` now due to the likelihood of being removed in
                  the future if it is found to not be very useful.

* copy_mut_lifetime - This function was also moved to `mem`, but had the same
                      treatment as `copy_lifetime`.

* copy_lifetime_vec - This function was removed because it is not used today,
                      and its existence is not necessary with DST
                      (copy_lifetime will suffice).

In summary, the cast module was stripped down to these functions, and then the
functions were moved to the `mem` module.

    transmute - #[unstable]
    transmute_copy - #[stable]
    forget - #[stable]
    copy_lifetime - #[unstable]
    copy_mut_lifetime - #[unstable]

c217a84479 auto merge of #14005 : alexcrichton/rust/extern-unsafe, r=pcwalton
Previously, the parser would not allow you to simultaneously implement a
function with a different abi as well as being unsafe at the same time. This
extends the parser to allow functions of the form:

    unsafe extern fn foo() {
        // ...
    }

The closure type grammar was also changed to reflect this reversal, types
previously written as "extern unsafe fn()" must now be written as
"unsafe extern fn()". The parser currently has a hack which allows the old
style, but this will go away once a snapshot has landed.

Note that `~self` still remains, since I forgot to add support for

How to update your code:

* Instead of `~EXPR`, you should write `box EXPR`.

* Instead of `~TYPE`, you should write `Box<Type>`.

* Instead of `~PATTERN`, you should write `box PATTERN`.

24f6f26e63 auto merge of #13892 : alexcrichton/rust/mixing-rlib-dylib-deps, r=brson
Currently, rustc requires that a linkage be a product of 100% rlibs or 100%
dylibs. This is to satisfy the requirement that each object appear at most once
in the final output products. This is a bit limiting, and the upcoming libcore
library cannot exist as a dylib, so these rules must change.

The goal of this commit is to enable *some* use cases for mixing rlibs and
dylibs, primarily libcore's use case. It is not targeted at allowing an
exhaustive number of linkage flavors.

There is a new dependency_format module in rustc which calculates what format
each upstream library should be linked as in each output type of the current
unit of compilation. The module itself contains many gory details about what's
going on here.

f77784b57f auto merge of #13857 : alexcrichton/rust/add-dylib-paths, r=brson
When a syntax extension is loaded by the compiler, the dylib that is opened may
have other dylibs that it depends on. The dynamic linker must be able to find
these libraries on the system or else the library will fail to load.

Currently, unix gets by with the use of rpaths. This relies on the dylib not
moving around too drastically relative to its dependencies. For windows,
however, this is no rpath available, and in theory unix should work without
rpaths as well.

This modifies the compiler to add all -L search directories to the dynamic
linker's set of load paths. This is currently managed through environment
variables for each platform.

This allows the use of syntax extensions when cross-compiling (fixing #12102). It does this by encoding the target triple in the crate metadata and checking it when searching for files. Currently the crate triple must match the host triple when there is a macro_registrar_fn, it must match the target triple when linking, and can match either when only macro_rules! macros are used.

due to carelessness, this is pretty much a duplicate of https://github.com/mozilla/rust/pull/13450.

6beb376b5c auto merge of #13686 : alexcrichton/rust/issue-12224, r=nikomatsakis
This alters the borrow checker's requirements on invoking closures from
requiring an immutable borrow to requiring a unique immutable borrow. This means
that it is illegal to invoke a closure through a `&` pointer because there is no
guarantee that is not aliased. This does not mean that a closure is required to
be in a mutable location, but rather a location which can be proven to be
unique (often through a mutable pointer).

For example, the following code is unsound and is no longer allowed:

        f(|| {

            a();
        });
    }

There is no replacement for this pattern. For all closures which are stored in
structures, it was previously allowed to invoke the closure through `&self` but
it now requires invocation through `&mut self`.

The standard library has a good number of violations of this new rule, but the
fixes will be separated into multiple breaking change commits.

Refactors all uses of ty_vec and associated things to remove the vstore abstraction (still used for strings, for now). Pointers to vectors are stored as ty_rptr or ty_uniq wrapped around a ty_vec. There are no user-facing changes. Existing behaviour is preserved by special-casing many instances of pointers containing vectors. Hopefully with DST most of these hacks will go away. For now it is useful to leave them hanging around rather than abstracting them into a method or something.

Closes #13554.

3f2c55f7d5 rustc: Use realpath() for sysroot/rpath
When calculating the sysroot, it's more accurate to use realpath() rather than
just one readlink() to account for any intermediate symlinks that the rustc
binary resolves itself to.

For rpath, realpath() is necessary because the rpath must dictate a relative
rpath from the destination back to the originally linked library, which works
more robustly if there are no symlinks involved.

Concretely, any binary generated on OSX into $TMPDIR requires an absolute rpath
because the temporary directory is behind a symlink with one layer of
indirection. This symlink causes all relative rpaths to fail to resolve.

5367c32c7d rustc: Never register syntax crates in CStore
When linking, all crates in the local CStore are used to link the final product.
With #[phase(syntax)], crates want to be omitted from this linkage phase, and
this was achieved by dumping the entire CStore after loading crates. This causes
crates like the standard library to get loaded twice. This loading process is a
fairly expensive operation when dealing with decompressing metadata.

This commit alters the loading process to never register syntax crates in
CStore. Instead, only phase(link) crates ever make their way into the map of
crates. The CrateLoader trait was altered to return everything in one method
instead of having separate methods for finding information.

31755e2452 rustc: Use CStore, not a separate crate cache
This separate crate cache is one factor which is causing libstd to be loaded
twice during normal compilation. The crates loaded for syntax extensions have a
separate cache than the crates loaded for linking, so all crates are loaded once
per #[phase] they're tagged with.

This removes the cache and instead uses the CStore structure itself as the cache
for loaded crates. This should allow crates loaded during the syntax phase to be
shared with the crates loaded during the link phase.

Fix #13266.

There is a little bit of acrobatics in the definition of `crate_paths`

going to need them.

The other oddity is that I have replaced the `root_ident: Option<&str>`

who was expecting to see something like: `root: Option<&CratePaths>`.
I went with the approach here because I could not come up with code for

57e0908af3 syntax: Remove AbiSet, use one Abi
This change removes the AbiSet from the AST, converting all usage to have just
one Abi value. The current scheme selects a relevant ABI given a list of ABIs
based on the target architecture and how relevant each ABI is to that
architecture.

Instead of this mildly complicated scheme, only one ABI will be allowed in abi
strings, and pseudo-abis will be created for special cases as necessary. For
example the "system" abi exists for stdcall on win32 and C on win64.

15e6e8cf3e rustc: Stop using LLVMGetSectionName
The recent pull request to remove libc from libstd has hit a wall in compiling
on windows, and I've been trying to investigate on the try bots as to why (it
compiles locally just fine). To the best of my knowledge, the LLVM section
iterator is behaving badly when iterating over the sections of the libc DLL.

Upon investigating the LLVMGetSectionName function in LLVM, I discovered that
this function doesn't always return a null-terminated string. It returns the
data pointer of a StringRef instance (LLVM's equivalent of &str essentially),
but it has no method of returning the length of the name of the section.

This commit modifies the section iteration when loading libraries to invoke a
custom LLVMRustGetSectionName which will correctly return both the length and
the data pointer.

I have not yet verified that this will fix landing liblibc, as it will require a
snapshot before doing a full test. Regardless, this is a worrisome situation
regarding the LLVM API, and should likely be fixed anyway.

683197975c rustc: Switch tuple structs to have private fields
This is a continuation of the work done in #13184 to make struct fields private
by default. This commit finishes RFC 4 by making all tuple structs have private
fields by default. Note that enum variants are not affected.

A tuple struct having a private field means that it cannot be matched on in a
pattern match (both refutable and irrefutable), and it also cannot have a value
specified to be constructed. Similarly to private fields, switching the type of
a private field in a tuple struct should be able to be done in a backwards
compatible way.

The one snag that I ran into which wasn't mentioned in the RFC is that this
commit also forbids taking the value of a tuple struct constructor. For example,
this code now fails to compile:

    mod a {
        pub struct A(int);
    }

    let a: fn(int) -> a::A = a::A; //~ ERROR: first field is private

Although no fields are bound in this example, it exposes implementation details
through the type itself. For this reason, taking the value of a struct
constructor with private fields is forbidden (outside the containing module).
