a68ec22053 Fix rustdoc --version when used with download-rustc
Previously, rustdoc would unconditionally report the version that *rustc* was compiled with.
That showed things like `nightly-2022-10-30`, which wasn't right, since this was a `dev` build compiled from source.

Fix it by changing `rustc_driver::version` to a macro expanded at invocation time.

56074b5231 Rewrite implementation of #[alloc_error_handler]
The new implementation doesn't use weak lang items and instead changes
`#[alloc_error_handler]` to an attribute macro just like
`#[global_allocator]`.

The attribute will generate the `__rg_oom` function which is called by
the compiler-generated `__rust_alloc_error_handler`. If no `__rg_oom`
function is defined in any crate then the compiler shim will call
`__rdl_oom` in the alloc crate which will simply panic.

This also fixes link errors with `-C link-dead-code` with
`default_alloc_error_handler`: `__rg_oom` was previously defined in the
alloc crate and would attempt to reference the `oom` lang item, even if
it didn't exist. This worked as long as `__rg_oom` was excluded from
linking since it was not called.

This is a prerequisite for the stabilization of
`default_alloc_error_handler` (#102318).

6153d3cbe6 Auto merge of #101212 - eholk:dyn-star, r=compiler-errors
Initial implementation of dyn*

This PR adds extremely basic and incomplete support for [dyn*](https://smallcultfollowing.com/babysteps//blog/2022/03/29/dyn-can-we-make-dyn-sized/). The goal is to get something in tree behind a flag to make collaboration easier, and also to make sure the implementation so far is not unreasonable. This PR does quite a few things:

* Introduce `dyn_star` feature flag
* Adds parsing for `dyn* Trait` types
* Defines `dyn* Trait` as a sized type
* Adds support for explicit casts, like `42usize as dyn* Debug`
  * Including const evaluation of such casts
* Adds codegen for drop glue so things are cleaned up properly when a `dyn* Trait` object goes out of scope
* Adds codegen for method calls, at least for methods that take `&self`

Quite a bit is still missing, but this gives us a starting point. Note that this is never intended to become stable surface syntax for Rust, but rather `dyn*` is planned to be used as an implementation detail for async functions in dyn traits.

Joint work with `@nikomatsakis` and `@compiler-errors.`

Support `#[unix_sigpipe = "inherit|sig_dfl"]` on `fn main()` to prevent ignoring `SIGPIPE`

When enabled, programs don't have to explicitly handle `ErrorKind::BrokenPipe` any longer. Currently, the program

```rust
fn main() { loop { println!("hello world"); } }
```

will print an error if used with a short-lived pipe, e.g.

    % ./main | head -n 1
    hello world
    thread 'main' panicked at 'failed printing to stdout: Broken pipe (os error 32)', library/std/src/io/stdio.rs:1016:9
    note: run with `RUST_BACKTRACE=1` environment variable to display a backtrace

by enabling `#[unix_sigpipe = "sig_dfl"]` like this

```rust
#![feature(unix_sigpipe)]
#[unix_sigpipe = "sig_dfl"]
fn main() { loop { println!("hello world"); } }
```

there is no error, because `SIGPIPE` will not be ignored and thus the program will be killed appropriately:

    % ./main | head -n 1
    hello world

The current libstd behaviour of ignoring `SIGPIPE` before `fn main()` can be explicitly requested by using `#[unix_sigpipe = "sig_ign"]`.

With `#[unix_sigpipe = "inherit"]`, no change at all is made to `SIGPIPE`, which typically means the behaviour will be the same as `#[unix_sigpipe = "sig_dfl"]`.

See https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/62569 and referenced issues for discussions regarding the `SIGPIPE` problem itself

See the [this](https://rust-lang.zulipchat.com/#narrow/stream/219381-t-libs/topic/Proposal.3A.20First.20step.20towards.20solving.20the.20SIGPIPE.20problem) Zulip topic for more discussions, including about this PR.

interpret: make read-pointer-as-bytes a CTFE-only error with extra information

Next step in the reaction to https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/99923. Also teaches Miri to implicitly strip provenance in more situations when transmuting pointers to integers, which fixes https://github.com/rust-lang/miri/issues/2456.

Pointer-to-int transmutation during CTFE now produces a message like this:
```
   = help: this code performed an operation that depends on the underlying bytes representing a pointer
   = help: the absolute address of a pointer is not known at compile-time, so such operations are not supported
```

Since the refactoring in #98930, it is possible to borrow the basic blocks

Replace unnecessary `Body::basic_blocks()` method with a direct field access,
which has an additional benefit of borrowing the basic blocks only.

Add pointer masking convenience functions

This PR adds the following public API:
```rust
impl<T: ?Sized> *const T {
    fn mask(self, mask: usize) -> *const T;
}
impl<T: ?Sized> *mut T {
    fn mask(self, mask: usize) -> *const T;
}
// mod intrinsics
fn mask<T>(ptr: *const T, mask: usize) -> *const T
```
This is equivalent to `ptr.map_addr(|a| a & mask)` but also uses a cool llvm intrinsic.

Replace most uses of `pointer::offset` with `add` and `sub`

As PR title says, it replaces `pointer::offset` in compiler and standard library with `pointer::add` and `pointer::sub`. This generally makes code cleaner, easier to grasp and removes (or, well, hides) integer casts.

This is generally trivially correct, `.offset(-constant)` is just `.sub(constant)`, `.offset(usized as isize)` is just `.add(usized)`, etc. However in some cases we need to be careful with signs of things.

Use constant eval to do strict mem::uninit/zeroed validity checks

I'm not sure about the code organisation here, I just dumped the check in rustc_const_eval at the root. Not hard to move it elsewhere, in any case.

Also, this means cranelift codegen intrinsics lose the strict checks, since they don't seem to depend on rustc_const_eval, and I didn't see a point in keeping around two copies.

I also left comments in the is_zero_valid methods about "uhhh help how do i do this", those apply to both methods equally.

Also rustc_codegen_ssa now depends on rustc_const_eval... is this okay?

Pinging `@RalfJung` since you were the one who mentioned this to me, so I'm assuming you're interested.

Haven't had a chance to run full tests on this since it's really warm, and it's 1AM, I'll check out any failures/comments in the morning :)

89a18cb600 Add unsigned_offset_from on pointers
Like we have `add`/`sub` which are the `usize` version of `offset`, this adds the `usize` equivalent of `offset_from`. Like how `.add(d)` replaced a whole bunch of `.offset(d as isize)`, you can see from the changes here that it's fairly common that code actually knows the order between the pointers and *wants* a `usize`, not an `isize`.

As a bonus, this can do `sub nuw`+`udiv exact`, rather than `sub`+`sdiv exact`, which can be optimized slightly better because it doesn't have to worry about negatives. That's why the slice iterators weren't using `offset_from`, though I haven't updated that code in this PR because slices are so perf-critical that I'll do it as its own change.

This is an intrinsic, like `offset_from`, so that it can eventually be allowed in CTFE. It also allows checking the extra safety condition -- see the test confirming that CTFE catches it if you pass the pointers in the wrong order.

4f008e06c3 Clarify Layout interning.
`Layout` is another type that is sometimes interned, sometimes not, and
we always use references to refer to it so we can't take any advantage
of the uniqueness properties for hashing or equality checks.

This commit renames `Layout` as `LayoutS`, and then introduces a new
`Layout` that is a newtype around an `Interned<LayoutS>`. It also
interns more layouts than before. Previously layouts within layouts
(via the `variants` field) were never interned, but now they are. Hence
the lifetime on the new `Layout` type.

Unlike other interned types, these ones are in `rustc_target` instead of
`rustc_middle`. This reflects the existing structure of the code, which
does layout-specific stuff in `rustc_target` while `TyAndLayout` is
generic over the `Ty`, allowing the type-specific stuff to occur in
`rustc_middle`.

The commit also adds a `HashStable` impl for `Interned`, which was
needed. It hashes the contents, unlike the `Hash` impl which hashes the
pointer.

4852291417 Introduce ConstAllocation.
Currently some `Allocation`s are interned, some are not, and it's very
hard to tell at a use point which is which.

This commit introduces `ConstAllocation` for the known-interned ones,
which makes the division much clearer. `ConstAllocation::inner()` is
used to get the underlying `Allocation`.

In some places it's natural to use an `Allocation`, in some it's natural
to use a `ConstAllocation`, and in some places there's no clear choice.
I've tried to make things look as nice as possible, while generally
favouring `ConstAllocation`, which is the type that embodies more
information. This does require quite a few calls to `inner()`.

The commit also tweaks how `PartialOrd` works for `Interned`. The
previous code was too clever by half, building on `T: Ord` to make the
code shorter. That caused problems with deriving `PartialOrd` and `Ord`
for `ConstAllocation`, so I changed it to build on `T: PartialOrd`,
which is slightly more verbose but much more standard and avoided the
problems.

This now matches `Ty` and `Predicate` more closely, including using

Notable changes:
- `mk_const` now takes a `ConstS`.
- `Const` was copy, despite being 48 bytes. Now `ConstS` is not, so need a
  we need separate arena for it, because we can't use the `Dropless` one any
  more.
- Many `&'tcx Const<'tcx>`/`&Const<'tcx>` to `Const<'tcx>` changes
- Many `ct.ty` to `ct.ty()` and `ct.val` to `ct.val()` changes.

Specifically, change `Region` from this:
```
pub type Region<'tcx> = &'tcx RegionKind;
```
to this:
```
pub struct Region<'tcx>(&'tcx Interned<RegionKind>);
```

This now matches `Ty` and `Predicate` more closely.

Things to note
- Regions have always been interned, but we haven't been using pointer-based
  `Eq` and `Hash`. This is now happening.
- I chose to impl `Deref` for `Region` because it makes pattern matching a lot
  nicer, and `Region` can be viewed as just a smart wrapper for `RegionKind`.
- Various methods are moved from `RegionKind` to `Region`.
- There is a lot of tedious sigil changes.
- A couple of types like `HighlightBuilder`, `RegionHighlightMode` now have a
  `'tcx` lifetime because they hold a `Ty<'tcx>`, so they can call `mk_region`.
- A couple of test outputs change slightly, I'm not sure why, but the new
  outputs are a little better.

e9a0c429c5 Overhaul TyS and Ty.
Specifically, change `Ty` from this:
```
pub type Ty<'tcx> = &'tcx TyS<'tcx>;
```
to this
```
pub struct Ty<'tcx>(Interned<'tcx, TyS<'tcx>>);
```
There are two benefits to this.
- It's now a first class type, so we can define methods on it. This
  means we can move a lot of methods away from `TyS`, leaving `TyS` as a
  barely-used type, which is appropriate given that it's not meant to
  be used directly.
- The uniqueness requirement is now explicit, via the `Interned` type.
  E.g. the pointer-based `Eq` and `Hash` comes from `Interned`, rather
  than via `TyS`, which wasn't obvious at all.

Much of this commit is boring churn. The interesting changes are in
these files:
- compiler/rustc_middle/src/arena.rs
- compiler/rustc_middle/src/mir/visit.rs
- compiler/rustc_middle/src/ty/context.rs
- compiler/rustc_middle/src/ty/mod.rs

Specifically:
- Most mentions of `TyS` are removed. It's very much a dumb struct now;
  `Ty` has all the smarts.
- `TyS` now has `crate` visibility instead of `pub`.
- `TyS::make_for_test` is removed in favour of the static `BOOL_TY`,
  which just works better with the new structure.
- The `Eq`/`Ord`/`Hash` impls are removed from `TyS`. `Interned`s impls
  of `Eq`/`Hash` now suffice. `Ord` is now partly on `Interned`
  (pointer-based, for the `Equal` case) and partly on `TyS`
  (contents-based, for the other cases).
- There are many tedious sigil adjustments, i.e. adding or removing `*`
  or `&`. They seem to be unavoidable.

Store a Symbol instead of an Ident in VariantDef/FieldDef
The field is also renamed from `ident` to `name. In most cases,
we don't actually need the `Span`. A new `ident` method is added
to `VariantDef` and `FieldDef`, which constructs the full `Ident`
using `tcx.def_ident_span()`. This method is used in the cases
where we actually need an `Ident`.

This makes incremental compilation properly track changes
to the `Span`, without all of the invalidations caused by storing
a `Span` directly via an `Ident`.

e2750baf53 Auto merge of #88499 - eddyb:layout-off, r=nagisa
Provide `layout_of` automatically (given tcx + param_env + error handling).

After #88337, there's no longer any uses of `LayoutOf` within `rustc_target` itself, so I realized I could move the trait to `rustc_middle::ty::layout` and redesign it a bit.

This is similar to #88338 (and supersedes it), but at no ergonomic loss, since there's no funky `C: LayoutOf<Ty = Ty>` -> `Ty: TyAbiInterface<C>` generic `impl` chain, and each `LayoutOf` still corresponds to one `impl` (of `LayoutOfHelpers`) for the specific context.

After this PR, this is what's needed to get `trait LayoutOf` (with the `layout_of` method) implemented on some context type:
* `TyCtxt`, via `HasTyCtxt`
* `ParamEnv`, via `HasParamEnv`
* a way to transform `LayoutError`s into the desired error type
  * an error type of `!` can be paired with having `cx.layout_of(...)` return `TyAndLayout` *without* `Result<...>` around it, such as used by codegen
  * this is done through a new `LayoutOfHelpers` trait (and so is specifying the type of `cx.layout_of(...)`)

When going through this path (and not bypassing it with a manual `impl` of `LayoutOf`), the end result is that only the error case can be customized, the query itself and the success paths are guaranteed to be uniform.

(**EDIT**: just noticed that because of the supertrait relationship, you cannot actually implement `LayoutOf` yourself, the blanket `impl` fully covers all possible context types that could ever implement it)

Part of the motivation for this shape of API is that I've been working on querifying `FnAbi::of_*`, and what I want/need to introduce for that looks a lot like the setup in this PR - in particular, it's harder to express the `FnAbi` methods in `rustc_target`, since they're much more tied to `rustc` concepts.

97f2698484 Auto merge of #88363 - michaelwoerister:remapped-diagnostics, r=estebank
Path remapping: Make behavior of diagnostics output dependent on presence of --remap-path-prefix.

This PR fixes a regression (#87745) with `--remap-path-prefix` where the flag stopped causing diagnostic messages to be remapped as well. The regression was introduced in https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/83813 where we erroneously assumed that remapping of diagnostic messages was not desired anymore (because #70642 partially undid that functionality with nobody objecting).

The issue is fixed by making `--remap-path-prefix` remap diagnostic messages again, including for paths that have been remapped in upstream crates (e.g. the standard library). This means that "sysroot-localization" (implemented in #70642) is also disabled if `rustc` is invoked with `--remap-path-prefix`. The assumption is that once someone starts explicitly remapping paths they also don't want paths to their local Rust installation in their build output.

In the future we might want to give more fine-grained control over this behavior via compiler flags (see https://github.com/rust-lang/rfcs/pull/3127 for a related RFC). For now this PR is intended as a regression fix.

This PR is an alternative to https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/88191, which makes diagnostic messages be remapped unconditionally. That approach, however, would effectively revert #70642.

Fixes https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/87745.
