639759b7f4 std: Refactor liballoc out of lib{std,sync}
This commit is part of the libstd facade RFC, issue #13851. This creates a new
library, liballoc, which is intended to be the core allocation library for all
of Rust. It is pinned on the basic assumption that an allocation failure is an
abort or failure.

This module has inherited the heap/libc_heap modules from std::rt, the owned/rc
modules from std, and the arc module from libsync. These three pointers are
currently the three most core pointer implementations in Rust.

The UnsafeArc type in std::sync should be considered deprecated and replaced by
Arc<Unsafe<T>>. This commit does not currently migrate to this type, but future
commits will continue this refactoring.

4e9e091e91 syntax: Tighten search paths for inner modules
This is an implementation of RFC 16. A module can now only be loaded if the
module declaring `mod name;` "owns" the current directory. A module is
considered as owning its directory if it meets one of the following criteria:

* It is the top-level crate file
* It is a `mod.rs` file
* It was loaded via `#[path]`
* It was loaded via `include!`
* The module was declared via an inline `mod foo { ... }` statement

For example, this directory structure is now invalid

    // lib.rs
    mod foo;

    // foo.rs
    mod bar;

    // bar.rs;
    fn bar() {}

With this change `foo.rs` must be renamed to `foo/mod.rs`, and `bar.rs` must be
renamed to `foo/bar.rs`. This makes it clear that `bar` is a submodule of `foo`,
and can only be accessed through `foo`.

7cbec5566c rustc: Stop leaking enum variants into children
This plugs a leak where resolve was treating enums defined in parent modules as
in-scope for all children modules when resolving a pattern identifier. This
eliminates the code path in resolve entirely.

If this breaks any existing code, then it indicates that the variants need to be
explicitly imported into the module.

1de4b65d2a Updates with core::fmt changes
1. Wherever the `buf` field of a `Formatter` was used, the `Formatter` is used
   instead.
2. The usage of `write_fmt` is minimized as much as possible, the `write!` macro
   is preferred wherever possible.
3. Usage of `fmt::write` is minimized, favoring the `write!` macro instead.

930308b16e A test case for a bug I found in the new SVH while reviewing it.
Namely: non-pub `use` declarations *are* significant to the SVH
computation, since they can change which traits are part of the method
resolution step, and thus affect which methods get called from the
(potentially inlined) code.

Provides better help for the resolve failures inside an `impl` if the name matches:
- a field on the self type
- a method on the self type
- a method on the current trait ref (in a trait impl)

Not handling trait method suggestions if in a regular `impl` (as you can see on line 69 of the test), I believe it is possible though.

Also, provides a better message when `self` fails to resolve due to being a static method.

It's using some unsafe pointers to skip copying the larger structures (which are only used in error conditions); it's likely possible to get it working with lifetimes (all the useful refs should outlive the visitor calls) but I haven't really figured that out for this case. (can switch to copying code if wanted)

f94d671bfa core: Remove the cast module
This commit revisits the `cast` module in libcore and libstd, and scrutinizes
all functions inside of it. The result was to remove the `cast` module entirely,
folding all functionality into the `mem` module. Specifically, this is the fate
of each function in the `cast` module.

* transmute - This function was moved to `mem`, but it is now marked as
              #[unstable]. This is due to planned changes to the `transmute`
              function and how it can be invoked (see the #[unstable] comment).
              For more information, see RFC 5 and #12898

* transmute_copy - This function was moved to `mem`, with clarification that is
                   is not an error to invoke it with T/U that are different
                   sizes, but rather that it is strongly discouraged. This
                   function is now #[stable]

* forget - This function was moved to `mem` and marked #[stable]

* bump_box_refcount - This function was removed due to the deprecation of
                      managed boxes as well as its questionable utility.

* transmute_mut - This function was previously deprecated, and removed as part
                  of this commit.

* transmute_mut_unsafe - This function doesn't serve much of a purpose when it
                         can be achieved with an `as` in safe code, so it was
                         removed.

* transmute_lifetime - This function was removed because it is likely a strong
                       indication that code is incorrect in the first place.

* transmute_mut_lifetime - This function was removed for the same reasons as
                           `transmute_lifetime`

* copy_lifetime - This function was moved to `mem`, but it is marked
                  `#[unstable]` now due to the likelihood of being removed in
                  the future if it is found to not be very useful.

* copy_mut_lifetime - This function was also moved to `mem`, but had the same
                      treatment as `copy_lifetime`.

* copy_lifetime_vec - This function was removed because it is not used today,
                      and its existence is not necessary with DST
                      (copy_lifetime will suffice).

In summary, the cast module was stripped down to these functions, and then the
functions were moved to the `mem` module.

    forget - #[stable]
    copy_lifetime - #[unstable]
    copy_mut_lifetime - #[unstable]

have no value. This also ensures that we can handle some obscure cases of fn

  of importing std::local_data, you now use "key.set()" and "key.get()".

  get() and get_mut() no long require closures, but rather return
  Option<SmartPointer> where the smart pointer takes care of relinquishing the
  borrow and also implements the necessary Deref traits

* The modify() function was removed to cut the local_data interface down to its
  bare essentials (similarly to how RefCell removed set/get).

This is the second step in implementing #13851. This PR cannot currently land until a snapshot exists with #13892, but I imagine that this review will take longer.

This PR refactors a large amount of functionality outside of the standard library into a new library, libcore. This new library has 0 dependencies (in theory). In practice, this library currently depends on these symbols being available:

* `rust_begin_unwind` and `rust_fail_bounds_check` - These are the two entry points of failure in libcore. The symbols are provided by libstd currently. In the future (see the bullets on #13851) this will be officially supported with nice error mesages. Additionally, there will only be one failure entry point once `std::fmt` migrates to libcore.
* `memcpy` - This is often generated by LLVM. This is also quite trivial to implement for any platform, so I'm not too worried about this.
* `memcmp` - This is required for comparing strings. This function is quite common *everywhere*, so I don't feel to bad about relying on a consumer of libcore to define it.
* `malloc` and `free` - This is quite unfortunate, and is a temporary stopgap until we deal with the `~` situation. More details can be found in the module `core::should_not_exist`
* `fmod` and `fmodf` - These exist because the `Rem` trait is defined in libcore, so the `Rem` implementation for floats must also be defined in libcore. I imagine that any platform using floating-point modulus will have these symbols anyway, and otherwise they will be optimized out.
* `fdim` and `fdimf` - Like `fmod`, these are from the `Signed` trait being defined in libcore. I don't expect this to be much of a problem

These dependencies all "Just Work" for now because libcore only exists as an rlib, not as a dylib.

The commits themselves are organized to show that the overall diff of this extraction is not all that large. Most modules were able to be moved with very few modifications. The primary module left out of this iteration is `std::fmt`. I plan on migrating the `fmt` module to libcore, but I chose to not do so at this time because it had implications on the `Writer` trait that I wanted to deal with in isolation. There are a few breaking changes in these commits, but they are fairly minor, and are all labeled with `[breaking-change]`.

The nastiest parts of this movement come up with `~[T]` and `~str` being language-defined types today. I believe that much of this nastiness will get better over time as we migrate towards `Vec<T>` and `Str` (or whatever the types will be named). There will likely always be some extension traits, but the situation won't be as bad as it is today.

Known deficiencies:

* rustdoc will get worse in terms of readability. This is the next issue I will tackle as part of #13851. If others think that the rustdoc change should happen first, I can also table this to fix rustdoc first.
* The compiler reveals that all these types are reexports via error messages like `core::option::Option`. This is filed as #13065, and I believe that issue would have a higher priority now. I do not currently plan on fixing that as part of #13851. If others believe that this issue should be fixed, I can also place it on the roadmap for #13851.

I recommend viewing these changes on a commit-by-commit basis. The overall change is likely too overwhelming to take in.

This change makes internal compile errors in the compile-fail tests failures.

I believe this is the correct behaviour- those tests are intended to assert that the compiler doesn't proceed, not that it explodes.

So far, it fails on 4 tests in my environment, my testcase for #13943 which is what caused me to tackle this, and 3 others:

090040bf40 librustc: Remove ~EXPR, ~TYPE, and ~PAT from the language, except
for `~str`/`~[]`.

Note that `~self` still remains, since I forgot to add support for
`Box<self>` before the snapshot.

How to update your code:

* Instead of `~EXPR`, you should write `box EXPR`.

* Instead of `~TYPE`, you should write `Box<Type>`.

* Instead of `~PATTERN`, you should write `box PATTERN`.

dylibs. This is to satisfy the requirement that each object appear at most once
in the final output products. This is a bit limiting, and the upcoming libcore
library cannot exist as a dylib, so these rules must change.

The goal of this commit is to enable *some* use cases for mixing rlibs and
dylibs, primarily libcore's use case. It is not targeted at allowing an
exhaustive number of linkage flavors.

There is a new dependency_format module in rustc which calculates what format
each upstream library should be linked as in each output type of the current
unit of compilation. The module itself contains many gory details about what's
going on here.

Currently, rustc requires that a linkage be a product of 100% rlibs or 100%
dylibs. This is to satisfy the requirement that each object appear at most once
in the final output products. This is a bit limiting, and the upcoming libcore
library cannot exist as a dylib, so these rules must change.

The goal of this commit is to enable *some* use cases for mixing rlibs and
dylibs, primarily libcore's use case. It is not targeted at allowing an
exhaustive number of linkage flavors.

There is a new dependency_format module in rustc which calculates what format

moves computation. ExprUseVisitor is a visitor that walks the AST for a
function and calls a delegate to inform it where borrows, copies, and moves
occur.

In this patch, I rewrite the gather_loans visitor to use ExprUseVisitor, but in
future patches, I think we could rewrite regionck, check_loans, and possibly
other passes to use it as well. This would refactor the repeated code between
those places that tries to determine where copies/moves/etc occur.

c0ff3caae1 Refactor ty_str to use a ~(str) representation.
Similar to my recent changes to ~[T]/&[T], these changes remove the vstore abstraction and represent str types as ~(str) and &(str). The Option<uint> in ty_str is the length of the string, None if the string is dynamically sized.

This allows the use of syntax extensions when cross-compiling (fixing #12102). It does this by encoding the target triple in the crate metadata and checking it when searching for files. Currently the crate triple must match the host triple when there is a macro_registrar_fn, it must match the target triple when linking, and can match either when only macro_rules! macros are used.

4ac89cd276 Enable use of syntax extensions when cross compiling.
This adds the target triple to the crate metadata.
When searching for a crate the phase (link, syntax) is taken into account.
During link phase only crates matching the target triple are considered.
During syntax phase, either the target or host triple will be accepted, unless
the crate defines a macro_registrar, in which case only the host triple will
match.

79d1e5df21 Support lifetime suggestion for method
This includes a change to the way lifetime names are generated. Say we
figure that `[#0, 'a, 'b]` have to be the same lifetimes, then instead
of just generating a new lifetime `'c` like before to replace them, we
would reuse `'a`. This is done so that when the lifetime name comes
from an impl, we don't give something that's completely off, and we
don't have to do much work to figure out where the name came from. For
example, for the following code snippet:

```rust
struct Baz<'x> {
    bar: &'x int
}

impl<'x> Baz<'x> {
    fn baz1(&self) -> &int {
        self.bar
    }
}
```

`[#1, 'x]` (where `#1` is BrAnon(1) and refers to lifetime of `&int`)
have to be marked the same lifetime. With the old method, we would
generate a new lifetime `'a` and suggest `fn baz1(&self) -> &'a int`
or `fn baz1<'a>(&self) -> &'a int`, both of which are wrong.

1f2c18a0af rustc: Don't allow priv use to shadow pub use
Previously, a private use statement would shadow a public use statement, all of
a sudden publicly exporting the privately used item. The correct behavior here
is to only shadow the use for the module in question, but for now it just
reverts the entire name to private so the pub use doesn't have much effect.

The behavior isn't exactly what we want, but this no longer has backwards
compatibility hazards.

Previously resolve was checking the "import resolution" for whether an import
had succeeded or not, but this was the same structure filled in by a previous
import if a name is shadowed. Instead, this alters resolve to consult the local
resolve state (as opposed to the shared one) to test whether an import succeeded
or not.

83d2c0b8a6 rustc: Disallow importing through use statements
Resolve is currently erroneously allowing imports through private `use`
statements in some circumstances, even across module boundaries. For example,
this code compiles successfully today:

    use std::c_str;
    mod test {
        use c_str::CString;
    }

This should not be allowed because it was explicitly decided that private `use`
statements are purely bringing local names into scope, they are not
participating further in name resolution.

As a consequence of this patch, this code, while valid today, is now invalid:

    mod test {
        use std::c_str;

        unsafe fn foo() {
            ::test::c_str::CString::new(0 as *u8, false);
        }
    }

While plausibly acceptable, I found it to be more consistent if private imports
were only considered candidates to resolve the first component in a path, and no
others.

I think that the test case from this issue has become out of date with resolve
changes in the past 9 months, and it's not entirely clear to me what the
original bug was.

Regardless, it seems like tricky resolve behavior, so tests were added to make
sure things resolved correctly and warnings were correctly reported.

767ed1a71f rustc: Prevent repeated moves out of proc upvars

d1c584e41b syntax: Tweak parsing lifetime bounds on closures
In summary these are some example transitions this change makes:

    'a ||       => ||: 'a
    proc:Send() => proc():Send

The intended syntax for closures is to put the lifetime bound not at the front
but rather in the list of bounds. Currently there is no official support in the
AST for bounds that are not 'static, so this case is currently specially handled
in the parser to desugar to what the AST is expecting. Additionally, this moves
the bounds on procedures to the correct position, which is after the argument
list.

The current grammar for closures and procedures is:

    procedure := 'proc' [ '<' lifetime-list '>' ] '(' arg-list ')'
                        [ ':' bound-list ] [ '->' type ]
    closure := [ 'unsafe' ] ['<' lifetime-list '>' ] '|' arg-list '|'
                        [ ':' bound-list ] [ '->' type ]
    lifetime-list := lifetime | lifetime ',' lifetime-list
    arg-list := ident ':' type | ident ':' type ',' arg-list
    bound-list := bound | bound '+' bound-list
    bound := path | lifetime

This does not currently handle the << ambiguity in `Option<<'a>||>`, I am
deferring that to a later patch. Additionally, this removes the support for the
obsolete syntaxes of ~fn and &fn.

This commit tightens up the restriction on types used to index slices to require
exactly `uint` indices. Previously any integral type was accepted, but this
leads to a few subtle problems:

  * 64-bit indices don't make much sense on 32-bit systems
  * Signed indices for slices used as negative indexing isn't implemented

This was discussed at the recent work week, and also has some discussion on
issue #10453.

683197975c rustc: Switch tuple structs to have private fields
This is a continuation of the work done in #13184 to make struct fields private
by default. This commit finishes RFC 4 by making all tuple structs have private
fields by default. Note that enum variants are not affected.

A tuple struct having a private field means that it cannot be matched on in a
pattern match (both refutable and irrefutable), and it also cannot have a value
specified to be constructed. Similarly to private fields, switching the type of
a private field in a tuple struct should be able to be done in a backwards
compatible way.

The one snag that I ran into which wasn't mentioned in the RFC is that this
commit also forbids taking the value of a tuple struct constructor. For example,
this code now fails to compile:

    mod a {
        pub struct A(int);
    }

    let a: fn(int) -> a::A = a::A; //~ ERROR: first field is private

Although no fields are bound in this example, it exposes implementation details
through the type itself. For this reason, taking the value of a struct
constructor with private fields is forbidden (outside the containing module).

c6bbb95ce2 syntax: Accept meta matchers in macros
This removes the `attr` matcher and adds a `meta` matcher. The previous `attr`
matcher is now ambiguous because it doesn't disambiguate whether it means inner
attribute or outer attribute.

The new behavior can still be achieved by taking an argument of the form
`#[$foo:meta]` (the brackets are part of the macro pattern).

  wrapping a piece of data
* Remove `RWArc<T>` in favor of `Arc<RWLock<T>>`
* Remove `MutexArc<T>` in favor of `Arc<Mutex<T>>`
* Shuffle around where things are located
  * The `arc` module now only contains `Arc`
  * A new `lock` module contains `Mutex`, `RWLock`, and `Barrier`
  * A new `raw` module contains the primitive implementations of `Semaphore`,
    `Mutex`, and `RWLock`
* The Deref/DerefMut trait was implemented where appropriate
* `CowArc` was removed, the functionality is now part of `Arc` and is tagged
  with `#[experimental]`.
* The crate now has #[deny(missing_doc)]
* `Arc` now supports weak pointers

This is not a large-scale rewrite of the functionality contained within the
`sync` crate, but rather a shuffling of who does what an a thinner hierarchy of
ownership to allow for better composability.

`Share` implies that all *reachable* content is *threadsafe*.

Threadsafe is defined as "exposing no operation that permits a data race if multiple threads have access to a &T pointer simultaneously". (NB: the type system should guarantee that if you have access to memory via a &T pointer, the only other way to gain access to that memory is through another &T pointer)...

873f7408bd rustc: test: don't silently ignore bad benches
This is adequate because when a function has a type that isn't caught here,
that is, it has a single argument, but it *isn't* `&mut BenchHarness`, it
errors later on with:

     error: mismatched types: expected `fn(&mut test::BenchHarness)` but found
     `fn(int)` (expected &-ptr but found int)

which I consider acceptable.

cc6ec8df95 log: Introduce liblog, the old std::logging
This commit moves all logging out of the standard library into an external
crate. This crate is the new crate which is responsible for all logging macros
and logging implementation. A few reasons for this change are:

* The crate map has always been a bit of a code smell among rust programs. It
  has difficulty being loaded on almost all platforms, and it's used almost
  exclusively for logging and only logging. Removing the crate map is one of the
  end goals of this movement.

* The compiler has a fair bit of special support for logging. It has the
  __log_level() expression as well as generating a global word per module
  specifying the log level. This is unfairly favoring the built-in logging
  system, and is much better done purely in libraries instead of the compiler
  itself.

* Initialization of logging is much easier to do if there is no reliance on a
  magical crate map being available to set module log levels.

* If the logging library can be written outside of the standard library, there's
  no reason that it shouldn't be. It's likely that we're not going to build the
  highest quality logging library of all time, so third-party libraries should
  be able to provide just as high-quality logging systems as the default one
  provided in the rust distribution.

With a migration such as this, the change does not come for free. There are some
subtle changes in the behavior of liblog vs the previous logging macros:

* The core change of this migration is that there is no longer a physical
  log-level per module. This concept is still emulated (it is quite useful), but
  there is now only a global log level, not a local one. This global log level
  is a reflection of the maximum of all log levels specified. The previously
  generated logging code looked like:

    if specified_level <= __module_log_level() {
        println!(...)
    }

  The newly generated code looks like:

    if specified_level <= ::log::LOG_LEVEL {
        if ::log::module_enabled(module_path!()) {
            println!(...)
        }
    }

  Notably, the first layer of checking is still intended to be "super fast" in
  that it's just a load of a global word and a compare. The second layer of
  checking is executed to determine if the current module does indeed have
  logging turned on.

  This means that if any module has a debug log level turned on, all modules
  with debug log levels get a little bit slower (they all do more expensive
  dynamic checks to determine if they're turned on or not).

  Semantically, this migration brings no change in this respect, but
  runtime-wise, this will have a perf impact on some code.

* A `RUST_LOG=::help` directive will no longer print out a list of all modules
  that can be logged. This is because the crate map will no longer specify the
  log levels of all modules, so the list of modules is not known. Additionally,
  warnings can no longer be provided if a malformed logging directive was
  supplied.

The new "hello world" for logging looks like:

    fn main() {
        debug!("Hello, world!");
    }

## read+write modifier '+'
This small sugar was left out in the original implementation (#5359).
 
When an output operand with the '+' modifier is encountered, we store the index of that operand alongside the expression to create and append an input operand later. The following lines are equivalent:

asm!("" : "+m"(expr));
asm!("" : "=m"(expr) : "0"(expr));
```
## misplaced options and clobbers give a warning
It's really annoying when a small typo might change behavior without any warning.

Fixed incorrect order of propagation.

f079c94f72 rustc: Remove matching on ~str from the language
The `~str` type is not long for this world as it will be superseded by the
soon-to-come DST changes for the language. The new type will be
`~Str`, and matching over the allocation will no longer be supported.
Matching on `&str` will continue to work, in both a pre and post DST world.

6fa4bbeed4 std: Move rand to librand.
This functionality is not super-core and so doesn't need to be included
in std. It's possible that std may need rand (it does a little bit now,
for io::test) in which case the functionality required could be moved to
a secret hidden module and reexposed by librand.

Unfortunately, using #[deprecated] here is hard: there's too much to
mock to make it feasible, since we have to ensure that programs still
typecheck to reach the linting phase.

ec57db083f rustc: Add the concept of a Strict Version Hash
This new SVH is used to uniquely identify all crates as a snapshot in time of
their ABI/API/publicly reachable state. This current calculation is just a hash
of the entire crate's AST. This is obviously incorrect, but it is currently the
reality for today.

This change threads through the new Svh structure which originates from crate
dependencies. The concept of crate id hash is preserved to provide efficient
matching on filenames for crate loading. The inspected hash once crate metadata
is opened has been changed to use the new Svh.

The goal of this hash is to identify when upstream crates have changed but
downstream crates have not been recompiled. This will prevent the def-id drift
problem where upstream crates were recompiled, thereby changing their metadata,
but downstream crates were not recompiled.

In the future this hash can be expanded to exclude contents of the AST like doc
comments, but limitations in the compiler prevent this change from being made at
this time.

859277dfdb rustc: implement a lint for publicly visible private types.
These are types that are in exported type signatures, but are not
exported themselves, e.g.

    struct Foo { ... }

    pub fn bar() -> Foo { ... }

will warn about the Foo.

Such types are not listed in documentation, and cannot be named outside
the crate in which they are declared, which is very user-unfriendly.

9cc26cfdf4 test: Clean out the test suite a bit
This updates a number of ignore-test tests, and removes a few completely
outdated tests due to the feature being tested no longer being supported.

This brings a number of bench/shootout tests up to date so they're compiling
again. I make no claims to the performance of these benchmarks, it's just nice
to not have bitrotted code.

4690ab0ea8 Match binding is assignment
In its first pass, namely gather_loans, the borrow checker tracks the
initialization sites among other things it does. It does so for let
bindings with initializers but not for bindings in match arms, which are
effectively also assignments. This patch does that for borrow checker.

b78b749810 Remove all ToStr impls, add Show impls
This commit changes the ToStr trait to:

    impl<T: fmt::Show> ToStr for T {
        fn to_str(&self) -> ~str { format!("{}", *self) }
    }

The ToStr trait has been on the chopping block for quite awhile now, and this is
the final nail in its coffin. The trait and the corresponding method are not
being removed as part of this commit, but rather any implementations of the
`ToStr` trait are being forbidden because of the generic impl. The new way to
get the `to_str()` method to work is to implement `fmt::Show`.

Formatting into a `&mut Writer` (as `format!` does) is much more efficient than
`ToStr` when building up large strings. The `ToStr` trait forces many
intermediate allocations to be made while the `fmt::Show` trait allows
incremental buildup in the same heap allocated buffer. Additionally, the
`fmt::Show` trait is much more extensible in terms of interoperation with other
`Writer` instances and in more situations. By design the `ToStr` trait requires
at least one allocation whereas the `fmt::Show` trait does not require any
allocations.

2a14e084cf Move std::{trie, hashmap} to libcollections
These two containers are indeed collections, so their place is in
libcollections, not in libstd. There will always be a hash map as part of the
standard distribution of Rust, but by moving it out of the standard library it
makes libstd that much more portable to more platforms and environments.

This conveniently also removes the stuttering of 'std::hashmap::HashMap',
although 'collections::HashMap' is only one character shorter.

are not necessary and therefore an unnecessary_parens warning is raised when

NOTE: In `let` declarations this does not work as intended. Is it possible that they do not count as assignment expressions (`ExprAssign`)? (edit: this is fixed by now)

Furthermore, there are some cases that I fixed in the rest of the code, where parentheses could potentially enhance readability. Compare these lines:

```rust
a = b == c;
a = (b == c);
```

Thus, after having worked on this I'm not entirely sure, whether we should go through with this patch or not. Probably a matter of debate. ;)

9982de6397 Warn about unnecessary parentheses upon assignment
Closes #12366.

Parentheses around assignment statements such as

    let mut a = (0);
    a = (1);
    a += (2);

are not necessary and therefore an unnecessary_parens warning is raised when
statements like this occur.

The warning mechanism was refactored along the way to allow for code reuse
between the routines for checking expressions and statements.

Code had to be adopted throughout the compiler and standard libraries to comply
with this modification of the lint.

Travis CI provides an easy-to-use continuous integration infrastructure for
github repos to use. Travis will automatically test all PRs which are opened
against the rust repository, informing PR owners of the test results.

I believe that this will be a very convenient piece of infrastructure as we'll
be able to reduce the load on bors quite a bit. In theory all PRs opened have
had the full test suite run against them, but unfortunately this is rarely the
case (I'm a prime suspect). Travis will be able to provide easy and relatively
quick (~30min) feedback for PRs. By ensuring fewer failures on bors, we can
hopefully feed more successful jobs to bors.

Overall, I expect this to be very helpful for new contributors as well as
regular contributors as it's another layer of tests being run which will
hopefully catch things sooner. One of the most convenient parts about using
Travis is that there's very little burden in terms of maintenance, and if things
go wrong we can easily turn travis completely off.

Note that this is *not* the metric by which a PR will be merged with. Using
travis will purely be another source for running tests, we will continue to gate
all PRs on bors.

d223dd1e57 std: rewrite Hash to make it more generic
This patch merges IterBytes and Hash traits, which clears up the
confusion of using `#[deriving(IterBytes)]` to support hashing.
Instead, it now is much easier to use the new `#[deriving(Hash)]`
for making a type hashable with a stream hash.

Furthermore, it supports custom non-stream-based hashers, such as
if a value's hash was cached in a database.

This does not yet replace the old IterBytes-hash with this new
version.

afa5f574ff Re-work loading crates with nicer errors
This commit rewrites crate loading internally in attempt to look at less
metadata and provide nicer errors. The loading is now split up into a few
stages:

1. Collect a mapping of (hash => ~[Path]) for a set of candidate libraries for a
   given search. The hash is the hash in the filename and the Path is the
   location of the library in question. All candidates are filtered based on
   their prefix/suffix (dylib/rlib appropriate) and then the hash/version are
   split up and are compared (if necessary).

   This means that if you're looking for an exact hash of library you don't have
   to open up the metadata of all libraries named the same, but also in your
   path.

2. Once this mapping is constructed, each (hash, ~[Path]) pair is filtered down
   to just a Path. This is necessary because the same rlib could show up twice
   in the path in multiple locations. Right now the filenames are based on just
   the crate id, so this could be indicative of multiple version of a crate
   during one crate_id lifetime in the path. If multiple duplicate crates are
   found, an error is generated.

3. Now that we have a mapping of (hash => Path), we error on multiple versions
   saying that multiple versions were found. Only if there's one (hash => Path)
   pair do we actually return that Path and its metadata.

With this restructuring, it restructures code so errors which were assertions
previously are now first-class errors. Additionally, this should read much less
metadata with lots of crates of the same name or same version in a path.

This patch adds a new keyword `crate` which is intended to replace mod
in the context of `extern mod` as part of the issue #9880. The patch
doesn't replace all `extern mod` cases since it is necessary to first
push a new snapshot 0.

The implementation could've been less invasive than this. However I
preferred to take this chance to split the `parse_item_foreign_mod`
method and pull the `extern crate` part out of there, hence the new
method `parse_item_foreign_crate`.

0a6b9219d1 Rewrite channels yet again for upgradeability
This, the Nth rewrite of channels, is not a rewrite of the core logic behind
channels, but rather their API usage. In the past, we had the distinction
between oneshot, stream, and shared channels, but the most recent rewrite
dropped oneshots in favor of streams and shared channels.

This distinction of stream vs shared has shown that it's not quite what we'd
like either, and this moves the `std::comm` module in the direction of "one
channel to rule them all". There now remains only one Chan and one Port.

This new channel is actually a hybrid oneshot/stream/shared channel under the
hood in order to optimize for the use cases in question. Additionally, this also
reduces the cognitive burden of having to choose between a Chan or a SharedChan
in an API.

My simple benchmarks show no reduction in efficiency over the existing channels
today, and a 3x improvement in the oneshot case. I sadly don't have a
pre-last-rewrite compiler to test out the old old oneshots, but I would imagine
that the performance is comparable, but slightly slower (due to atomic reference
counting).

This commit also brings the bonus bugfix to channels that the pending queue of
messages are all dropped when a Port disappears rather then when both the Port
and the Chan disappear.

fourcc!() allows you to embed FourCC (or OSType) values that are
evaluated as u32 literals. It takes a 4-byte ASCII string and produces
the u32 resulting in interpreting those 4 bytes as a u32, using either
the platform-native endianness, or explicitly as big or little endian.

It was possible to trigger a stack overflow in rustc because the routine used to verify enum representability,
type_structurally_contains, would recurse on inner types until hitting the original type. The overflow condition was when a different structurally recursive type (enum or struct) was contained in the type being checked.

I suspect my solution isn't as efficient as it could be. I pondered adding a cache of previously-seen types to avoid duplicating work (if enums A and B both contain type C, my code goes through C twice), but I didn't want to do anything that may not be necessary.

I'm a new contributor, so please pay particular attention to any unidiomatic code, misuse of terminology, bad naming of tests, or similar horribleness :)

Updated to verify struct representability as well.

The general consensus is that we want to move away from conditions for I/O, and I propose a two-step plan for doing so:

1. Warn about unused `Result` types. When all of I/O returns `Result`, it will require you inspect the return value for an error *only if* you have a result you want to look at. By default, for things like `write` returning `Result<(), Error>`, these will all go silently ignored. This lint will prevent blind ignorance of these return values, letting you know that there's something you should do about them.

2. Implement a `try!` macro:

```
macro_rules! try( ($e:expr) => (match $e { Ok(e) => e, Err(e) => return Err(e) }) )
```

With these two tools combined, I feel that we get almost all the benefits of conditions. The first step (the lint) is a sanity check that you're not ignoring return values at callsites. The second step is to provide a convenience method of returning early out of a sequence of computations. After thinking about this for awhile, I don't think that we need the so-called "do-notation" in the compiler itself because I think it's just *too* specialized. Additionally, the `try!` macro is super lightweight, easy to understand, and works almost everywhere. As soon as you want to do something more fancy, my answer is "use match".

Basically, with these two tools in action, I would be comfortable removing conditions. What do others think about this strategy?

This PR specifically implements the `unused_result` lint. I actually added two lints, `unused_result` and `unused_must_use`, and the first commit has the rationale for why `unused_result` is turned off by default.

9896beb5b5 Implement an unused_result lint
I attempted to implement the lint in two steps. My first attempt was a
default-warn lint about *all* unused results. While this attempt did indeed find
many possible bugs, I felt that the false-positive rate was too high to be
turned on by default for all of Rust.

My second attempt was to make unused-result a default-allow lint, but allow
certain types to opt-in to the notion of "you must use this". For example, the
Result type is now flagged with #[must_use]. This lint about "must use" types is
warn by default (it's different from unused-result).

The unused_must_use lint had a 100% hit rate in the compiler, but there's not
that many places that return Result right now. I believe that this lint is a
crucial step towards moving away from conditions for I/O (because all I/O will
return Result by default). I'm worried that this lint is a little too specific
to Result itself, but I believe that the false positive rate for the
unused_result lint is too high to make it useful when turned on by default.
