359002bbeb ADD - migrate InvalidTraitItem and AltInvalidTraitItem errors
Thought of doing this by having a struct and an enum with Default and Alt cases, but not sure if we wanted to have the text in code instead of having “demangling()” and “demangling-alt()” in the ftl file.

Don’t like the current way of having structs representing the same-ish and using long names to distinguish their expectations, instead of putting this in an enum and handling the different cases inside the type.

I am fine with whichever option the team prefers; also understand having them as separate structs keeps it simple.

Add fine-grained LLVM CFI support to the Rust compiler

This PR improves the LLVM Control Flow Integrity (CFI) support in the Rust compiler by providing forward-edge control flow protection for Rust-compiled code only by aggregating function pointers in groups identified by their return and parameter types.

Forward-edge control flow protection for C or C++ and Rust -compiled code "mixed binaries" (i.e., for when C or C++ and Rust -compiled code share the same virtual address space) will be provided in later work as part of this project by identifying C char and integer type uses at the time types are encoded (see Type metadata in the design document in the tracking issue https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/89653).

LLVM CFI can be enabled with -Zsanitizer=cfi and requires LTO (i.e., -Clto).

This commit improves the LLVM Control Flow Integrity (CFI) support in

Introduce `-Zvirtual-function-elimination` codegen flag

Fixes #68262

This PR adds a codegen flag `-Zvirtual-function-elimination` to enable the VFE optimization in LLVM. To make this work, additonal  information has to be added to vtables ([`!vcall_visibility` metadata](https://llvm.org/docs/TypeMetadata.html#vcall-visibility-metadata) and a `typeid` of the trait). Furthermore, instead of just `load`ing functions, the [`llvm.type.checked.load` intrinsic](https://llvm.org/docs/LangRef.html#llvm-type-checked-load-intrinsic) has to be used to map functions to vtables.

For technical details of the changes, see the commit messages.

I also tested this flag on https://github.com/tock/tock on different boards to verify that this fixes the issue https://github.com/tock/tock/issues/2594. This flag is able to improve the size of the resulting binary by about 8k-9k bytes by removing the unused debug print functions.

Add typeid_for_trait_ref function
This function computes a Itanium-like typeid for a trait_ref. This is
required for the VFE optimization in LLVM. It is used to map
`llvm.type.checked.load` invocations, that is loading the function from
a vtable, to the vtables this function could be from.

It is important to note that `typeid`s are not unique. So multiple
vtables of the same trait can share `typeid`s.

93e4b6ef06 Rename the ConstS::val field as kind.
And likewise for the `Const::val` method.

Because its type is called `ConstKind`. Also `val` is a confusing name
because `ConstKind` is an enum with seven variants, one of which is
called `Value`. Also, this gives consistency with `TyS` and `PredicateS`
which have `kind` fields.

The commit also renames a few `Const` variables from `val` to `c`, to
avoid confusion with the `ConstKind::Value` variant.

Add EarlyBinder

Chalk has no concept of `Param` (e0ade19d13/chalk-ir/src/lib.rs (L579)) or `ReEarlyBound` (e0ade19d13/chalk-ir/src/lib.rs (L1308)). Everything  is just "bound" - the equivalent of rustc's late-bound. It's not completely clear yet whether to move everything to the same time of binder in rustc or add `Param` and `ReEarlyBound` in Chalk.

Either way, tracking when we have or haven't already substituted out these in rustc can be helpful.

As a first step, I'm just adding a `EarlyBinder` newtype that is required to call `subst`. I also add a couple "transparent" `bound_*` wrappers around a couple query that are often immediately substituted.

- use tcx.hir_crate_items to introduce a tcx.hir().par_items(impl Fn(hir::ItemId)) to traverse all items in parallel;

changes to introduce getter functions. The interesting changes are in

4852291417 Introduce ConstAllocation.
Currently some `Allocation`s are interned, some are not, and it's very
hard to tell at a use point which is which.

This commit introduces `ConstAllocation` for the known-interned ones,
which makes the division much clearer. `ConstAllocation::inner()` is
used to get the underlying `Allocation`.

In some places it's natural to use an `Allocation`, in some it's natural
to use a `ConstAllocation`, and in some places there's no clear choice.
I've tried to make things look as nice as possible, while generally
favouring `ConstAllocation`, which is the type that embodies more
information. This does require quite a few calls to `inner()`.

The commit also tweaks how `PartialOrd` works for `Interned`. The
previous code was too clever by half, building on `T: Ord` to make the
code shorter. That caused problems with deriving `PartialOrd` and `Ord`
for `ConstAllocation`, so I changed it to build on `T: PartialOrd`,
which is slightly more verbose but much more standard and avoided the
problems.

Fix inconsistent symbol mangling of integers constants with -Zverbose

The `PrettyPrinter` changes formatting of array size and integer
constants based on `-Zverbose`, so its implementation cannot be used in
legacy symbol mangling.

Example symbol demangling before changes:

a95fb8b150 Overhaul Const.
Specifically, rename the `Const` struct as `ConstS` and re-introduce `Const` as
this:
```
pub struct Const<'tcx>(&'tcx Interned<ConstS>);
```
This now matches `Ty` and `Predicate` more closely, including using
pointer-based `eq` and `hash`.

Notable changes:
- `mk_const` now takes a `ConstS`.
- `Const` was copy, despite being 48 bytes. Now `ConstS` is not, so need a
  we need separate arena for it, because we can't use the `Dropless` one any
  more.
- Many `&'tcx Const<'tcx>`/`&Const<'tcx>` to `Const<'tcx>` changes
- Many `ct.ty` to `ct.ty()` and `ct.val` to `ct.val()` changes.
- Lots of tedious sigil fiddling.

7024dc523a Overhaul RegionKind and Region.
Specifically, change `Region` from this:
```
pub type Region<'tcx> = &'tcx RegionKind;
```
to this:
```
pub struct Region<'tcx>(&'tcx Interned<RegionKind>);
```

This now matches `Ty` and `Predicate` more closely.

Things to note
- Regions have always been interned, but we haven't been using pointer-based
  `Eq` and `Hash`. This is now happening.
- I chose to impl `Deref` for `Region` because it makes pattern matching a lot
  nicer, and `Region` can be viewed as just a smart wrapper for `RegionKind`.
- Various methods are moved from `RegionKind` to `Region`.
- There is a lot of tedious sigil changes.
- A couple of types like `HighlightBuilder`, `RegionHighlightMode` now have a
  `'tcx` lifetime because they hold a `Ty<'tcx>`, so they can call `mk_region`.
- A couple of test outputs change slightly, I'm not sure why, but the new
  outputs are a little better.

mangling_v0: Skip extern blocks during mangling

There's no need to include the dummy `Nt` into the symbol name, items in extern blocks belong to their parent modules for all purposes except for inheriting the ABI and attributes.

(There's also a drive-by fix to the `rust-demangler` tool's tests, which don't run on CI, I initially attempted using them for testing this PR.)

Ensure that Fingerprint caching respects hashing configuration
Fixes #92266

In some `HashStable` impls, we use a cache to avoid re-computing
the same `Fingerprint` from the same structure (e.g. an `AdtDef`).
However, the `StableHashingContext` used can be configured to
perform hashing in different ways (e.g. skipping `Span`s). This
configuration information is not included in the cache key,
which will cause an incorrect `Fingerprint` to be used if
we hash the same structure with different `StableHashingContext`
settings.

To fix this, the configuration settings of `StableHashingContext`
are split out into a separate `HashingControls` struct. This
struct is used as part of the cache key, ensuring that our caches
always produce the correct result for the given settings.

With this in place, we now turn off `Span` hashing during the
entire process of computing the hash included in legacy symbols.
This current has no effect, but will matter when a future PR
starts hashing more `Span`s that we currently skip.

Replace `-Z symbol-mangling-version=legacy` with
`-Z unstable-options -C symbol-mangling-version=legacy`.

bbf4b6699e Stabilize -Z symbol-mangling-version as -C symbol-mangling-version
This allows selecting `v0` symbol-mangling without an unstable option.
Selecting `legacy` still requires -Z unstable-options.

Continue supporting -Z symbol-mangling-version for compatibility for
now, but show a deprecation warning for it.

8cddcd39ba Remove SymbolStr.
By changing `as_str()` to take `&self` instead of `self`, we can just
return `&str`. We're still lying about lifetimes, but it's a smaller lie
than before, where `SymbolStr` contained a (fake) `&'static str`!

lazily "compute" anon const default substs

Continuing the work of #83086, this implements the discussed solution for the [unused substs problem](https://github.com/rust-lang/project-const-generics/blob/master/design-docs/anon-const-substs.md#unused-substs). As of now, anonymous constants inherit all of their parents generics, even if they do not use them, e.g. in `fn foo<T, const N: usize>() -> [T; N + 1]`, the array length has `T` as a generic parameter even though it doesn't use it. These *unused substs* cause some backwards incompatible, and imo incorrect behavior, e.g. #78369.

We do not actually filter any generic parameters here and the `default_anon_const_substs` query still a dummy which only checks that
- we now prevent the previously existing query cycles and are able to call `predicates_of(parent)` when computing the substs of anonymous constants
- the default anon consts substs only include the typeflags we assume it does.

Implementing that filtering will be left as future work.

The idea of this PR is to delay the creation of the anon const substs until after we've computed `predicates_of` for the parent of the anon const. As the predicates of the parent can however contain the anon const we still have to create a `ty::Const` for it.

We do this by changing the substs field of `ty::Unevaluated` to an option and modifying accesses to instead call the method `unevaluated.substs(tcx)` which returns the substs as before. If the substs - now `substs_` -  of `ty::Unevaluated` are `None`, it means that the anon const currently has its default substs, i.e. the substs it has when first constructed, which are the generic parameters it has available. To be able to call `unevaluated.substs(tcx)` in a `TypeVisitor`, we add the non-defaulted method `fn tcx_for_anon_const_substs(&self) -> Option<TyCtxt<'tcx>>`. In case `tcx_for_anon_const_substs` returns `None`, unknown anon const default substs are skipped entirely.

Even when `substs_` is `None` we still have to treat the constant as if it has its default substs. To do this, `TypeFlags` are modified so that it is clear whether they can still change when *exposing* any anon const default substs. A new flag, `HAS_UNKNOWN_DEFAULT_CONST_SUBSTS`, is added in case some default flags are missing.

The rest of this PR are some smaller changes to either not cause cycles by trying to access the default anon const substs too early or to be able to access the `tcx` in previously unused locations.

Remove Session.used_attrs and move logic to CheckAttrVisitor
Instead of updating global state to mark attributes as used,
we now explicitly emit a warning when an attribute is used in
an unsupported position. As a side effect, we are to emit more
detailed warning messages (instead of just a generic "unused" message).

`Session.check_name` is removed, since its only purpose was to mark
the attribute as used. All of the callers are modified to use
`Attribute.has_name`

Additionally, `AttributeType::AssumedUsed` is removed - an 'assumed
used' attribute is implemented by simply not performing any checks
in `CheckAttrVisitor` for a particular attribute.

We no longer emit unused attribute warnings for the `#[rustc_dummy]`
attribute - it's an internal attribute used for tests, so it doesn't
mark sense to treat it as 'unused'.

With this commit, a large source of global untracked state is removed.

remove it from crates in this repo.

0ce8001a47 Flatten compression caches into symbol mangler
The compression caches currently don't have any dedicated functionality
that would benefit from being separated. Incorporating caches directly
into the symbol manger also avoids dynamic memory allocation.

The symbol mangler, which is often passed by value, is now slightly
larger. This aspect will be addressed by a follow-up commit.
