This bug showed up because the visitor only visited the path of the implemented
trait via walk_path (with no corresponding visit_path function). I have modified
the visitor to use visit_path (which is now overridable), and the privacy
visitor overrides this function and now properly checks for the privacy of all
paths.

I added a test case which does not compile today, and required changes on
privacy's side of things to get right. Additionally, this moves a good bit of
logic which did not belong in reachability into privacy.
All of reachability should solely be responsible for determining what the
reachable surface area of a crate is given the exported surface area (where the
exported surface area is that which is usable by external crates).
Privacy will now correctly figure out what's exported by deeply looking
through reexports. Previously if a module were reexported under another name,
nothing in the module would actually get exported in the executable. I also
consolidated the phases of privacy to be clearer about what's an input to what.
The privacy checking pass no longer uses the notion of an "all public" path, and
the embargo visitor is no longer an input to the checking pass.
Currently the embargo visitor is built as a saturating analysis because it's
unknown what portions of the AST are going to get re-exported.
Previously, the `exported_items` set created by the privacy pass was
incomplete. Specifically, it did not include items that had been defined
at a private path but then `pub use`d at a public path. This commit
finds all crate exports during the privacy pass. Consequently, some code
in the reachable pass and in rustdoc is no longer necessary. This commit
then removes the separate `MissingDocLintVisitor` lint pass, opting to
check missing_doc lint in the same pass as the other lint checkers using
the visibility result computed by the privacy pass.
Fixes#9777.
This stops labeling everything as "is private" when in fact the destination may
be public. Instead, the clause "is inaccessible" is used and the private part of
the flag is called out with a "is private" message.

This fixes a bug in which the visibility rules were approximated by
reachability, but forgot to cover the case where a 'pub use' reexports a private
item. This fixes the commit by instead using the results of the privacy pass of
the compiler to create the initial working set of the reachability pass.
This may have the side effect of increasing the size of metadata, but it's
difficult to avoid for correctness purposes sadly.

This commit is the culmination of my recent effort to refine Rust's notion of
privacy and visibility among crates. The major goals of this commit were to
remove privacy checking from resolve for the sake of sane error messages, and to
attempt a much more rigid and well-tested implementation of visibility
throughout rust. The implemented rules for name visibility are:
1. Everything pub from the root namespace is visible to anyone
2. You may access any private item of your ancestors.
"Accessing a private item" depends on what the item is, so for a function this
means that you can call it, but for a module it means that you can look inside
of it. Once you look inside a private module, any accessed item must be "pub
from the root" where the new root is the private module that you looked into.
These rules required some more analysis results to get propagated from trans to
privacy in the form of a few hash tables.
I added a new test in which my goal was to showcase all of the privacy nuances
of the language, and I hope to place any new bugs into this file to prevent
regressions.
Overall, I was unable to completely remove the notion of privacy from resolve.
One use of privacy is for dealing with glob imports. Essentially a glob import
can only import *public* items from the destination, and because this must be
done at namespace resolution time, resolve must maintain the notion of "what
items are public in a module". There are some sad approximations of privacy, but
I unfortunately can't see clear methods to extract them outside.
The other use case of privacy in resolve now is one that must stick around
regardless of glob imports. When dealing with privacy, checking a private path
needs to know "what the last private thing was" when looking at a path. Resolve
is the only compiler pass which knows the answer to this question, so it
maintains the answer on a per-path resolution basis (works similarly to the
def_map generated).

This fixes private statics and functions from being usable cross-crates, along
with some bad privacy error messages. This is a reopening of #8365 with all the
privacy checks in privacy.rs instead of resolve.rs (where they should be
anyway).
These maps of exported items will hopefully get used for generating
documentation by rustdoc

This removes the stacking of type parameters that occurs when invoking
trait methods, and fixes all places in the standard library that were
relying on it. It is somewhat awkward in places; I think we'll probably
want something like the `Foo::<for T>::new()` syntax.
This requires changes to method search and to codegen. We now emit a
vtable for objects that includes methods from all supertraits.
Closes#4100.
Also, actually populate the cache for vtables, and also key it by type
so that it actually works.
to favor inherent methods over extension methods.
The reason to favor inherent methods is that otherwise an impl
like
impl Foo for @Foo { fn method(&self) { self.method() } }
causes infinite recursion. The current change to favor inherent methods is
rather hacky; the method resolution code is in need of a refactoring.
- Made naming schemes consistent between Option, Result and Either
- Changed Options Add implementation to work like the maybe monad (return None if any of the inputs is None)
- Removed duplicate Option::get and renamed all related functions to use the term `unwrap` instead
This is preparation for removing `@fn`.
This does *not* use default methods yet, because I don't know
whether they work. If they do, a forthcoming PR will use them.
This also changes the precedence of `as`.

.times() cannot be broken with `break` or `return` anymore; for those
cases, use a numerical range loop instead.

number of allocations performed for operations involving attributes/
meta items:
- Converts ast::meta_item & ast::attribute and other associated enums
to CamelCase.
- Converts several standalone functions in syntax::attr into methods,
defined on two traits AttrMetaMethods & AttributeMethods. The former
is common to both MetaItem and Attribute since the latter is a thin
wrapper around the former.
- Deletes functions that are unnecessary due to iterators.
- Converts other standalone functions to use iterators and the generic
AttrMetaMethods rather than allocating a lot of new vectors (e.g. the
old code would have to allocate a new vector to use functions that
operated on &[meta_item] on &[attribute].)
- Moves the core algorithm of the #[cfg] matching to syntax::attr,
similar to find_inline_attr and find_linkage_metas.
This doesn't have much of an effect on the speed of #[cfg] stripping,
despite hugely reducing the number of allocations performed; presumably
most of the time is spent in the ast folder rather than doing attribute
checks.
Also fixes the Eq instance of MetaItem_ to correctly ignore spans, so
that `rustc --cfg 'foo(bar)'` now works.

Mostly just low-haning fruit, i.e. function arguments that were @ even
though & would work just as well.
Reduces librustc.so size by 200k when compiling without -O, by 100k when
compiling with -O.
I removed the `static-method-test.rs` test because it was heavily based
on `BaseIter` and there are plenty of other more complex uses of static
methods anyway.
The removed test for issue #2611 is well covered by the `std::iterator`
module itself.
This adds the `count` method to `IteratorUtil` to replace `EqIter`.
This almost removes the StringRef wrapper, since all strings are
Equiv-alent now. Removes a lot of `/* bad */ copy *`'s, and converts
several things to be &'static str (the lint table and the intrinsics
table).
There are many instances of .to_managed(), unfortunately.
Removes a lot of instances of `/*bad*/ copy` throughout libsyntax/librustc. On the plus side, this shaves about 2s off of the runtime when compiling `librustc` with optimizations.
Ideally I would have run a profiler to figure out which copies are the most critical to remove, but in reality there was a liberal amount of `git grep`s along with some spot checking and removing the easy ones.
Add a new method_super origin for supertrait methods. Also make
coherence create a table that maps pairs of trait IDs and self types
to impl IDs, so that it's possible to check a supertrait method
knowing only its index in its trait's methods (without knowing all
supertraits for a given trait).
r=nmatsakis and graydon -- with hope, we'll revamp all of this code as
per #4678, but for now this fixes the bug.

If an enum type's only variant is private, disallow dereferencing
values of its type.
Due to #4082, this only applies to enums that are in the same crate.
