6ce76091c7 Auto merge of #96745 - ehuss:even-more-attribute-validation, r=cjgillot
Visit attributes in more places.

This adds 3 loosely related changes (I can split PRs if desired):

- Attribute checking on pattern struct fields.
- Attribute checking on struct expression fields.
- Lint level visiting on pattern struct fields, struct expression fields, and generic parameters.

There are still some lints which ignore lint levels in various positions. This is a consequence of how the lints themselves are implemented. For example, lint levels on associated consts don't work with `unused_braces`.

dcd5177fd4 Add visitors for PatField and ExprField.
This helps simplify the code. It also fixes it to use the correct parent
when lowering. One consequence is the `non_snake_case` lint needed
to change the way it looked for parent nodes in a struct pattern.

This also includes a small fix to use the correct `Target` for
expression field attribute validation.

Currently it's reported as either `TraitItem` or `ImplItem`. This commit
changes it to `AssocItem`, because having the report match the type name

that important here.

Rollup merge of #96478 - WaffleLapkin:rustc_default_body_unstable, r=Aaron1011
Implement `#[rustc_default_body_unstable]`

This PR implements a new stability attribute — `#[rustc_default_body_unstable]`.

`#[rustc_default_body_unstable]` controls the stability of default bodies in traits.
For example:
```rust
pub trait Trait {
    #[rustc_default_body_unstable(feature = "feat", isssue = "none")]
    fn item() {}
}
```
In order to implement `Trait` user needs to either
- implement `item` (even though it has a default implementation)
- enable `#![feature(feat)]`

This is useful in conjunction with [`#[rustc_must_implement_one_of]`](https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/92164), we may want to relax requirements for a trait, for example allowing implementing either of `PartialEq::{eq, ne}`, but do so in a safe way — making implementation of only `PartialEq::ne` unstable.

Continuation of #92972. Fixes #92790.

The language team has already commented on this in https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/92972#issuecomment-1021511970; I have incorporated their requests here. Specifically, there is now a new allow-by-default `unused_tuple_struct_fields` lint (name bikesheddable), and fields of unit type are ignored (https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/92972#issuecomment-1021815408), so error messages look like this:
```
Prevent ICE for `doc_alias` on match arm, statement, expression
Fixes #99777.
This is a pretty minimal fix that should be safe, since rustdoc doesn't generate documentation for match arms, statements, or expressions. I mentioned in the linked issue that the `doc_alias` target checking should probably be improved to avoid future ICEs, but as a new contributor, I'm not confident enough with the HIR types to make a larger change.
7bab769b58 lint: add bad opt access internal lint
Some command-line options accessible through `sess.opts` are best
accessed through wrapper functions on `Session`, `TyCtxt` or otherwise,
rather than through field access on the option struct in the `Session`.
Adds a new lint which triggers on those options that should be accessed
through a wrapper function so that this is prohibited. Options are
annotated with a new attribute `rustc_lint_opt_deny_field_access` which
can specify the error message (i.e. "use this other function instead")
to be emitted.
A simpler alternative would be to simply rename the options in the
option type so that it is clear they should not be used, however this
doesn't prevent uses, just discourages them. Another alternative would
be to make the option fields private, and adding accessor functions on
the option types, however the wrapper functions sometimes rely on
additional state from `Session` or `TyCtxt` which wouldn't be available
in an function on the option type, so the accessor would simply make the
field available and its use would be discouraged too.
be9cfb307e Auto merge of #99058 - michaelwoerister:remove-stable-set-and-map, r=nagisa
Remove the unused StableSet and StableMap types from rustc_data_structures.
The current implementation is not "stable" in the same sense that `HashStable` and `StableHasher` are stable, i.e. across compilation sessions. So, in my opinion, it's better to remove those types (which are basically unused anyway) than to give the wrong impression that these are safe for incr. comp.
I plan to provide new "stable" collection types soon that can be used to replace `FxHashMap` and `FxHashSet` in query results (see [draft](69d03ac7a7)). It's unsound that `HashMap` and `HashSet` implement `HashStable` (see https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/98890 for a recent P-critical bug caused by this) -- so we should make some progress there.
Support unstable moves via stable in unstable items
The libs-api team needs the ability to move an already stable item to a new location unstably, in this case for Error in core. Otherwise these changes are insta-stable making them much harder to merge.
This PR attempts to solve the problem by checking the stability of path segments as well as the last item in the path itself, which is currently the only thing checked.
As lints are created slightly differently than other diagnostics, intended to try make them translatable first and then look into the applicability of diagnostic structs but ended up just making most of the diagnostics in the crate translatable (which will still be useful if I do make a lot of them structs later anyway).
`is_like_emscripten` is equivalent to `os == "emscripten"`, so it's removed.
`is_like_fuchsia` is equivalent to `os == "fuchsia"`, so it's removed.
`is_like_osx` also falls into the same category and is equivalent to `vendor == "apple"`, but it's commonly used so I kept it as is for now.
`is_like_(solaris,windows,wasm)` are combinations of different operating systems or architectures (see compiler/rustc_target/src/spec/tests/tests_impl.rs) so they are also kept as is.
I think `is_like_wasm` (and maybe `is_like_osx`) are sufficiently closed sets, so we can remove these fields as well and replace them with methods like `fn is_like_wasm() { arch == "wasm32" || arch == "wasm64" }`.
On other hand, `is_like_solaris` and `is_like_windows` are sufficiently open and I can imagine custom targets introducing other values for `os`.
This is kind of a gray area.
# Stabilization proposal
This PR proposes the stabilization of `#![feature(nll)]` and the removal of `-Z borrowck`. Current borrow checking behavior of item bodies is currently done by first infering regions *lexically* and reporting any errors during HIR type checking. If there *are* any errors, then MIR borrowck (NLL) never occurs. If there *aren't* any errors, then MIR borrowck happens and any errors there would be reported. This PR removes the lexical region check of item bodies entirely and only uses MIR borrowck. Because MIR borrowck could never *not* be run for a compiled program, this should not break any programs. It does, however, change diagnostics significantly and allows a slightly larger set of programs to compile.
Tracking issue: #43234
RFC: https://github.com/rust-lang/rfcs/blob/master/text/2094-nll.md
Version: 1.63 (2022-06-30 => beta, 2022-08-11 => stable).
## Motivation
Over time, the Rust borrow checker has become "smarter" and thus allowed more programs to compile. There have been three different implementations: AST borrowck, MIR borrowck, and polonius (well, in progress). Additionally, there is the "lexical region resolver", which (roughly) solves the constraints generated through HIR typeck. It is not a full borrow checker, but does emit some errors.
The AST borrowck was the original implementation of the borrow checker and was part of the initially stabilized Rust 1.0. In mid 2017, work began to implement the current MIR borrow checker and that effort ompleted by the end of 2017, for the most part. During 2018, efforts were made to migrate away from the AST borrow checker to the MIR borrow checker - eventually culminating into "migrate" mode - where HIR typeck with lexical region resolving following by MIR borrow checking - being active by default in the 2018 edition.
In early 2019, migrate mode was turned on by default in the 2015 edition as well, but with MIR borrowck errors emitted as warnings. By late 2019, these warnings were upgraded to full errors. This was followed by the complete removal of the AST borrow checker.
In the period since, various errors emitted by the MIR borrow checker have been improved to the point that they are mostly the same or better than those emitted by the lexical region resolver.
While there do remain some degradations in errors (tracked under the [NLL-diagnostics tag](https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues?q=is%3Aopen+is%3Aissue+label%3ANLL-diagnostics), those are sufficiently small and rare enough that increased flexibility of MIR borrow check-only is now a worthwhile tradeoff.
## What is stabilized
As said previously, this does not fundamentally change the landscape of accepted programs. However, there are a [few](https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues?q=is%3Aopen+is%3Aissue+label%3ANLL-fixed-by-NLL) cases where programs can compile under `feature(nll)`, but not otherwise.
There are two notable patterns that are "fixed" by this stabilization. First, the `scoped_threads` feature, which is a continutation of a pre-1.0 API, can sometimes emit a [weird lifetime error](https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/95527) without NLL. Second, actually seen in the standard library. In the `Extend` impl for `HashMap`, there is an implied bound of `K: 'a` that is available with NLL on but not without - this is utilized in the impl.
As mentioned before, there are a large number of diagnostic differences. Most of them are better, but some are worse. None are serious or happen often enough to need to block this PR. The biggest change is the loss of error code for a number of lifetime errors in favor of more general "lifetime may not live long enough" error. While this may *seem* bad, the former error codes were just attempts to somewhat-arbitrarily bin together lifetime errors of the same type; however, on paper, they end up being roughly the same with roughly the same kinds of solutions.
## What isn't stabilized
This PR does not completely remove the lexical region resolver. In the future, it may be possible to remove that (while still keeping HIR typeck) or to remove it together with HIR typeck.
## Tests
Many test outputs get updated by this PR. However, there are number of tests specifically geared towards NLL under `src/test/ui/nll`
Rollup merge of #97495 - clarfonthey:e0788-no-coverage, r=nagisa
Add E0788 for improper #[no_coverage] usage
Essentially, this adds proper checking for the attribute (tracking issue #84605) and throws errors when it's put in obviously-wrong places, like on struct or const definitions. Most of the code is taken directly from the checks for the `#[inline]` attribute, since it's very similar.
Right now, the code only checks at the function level, but it seems reasonable to allow adding `#[no_coverage]` to individual blocks or expressions, so, for now those just throw `unused_attributes` warnings. Similarly, since there was a lot of desire to eventually allow recursive definitions as well on modules and impl blocks, these also throw `unused_attributes` instead of an error.
I'm not sure if anything has to be done since this error is technically for an unstable feature, but since an error for using unstable features will show up anyway, I think it's okay.
This is the first big piece needed for stabilising this attribute, although I personally would like to explore renaming it to `#[coverage(never)]` on a separate PR, which I will offer soon. There's a lot of discussion still to be had about that, which is why it will be kept separate.
I don't think much is needed besides adding this simple check and a UI test, but let me know if there's something else that should be added to make this happen.
level to UNstable. Previously, an item that was `const` but did not
explicitly state it was unstable was implicitly stable.
Implement sym operands for global_asm!
Tracking issue: #93333
This PR is pretty much a complete rewrite of `sym` operand support for inline assembly so that the same implementation can be shared by `asm!` and `global_asm!`. The main changes are:
- At the AST level, `sym` is represented as a special `InlineAsmSym` AST node containing a path instead of an `Expr`.
- At the HIR level, `sym` is split into `SymStatic` and `SymFn` depending on whether the path resolves to a static during AST lowering (defaults to `SynFn` if `get_early_res` fails).
  - `SymFn` is just an `AnonConst`. It runs through typeck and we just collect the resulting type at the end. An error is emitted if the type is not a `FnDef`.
  - `SymStatic` directly holds a path and the `DefId` of the `static` that it is pointing to.
- The representation at the MIR level is mostly unchanged. There is a minor change to THIR where `SymFn` is a constant instead of an expression.
- At the codegen level we need to apply the target's symbol mangling to the result of `tcx.symbol_name()` depending on the target. This is done by calling the LLVM name mangler, which handles all of the details.
  - On Mach-O, all symbols have a leading underscore.
  - On x86 Windows, different mangling is used for cdecl, stdcall, fastcall and vectorcall.
  - No mangling is needed on other platforms.
`MultiSpan` contains labels, which are more complicated with the
Don't emit non-asm contents error for naked function composed of errors
## Motivation
For naked functions an error is emitted when they are composed of anything other than a single asm!() block. However, this error triggers in a couple situations in which it adds no additional information or is actively misleading.
One example is if you do have an asm!() block but simply one with a syntax error:
```rust
#[naked]
unsafe extern "C" fn compiler_errors() {
    asm!(invalid_syntax)
}
```
This results in two errors, one for the syntax error itself and another telling you that you need an asm block in your function:
```rust
error[E0787]: naked functions must contain a single asm block
 --> src/main.rs:6:1
  |
6 | / unsafe extern "C" fn naked_compile_error() {
7 | |     asm!(blah)
8 | | }
  | |_^
```
This issue also comes up when [utilizing `compile_error!()` for improving your diagnostics](https://twitter.com/steveklabnik/status/1509538243020218372), such as raising a compiler error when compiling for an unsupported target.
## Implementation
The rules this PR implements are as follows:
1. If any non-erroneous  non-asm statement is included, an error will still occur
2. If multiple asm statements are included, an error will still occur
3. If 0 or 1 asm statements are present, as well as any non-zero number of erroneous statements, then this error will *not* be raised as it is likely either redundant or incorrect
The rule of thumb is effectively "if an error is present and its correction could change things, don't raise an error".
Handle rustc_const_stable attribute in library feature collector
The library feature collector in [compiler/rustc_passes/src/lib_features.rs](551b4fa395/compiler/rustc_passes/src/lib_features.rs) has only been looking at `#[stable(…)]`, `#[unstable(…)]`, and `#[rustc_const_unstable(…)]` attributes, while ignoring `#[rustc_const_stable(…)]`. The consequences of this were:
- When any const feature got stabilized (changing one or more `rustc_const_unstable` to `rustc_const_stable`), users who had previously enabled that unstable feature using `#![feature(…)]` would get told "unknown feature", rather than rustc's nicer "the feature … has been stable since … and no longer requires an attribute to enable".
    This can be seen in the way that https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/93957#issuecomment-1079794660 failed after rebase:
    ```console
    error[E0635]: unknown feature `const_ptr_offset`
      --> $DIR/offset_from_ub.rs:1:35
       |
    LL | #![feature(const_ptr_offset_from, const_ptr_offset)]
       |                                   ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
    ```
- We weren't enforcing that a particular feature is either stable everywhere or unstable everywhere, and that a feature that has been stabilized has the same stabilization version everywhere, both of which we enforce for the other stability attributes.
This PR updates the library feature collector to handle `rustc_const_stable`, and fixes places in the standard library and test suite where `rustc_const_stable` was being used in a way that does not meet the rules for a stability attribute.
constructor with a long obvious name.
Rollup merge of #94635 - jhpratt:merge-deprecated-attrs, r=davidtwco
Merge `#[deprecated]` and `#[rustc_deprecated]`
The first commit makes "reason" an alias for "note" in `#[rustc_deprecated]`, while still prohibiting it in `#[deprecated]`.
The second commit changes "suggestion" to not just be a feature of `#[rustc_deprecated]`. This is placed behind the new `deprecated_suggestion` feature. This needs a tracking issue; let me know if this PR will be approved and I can create one.
The third commit is what permits `#[deprecated]` to be used when `#![feature(staged_api)]` is enabled. This isn't yet used in stdlib (only tests), as it would require duplicating all deprecation attributes until a bootstrap occurs. I intend to submit a follow-up PR that replaces all uses and removes the remaining `#[rustc_deprecated]` code after the next bootstrap.
Emit `unused_attributes` if a level attr only has a reason
Fixes a comment from `compiler/rustc_lint/src/levels.rs`. Lint level attributes that only contain a reason will also trigger the `unused_attribute` lint. The lint now also checks for the `expect` lint level.
That's it, have a great rest of the day for everyone reasoning this 🙃
Only point at the end of the crate. We could try making it point at the
the output to be *worse*.
This change will make it so that VSCode will *not* underline the whole
file when `main` is missing, so other errors will be visible.
rustc_errors: let `DiagnosticBuilder::emit` return a "guarantee of emission".
That is, `DiagnosticBuilder` is now generic over the return type of `.emit()`, so we'll now have:
* `DiagnosticBuilder<ErrorReported>` for error (incl. fatal/bug) diagnostics
  * can only be created via a `const L: Level`-generic constructor, that limits allowed variants via a `where` clause, so not even `rustc_errors` can accidentally bypass this limitation
  * asserts `diagnostic.is_error()` on emission, just in case the construction restriction was bypassed (e.g. by replacing the whole `Diagnostic` inside `DiagnosticBuilder`)
  * `.emit()` returns `ErrorReported`, as a "proof" token that `.emit()` was called
    (though note that this isn't a real guarantee until after completing the work on
     #69426)
* `DiagnosticBuilder<()>` for everything else (warnings, notes, etc.)
  * can also be obtained from other `DiagnosticBuilder`s by calling `.forget_guarantee()`
This PR is a companion to other ongoing work, namely:
* #69426
  and it's ongoing implementation:
  #93222
  the API changes in this PR are needed to get statically-checked "only errors produce `ErrorReported` from `.emit()`", but doesn't itself provide any really strong guarantees without those other `ErrorReported` changes
* #93244
  would make the choices of API changes (esp. naming) in this PR fit better overall
In order to be able to let `.emit()` return anything trustable, several changes had to be made:
* `Diagnostic`'s `level` field is now private to `rustc_errors`, to disallow arbitrary "downgrade"s from "some kind of error" to "warning" (or anything else that doesn't cause compilation to fail)
  * it's still possible to replace the whole `Diagnostic` inside the `DiagnosticBuilder`, sadly, that's harder to fix, but it's unlikely enough that we can paper over it with asserts on `.emit()`
* `.cancel()` now consumes `DiagnosticBuilder`, preventing `.emit()` calls on a cancelled diagnostic
  * it's also now done internally, through `DiagnosticBuilder`-private state, instead of having a `Level::Cancelled` variant that can be read (or worse, written) by the user
  * this removes a hazard of calling `.cancel()` on an error then continuing to attach details to it, and even expect to be able to `.emit()` it
  * warnings were switched to *only* `can_emit_warnings` on emission (instead of pre-cancelling early)
  * `struct_dummy` was removed (as it relied on a pre-`Cancelled` `Diagnostic`)
* since `.emit()` doesn't consume the `DiagnosticBuilder` <sub>(I tried and gave up, it's much more work than this PR)</sub>,
  we have to make `.emit()` idempotent wrt the guarantees it returns
  * thankfully, `err.emit(); err.emit();` can return `ErrorReported` both times, as the second `.emit()` call has no side-effects *only* because the first one did do the appropriate emission
* `&mut Diagnostic` is now used in a lot of function signatures, which used to take `&mut DiagnosticBuilder` (in the interest of not having to make those functions generic)
  * the APIs were already mostly identical, allowing for low-effort porting to this new setup
  * only some of the suggestion methods needed some rework, to have the extra `DiagnosticBuilder` functionality on the `Diagnostic` methods themselves (that change is also present in #93259)
  * `.emit()`/`.cancel()` aren't available, but IMO calling them from an "error decorator/annotator" function isn't a good practice, and can lead to strange behavior (from the caller's perspective)
  * `.downgrade_to_delayed_bug()` was added, letting you convert any `.is_error()` diagnostic into a `delay_span_bug` one (which works because in both cases the guarantees available are the same)
This PR should ideally be reviewed commit-by-commit, since there is a lot of fallout in each.
