a9c1152c4b std: Add a new top-level thread_local module
This commit removes the `std::local_data` module in favor of a new
`std::thread_local` module providing thread local storage. The module provides
two variants of TLS: one which owns its contents and one which is based on
scoped references. Each implementation has pros and cons listed in the
documentation.

Both flavors have accessors through a function called `with` which yield a
reference to a closure provided. Both flavors also panic if a reference cannot
be yielded and provide a function to test whether an access would panic or not.
This is an implementation of [RFC 461][rfc] and full details can be found in
that RFC.

This is a breaking change due to the removal of the `std::local_data` module.
All users can migrate to the new thread local system like so:

    thread_local!(static FOO: Rc<RefCell<Option<T>>> = Rc::new(RefCell::new(None)))

The old `local_data` module inherently contained the `Rc<RefCell<Option<T>>>` as
an implementation detail which must now be explicitly stated by users.

593af6213f rollup merge of #19234: P1start/rustdoc-misc
This PR:

- makes rustdoc colour trait methods like other functions in search results;
- makes rustdoc display `extern crate` statements with the new `as` syntax instead of the old `=` syntax;
- changes rustdoc to list constants and statics in a way that is more similar to functions and modules and show their full definition and documentation on their own page, fixing #19046:

b21b48062f rollup merge of #19194: aturon/stab-ascii
This is an initial API stabilization pass for `std::ascii`. Aside from
some renaming to match conversion conventions, and deprecations in favor
of using iterators directly, almost nothing is changed here. However,
the static case conversion tables that were previously public are now private.

The stabilization of the (rather large!) set of extension traits is left
to a follow-up pass, because we hope to land some more general machinery
that will provide the same functionality without custom traits.

* Deprecate the free functions in favor of methods, except the two ctors `from_u32` and `from_digit`, whose methods are deprecated.
* Mark the `Char` and `UnicodeChar` traits experimental until we decide for sure that we won't have some sort of inherent methods for primitives.
* The `UnicodeChar` methods related to numerics are now called e.g. `is_numeric` to match the 'numeric' unicode character class, and the `*_digit_radix` methods on `Char` now just called `*_digit`.
* `len_utf8_bytes` -> `len_utf8`
* Converted methods to take self by-value
* Converted `escape_default` and `escape_unicode` to iterators over chars.
* Renamed `is_XID_start`, `is_XID_continue` to `is_xid_start`, `is_xid_continue` to match conventions

This also converts `encode_utf8` and `encode_utf16` to return iterators. I suspect this is not the final form of these methods. Perf is worse (numbers in the commit). Many of the uses ended up being awkward, copying into a buffer then writing that buffer to a `Writer`. It might be more appropriate for these to return `Reader`s instead, but that type is defined in `std`.

Note: although I *did* add the `from_u32` ctor to the `Char` trait, I deprecated it again later, preferring the free ctors.

I've been sitting on this for a while.

f71b852d38 rollup merge of #19103: huonw/literal-suffixes
Futureproof Rust for fancier suffixed literals. The Rust compiler tokenises a literal followed immediately (no whitespace) by an identifier as a single token: (for example) the text sequences `"foo"bar`, `1baz` and `1u1024` are now a single token rather than the pairs `"foo"` `bar`, `1` `baz` and `1u` `1024` respectively.

The compiler rejects all such suffixes in the parser, except for the 12 numeric suffixes we have now.

I'm fairly sure this will affect very few programs, since it's not currently legal to have `<literal><identifier>` in a Rust program, except in a macro invocation. Any macro invocation relying on this behaviour can simply separate the two tokens with whitespace: `foo!("bar"baz)` becomes `foo!("bar" baz)`.

This implements [RFC 463](https://github.com/rust-lang/rfcs/blob/master/text/0463-future-proof-literal-suffixes.md), and so closes https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/19088.

This commit applies the stabilization of std::fmt as outlined in [RFC 380][rfc].
There are a number of breaking changes as a part of this commit which will need
to be handled to migrated old code:

* A number of formatting traits have been removed: String, Bool, Char, Unsigned,
  Signed, and Float. It is recommended to instead use Show wherever possible or
  to use adaptor structs to implement other methods of formatting.

* The format specifier for Boolean has changed from `t` to `b`.

* The enum `FormatError` has been renamed to `Error` as well as becoming a unit
  struct instead of an enum. The `WriteError` variant no longer exists.

* The `format_args_method!` macro has been removed with no replacement. Alter
  code to use the `format_args!` macro instead.

* The public fields of a `Formatter` have become read-only with no replacement.
  Use a new formatting string to alter the formatting flags in combination with
  the `write!` macro. The fields can be accessed through accessor methods on the
  `Formatter` structure.

Other than these breaking changes, the contents of std::fmt should now also all
contain stability markers. Most of them are still #[unstable] or #[experimental]

6679595853 Parse and store suffixes on literals.
This adds an optional suffix at the end of a literal token:
`"foo"bar`. An actual use of a suffix in a expression (or other literal
that the compiler reads) is rejected in the parser.

This doesn't switch the handling of numbers to this system, and doesn't
outlaw illegal suffixes for them yet.

85c2c2e38c implement Writer for Vec<u8>
The trait has an obvious, sensible implementation directly on vectors so
the MemWriter wrapper is unnecessary. This will halt the trend towards
providing all of the vector methods on MemWriter along with eliminating
the noise caused by conversions between the two types. It also provides
the useful default Writer methods on Vec<u8>.

After the type is removed and code has been migrated, it would make
sense to add a new implementation of MemWriter with seeking support. The
simple use cases can be covered with vectors alone, and ones with the
need for seeks can use a new MemWriter implementation.

3dcd215740 Switch to purely namespaced enums
This breaks code that referred to variant names in the same namespace as
their enum. Reexport the variants in the old location or alter code to
refer to the new locations:

6f7081fad5 auto merge of #18827 : bjz/rust/rfc369-numerics, r=alexcrichton
This implements a considerable portion of rust-lang/rfcs#369 (tracked in #18640). Some interpretations had to be made in order to get this to work. The breaking changes are listed below:

[breaking-change]

- `core::num::{Num, Unsigned, Primitive}` have been deprecated and their re-exports removed from the `{std, core}::prelude`.
- `core::num::{Zero, One, Bounded}` have been deprecated. Use the static methods on `core::num::{Float, Int}` instead. There is no equivalent to `Zero::is_zero`. Use `(==)` with `{Float, Int}::zero` instead.
- `Signed::abs_sub` has been moved to `std::num::FloatMath`, and is no longer implemented for signed integers.
- `core::num::Signed` has been removed, and its methods have been moved to `core::num::Float` and a new trait, `core::num::SignedInt`. The methods now take the `self` parameter by value.
- `core::num::{Saturating, CheckedAdd, CheckedSub, CheckedMul, CheckedDiv}` have been removed, and their methods moved to `core::num::Int`. Their parameters are now taken by value. This means that
- `std::time::Duration` no longer implements `core::num::{Zero, CheckedAdd, CheckedSub}` instead defining the required methods non-polymorphically.
- `core::num::{zero, one, abs, signum}` have been deprecated. Use their respective methods instead.
- The `core::num::{next_power_of_two, is_power_of_two, checked_next_power_of_two}` functions have been deprecated in favor of methods defined a new trait, `core::num::UnsignedInt`
- `core::iter::{AdditiveIterator, MultiplicativeIterator}` are now only implemented for the built-in numeric types.
- `core::iter::{range, range_inclusive, range_step, range_step_inclusive}` now require `core::num::Int` to be implemented for the type they a re parametrized over.

fcd05ed99f time: Deprecate the library in the distribution
This commit deprecates the entire libtime library in favor of the
externally-provided libtime in the rust-lang organization. Users of the
`libtime` crate as-is today should add this to their Cargo manifests:

    [dependencies.time]
    git = "https://github.com/rust-lang/time"

To implement this transition, a new function `Duration::span` was added to the
`std::time::Duration` time. This function takes a closure and then returns the
duration of time it took that closure to execute. This interface will likely
improve with `FnOnce` unboxed closures as moving in and out will be a little
easier.

Due to the deprecation of the in-tree crate, this is a:

cc #18855, some of the conversions in the `src/test/bench` area may have been a
little nicer with that implemented

6b130e3dd9 Implement flexible target specification
Removes all target-specific knowledge from rustc. Some targets have changed
during this, but none of these should be very visible outside of
cross-compilation. The changes make our targets more consistent.

iX86-unknown-linux-gnu is now only available as i686-unknown-linux-gnu. We
used to accept any value of X greater than 1. i686 was released in 1995, and
should encompass the bare minimum of what Rust supports on x86 CPUs.

The only two windows targets are now i686-pc-windows-gnu and
x86_64-pc-windows-gnu.

The iOS target has been renamed from arm-apple-ios to arm-apple-darwin.

A complete list of the targets we accept now:

have changed, and now require one less level of indirection. Change your code
from:

936d999b52 Use common variants for open and close delimiters
This common representation for delimeters should make pattern matching easier. Having a separate `token::DelimToken` enum also allows us to enforce the invariant that the opening and closing delimiters must be the same in `ast::TtDelimited`, removing the need to ensure matched delimiters when working with token trees.

7828c3dd28 Rename fail! to panic!

The current terminology of "task failure" often causes problems when
writing or speaking about code. You often want to talk about the
possibility of an operation that returns a Result "failing", but cannot
because of the ambiguity with task failure. Instead, you have to speak
of "the failing case" or "when the operation does not succeed" or other
circumlocutions.

Likewise, we use a "Failure" header in rustdoc to describe when
operations may fail the task, but it would often be helpful to separate
out a section describing the "Err-producing" case.

We have been steadily moving away from task failure and toward Result as
an error-handling mechanism, so we should optimize our terminology
accordingly: Result-producing functions should be easy to describe.

To update your code, rename any call to `fail!` to `panic!` instead.
Assuming you have not created your own macro named `panic!`, this
will work on UNIX based systems:

    grep -lZR 'fail!' . | xargs -0 -l sed -i -e 's/fail!/panic!/g'

You can of course also do this by hand.

9d5d97b55d Remove a large amount of deprecated functionality
Spring cleaning is here! In the Fall! This commit removes quite a large amount
of deprecated functionality from the standard libraries. I tried to ensure that
only old deprecated functionality was removed.

This is removing lots and lots of deprecated features, so this is a breaking
change. Please consult the deprecation messages of the deleted code to see how
to migrate code forward if it still needs migration.

The relevant changes are in `rustc::metadata::{decoder, encoder}` and `rustc::middle::ty`.

A test case is included.

The problem is that the expressoin `UnitStruct` is an `ExprPath` to an `DefFn`, which is of expr kind `RvalueDatumExpr`, but for unit-struct ctors the expr kind should be `RvalueDpsExpr`. I fixed this (in a I guess clean way) by introducing `CtorFn` in the metadata and including a `is_ctor` flag in `DefFn`.

065a5b0424 Fixes ICE when using reexported unit-like structs
Fixes that unit-like structs cannot be used if they are reexported and
used in another crate. The compiler fails with an ICE, because unit-like
structs are exported as DefFn and the expression `UnitStruct` is
interpreted as function pointer instead of a call to the constructor.

To resolve this ambiguity tuple-like struct constructors are now exported
as CtorFn. When `rustc::metadata::decoder` finds a CtorFn it sets a new
flag `is_ctor` in DefFn to true.

Relevant changes are in `rustc::metadata::{encoder, decoder}` and in
`rustc::middle::ty`.

Closes #12660 and #16973.

This is the bare minimum to stop using split stacks on Windows, fixing https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/13259 and #14742, by turning on stack probes for all functions and disabling compiler and runtime support for split stacks on Windows.

It does not restore the out-of-stack error message, which requires more runtime work.

This includes a test that the Windows TCB is no longer being clobbered, but the out-of-stack test itself is pretty weak, only testing that the program exits abnormally, not that it isn't writing to bogus memory, so I haven't truly verified that this is providing the safety we claim.

A more complete solution is in https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/16388, which has some unresolved issues yet.

Deprecates the `find_or_*` family of "internal mutation" methods on `HashMap` in
favour of the "external mutation" Entry API as part of RFC 60. Part of #17320,
but this still needs to be done on the rest of the maps. However they don't have
any internal mutation methods defined, so they can be done without deprecating
or breaking anything. Work on `BTree` is part of the complete rewrite in #17334.

The implemented API deviates from the API described in the RFC in two key places:

* `VacantEntry.set` yields a mutable reference to the inserted element to avoid code
duplication where complex logic needs to be done *regardless* of whether the entry
was vacant or not.
* `OccupiedEntry.into_mut` was added so that it is possible to return a reference
into the map beyond the lifetime of the Entry itself, providing functional parity
to `VacantEntry.set`.

This allows the full find_or_insert functionality to be implemented using this API.
A PR will be submitted to the RFC to amend this.

d2b30f7d38 rustdoc: Prevent infinite recursion when inlining
Cyclic pub-use chains triggered infinite recursion, and this commit adds a hash
set to guard against cyclic recursion. This will cause one of the reexports to
render as a `pub use` instead of inlining the documentation.

Change to resolve and update compiler and libs for uses.

Enum variants are now in both the value and type namespaces. This means that
if you have a variant with the same name as a type in scope in a module, you
will get a name clash and thus an error. The solution is to either rename the
type or the variant.

467bea04fa librustc: Forbid inherent implementations that aren't adjacent to the
type they provide an implementation for.

This breaks code like:

    mod foo {
        struct Foo { ... }
    }

    impl foo::Foo {
        ...
    }

Change this code to:

    mod foo {
        struct Foo { ... }

        impl Foo {
            ...
        }
    }

Additionally, if you used the I/O path extension methods `stat`,
`lstat`, `exists`, `is_file`, or `is_dir`, note that these methods have
been moved to the the `std::io::fs::PathExtensions` trait. This breaks
code like:

    fn is_it_there() -> bool {
        Path::new("/foo/bar/baz").exists()
    }

Change this code to:

    use std::io::fs::PathExtensions;

    fn is_it_there() -> bool {
        Path::new("/foo/bar/baz").exists()
    }

4bea7b3ed0 auto merge of #16367 : epdtry/rust/parallel-codegen, r=alexcrichton
This branch adds support for running LLVM optimization and codegen on different parts of a crate in parallel.  Instead of translating the crate into a single LLVM compilation unit, `rustc` now distributes items in the crate among several compilation units, and spawns worker threads to optimize and codegen each compilation unit independently.  This improves compile times on multicore machines, at the cost of worse performance in the compiled code.  The intent is to speed up build times during development without sacrificing too much optimization.

On the machine I tested this on, `librustc` build time with `-O` went from 265 seconds (master branch, single-threaded) to 115s (this branch, with 4 threads), a speedup of 2.3x.  For comparison, the build time without `-O` was 90s (single-threaded).  Bootstrapping `rustc` using 4 threads gets a 1.6x speedup over the default settings (870s vs. 1380s), and building `librustc` with the resulting stage2 compiler takes 1.3x as long as the master branch (44s vs.  55s, single threaded, ignoring time spent in LLVM codegen).

The user-visible changes from this branch are two new codegen flags:

 * `-C codegen-units=N`: Distribute items across `N` compilation units.
 * `-C codegen-threads=N`: Spawn `N` worker threads for running optimization and codegen.  (It is possible to set `codegen-threads` larger than `codegen-units`, but this is not very useful.)

Internal changes to the compiler are described in detail on the individual commit messages.

Note: The first commit on this branch is copied from #16359, which this branch depends on.

de7abd8824 Unify non-snake-case lints and non-uppercase statics lints
This unifies the `non_snake_case_functions` and `uppercase_variables` lints
into one lint, `non_snake_case`. It also now checks for non-snake-case modules.
This also extends the non-camel-case types lint to check type parameters, and
merges the `non_uppercase_pattern_statics` lint into the
`non_uppercase_statics` lint.

Because the `uppercase_variables` lint is now part of the `non_snake_case`
lint, all non-snake-case variables that start with lowercase characters (such
as `fooBar`) will now trigger the `non_snake_case` lint.

New code should be updated to use the new `non_snake_case` lint instead of the
previous `non_snake_case_functions` and `uppercase_variables` lints. All use of
the `non_uppercase_pattern_statics` should be replaced with the
`non_uppercase_statics` lint. Any code that previously contained non-snake-case
module or variable names should be updated to use snake case names or disable
the `non_snake_case` lint. Any code with non-camel-case type parameters should
be changed to use camel case or disable the `non_camel_case_types` lint.

[breaking-change]

1. The internal layout for traits has changed from (vtable, data) to (data, vtable). If you were relying on this in unsafe transmutes, you might get some very weird and apparently unrelated errors. You should not be doing this! Prefer not to do this at all, but if you must, you should use raw::TraitObject rather than hardcoding rustc's internal representation into your code.

2. The minimal type of reference-to-vec-literals (e.g., `&[1, 2, 3]`) is now a fixed size vec (e.g., `&[int, ..3]`) where it used to be an unsized vec (e.g., `&[int]`). If you want the unszied type, you must explicitly give the type (e.g., `let x: &[_] = &[1, 2, 3]`). Note in particular where multiple blocks must have the same type (e.g., if and else clauses, vec elements), the compiler will not coerce to the unsized type without a hint. E.g., `[&[1], &[1, 2]]` used to be a valid expression of type '[&[int]]'. It no longer type checks since the first element now has type `&[int, ..1]` and the second has type &[int, ..2]` which are incompatible.

3. The type of blocks (including functions) must be coercible to the expected type (used to be a subtype). Mostly this makes things more flexible and not less (in particular, in the case of coercing function bodies to the return type). However, in some rare cases, this is less flexible. TBH, I'm not exactly sure of the exact effects. I think the change causes us to resolve inferred type variables slightly earlier which might make us slightly more restrictive. Possibly it only affects blocks with unreachable code. E.g., `if ... { fail!(); "Hello" }` used to type check, it no longer does. The fix is to add a semicolon after the string.

9907fa4acc librustc: Stop assuming that implementations and traits only contain
methods.

This paves the way to associated items by introducing an extra level of
abstraction ("impl-or-trait item") between traits/implementations and
methods. This new abstraction is encoded in the metadata and used
throughout the compiler where appropriate.

There are no functional changes; this is purely a refactoring.

0dc215741b Fixes missing overflow lint for i64 #14269
The `type_overflow` lint, doesn't catch the overflow for `i64` because
the overflow happens earlier in the parse phase when the `u64` as biggest
possible int gets casted to `i64` , without checking the for overflows.
We can't lint in the parse phase, so a refactoring of the `LitInt` type
was necessary.

The types `LitInt`, `LitUint` and `LitIntUnsuffixed` where merged to one
type `LitInt` which stores it's value as `u64`. An additional parameter was
added which indicate the signedness of the type and the sign of the value.

This is something that's been bothering me, and I've seen some people mention in IRC before. The docs are *great* if you want a full in-depth look at an API, but *awful* if you want to scan them. This provides the ability to toggle complexity freely. Interacts perfectly well with noscript, since the static page is effectively unchanged. Collapsing is just hiding divs with css.

I'm not much of a designer, so design input welcome on the actual UX for toggling.

The actual javascript is *a bit* brittle to layout changes, but it always will be without adding lots of extra junk to the actual markup, which didn't seem worth it.

This enables the docs search function to be more forgiving for spelling mistakes. The algorithm works as a dynamic programming algorithm to detect the minimum number of changes required to the search parameter string in order to match any string in the search index. If the number of changes is less then a threshold (currently defined as 3), then the search parameter will be included as it is a possible misspelling of the word. Any results returned by the algorithm are sorted by distance and are ranked lower than results that are partial or exact matches (aka the matches returned by the original search algorithm). Additionally, the increment in the for loops in this file were using one of three different ways to increment (`i += 1` `i++` and `++i`) so I just standardized it to `++i`.

As an example, consider searching for the word `String` and accidentally typing in `Strnig`. The old system would return no results because it is a misspelling, but the Levenshtein distance between these two inputs is only two, which means that this will return `String` as a result. Additionally, it will return a few other results such as `strong`, and `StdRng` because these are also similar to `Strnig`. Because of the ranking system though, this change should be unobtrusive to anyone that spells the words correctly, as those are still ranked first before any Levenshtein results.

80efb220e0 rustdoc: Bind keydown instead of keypress for nav
Apparently keypress doesn't quite work in all browsers due to some not invoking
the handler and jquery not setting the right `which` field in all circumstances.
According to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2166771 switching over to
`keydown` works and it appears to do the trick. Tested in Safari, Firefox, and
Chrome.

This eliminates the last vestige of the `~` syntax.

Instead of `~self`, write `self: Box<TypeOfSelf>`; instead of `mut
~self`, write `mut self: Box<TypeOfSelf>`, replacing `TypeOfSelf` with
the self-type parameter as specified in the implementation.

1607064cfe repair macro docs
In f1ad425199, I changed the handling
of macros, to prevent macro invocations from occurring in fully expanded
source. Instead, I added a side table. It contained only the
spans of the macros, because this was the only information required
in order to make macro export work.

However, librustdoc was also affected by this change, since it
extracts macro information in a similar way. As a result of the earlier
change, exported macros were no longer documented.

In order to repair this, I've adjusted the side table to contain whole
items, rather than just the spans.

357d5cd96c librustc: Implement the fully-expanded, UFCS form of explicit self.
This makes two changes to region inference: (1) it allows region
inference to relate early-bound regions; and (2) it allows regions to be
related before variance runs. The former is needed because there is no
relation between the two regions before region substitution happens,
while the latter is needed because type collection has to run before
variance. We assume that, before variance is inferred, that lifetimes
are invariant. This is a conservative overapproximation.

This relates to #13885. This does not remove `~self` from the language
yet, however.

This patch adds support for macros in method position. It follows roughly the template for Item macros, where an outer `Method` wrapper contains a `Method_` enum which can either be a macro invocation or a standard macro definition. 

One note; adding support for macros that expand into multiple methods is not included here, but should be a simple parser change, since this patch updates the type of fold_macro to return a smallvector of methods.

For reviewers, please pay special attention to the parser changes; these are the ones I'm most concerned about.

b0b4b3122a refactor Method definition to make space for macros
This change propagates to many locations, but because of the
Macro Exterminator (or, more properly, the invariant that it
protects), macro invocations can't occur downstream of expansion.
This means that in librustc and librustdoc, extracting the
desired field can simply assume that it can't be a macro
invocation. Functions in ast_util abstract over this check.

This is a continuation of @brson's work from https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/12144.

This implements the minimal scaffolding that allows mapping diagnostic messages to alpha-numeric codes, which could improve the searchability of errors. In addition, there's a new compiler option, `--explain {code}` which takes an error code and prints out a somewhat detailed explanation of the error. Example:

I've refrained from migrating many errors to actually use the new macros as it can be done in an incremental fashion but if we're happy with the approach, it'd be good to do all of them sooner rather than later.

Originally, I was going to make libdiagnostics a separate crate but that's posing some interesting challenges with semi-circular dependencies. In particular, librustc would have a plugin-phase dependency on libdiagnostics, which itself depends on librustc. Per my conversation with @alexcrichton, it seems like the snapshotting process would also have to change. So for now the relevant modules from libdiagnostics are included using `#[path = ...] mod`.

bfa853f8ed io::process::Command: add fine-grained env builder
This commit changes the `io::process::Command` API to provide
fine-grained control over the environment:

* The `env` method now inserts/updates a key/value pair.
* The `env_remove` method removes a key from the environment.
* The old `env` method, which sets the entire environment in one shot,
  is renamed to `env_set_all`. It can be used in conjunction with the
  finer-grained methods. This renaming is a breaking change.

To support these new methods, the internal `env` representation for
`Command` has been changed to an optional `HashMap` holding owned
`CString`s (to support non-utf8 data). The `HashMap` is only
materialized if the environment is updated. The implementation does not
try hard to avoid allocation, since the cost of launching a process will
dwarf any allocation cost.

This patch also adds `PartialOrd`, `Eq`, and `Hash` implementations for
`CString`.

This removes a bunch of token types. Tokens now store the original, unaltered
numeric literal (that is still checked for correctness), which is parsed into

19e718b34d carry self ident forward through re-parsing
formerly, the self identifier was being discarded during parsing, which
stymies hygiene. The best fix here seems to be to attach a self identifier
to ExplicitSelf_, a change that rippled through the rest of the compiler,
but without any obvious damage.

This updates https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/15075.

Rename `ToStr::to_str` to `ToString::to_string`. The naive renaming ends up with two `to_string` functions defined on strings in the prelude (the other defined via `collections::str::StrAllocating`). To remedy this I removed `StrAllocating::to_string`, making all conversions from `&str` to `String` go through `Show`. This has a measurable impact on the speed of this conversion, but the sense I get from others is that it's best to go ahead and unify `to_string` and address performance for all `to_string` conversions in `core::fmt`. `String::from_str(...)` still works as a manual fast-path.

Note that the patch was done with a script, and ended up renaming a number of other `*_to_str` functions, particularly inside of rustc. All the ones I saw looked correct, and I didn't notice any additional API breakage.

50ee1ec1b4 rustc: Remove CrateId and all related support
This commit removes all support in the compiler for the #[crate_id] attribute
and all of its derivative infrastructure. A list of the functionality removed is:

* The #[crate_id] attribute no longer exists
* There is no longer the concept of a version of a crate
* Version numbers are no longer appended to symbol names
* The --crate-id command line option has been removed

To migrate forward, rename #[crate_id] to #[crate_name] and only the name of the
crate itself should be mentioned. The version/path of the old crate id should be
removed.

For a transitionary state, the #[crate_id] attribute is still accepted if
the #[crate_name] is not present, but it is warned about if it is the only
identifier present.

952dded81a Refactored VecPerParamSpace to hide exposure of Vec representation.
This basically meant changing the interface so that no borrowed `&Vec`
is exposed, by hiding `fn get_vec` and `fn get_mut_vec` and revising
`fn all_vecs`.

Instead, clients should use one of the other methods; `get_slice`,
`pop`, `truncate`, `replace`, `push_all`, or `is_empty_in`, which
should work for any case currently used in rustc.

e38cb972dc Simplify PatIdent to contain an Ident rather than a Path
Rationale: for what appear to be historical reasons only, the PatIdent contains
a Path rather than an Ident.  This means that there are many places in the code
where an ident is artificially promoted to a path, and---much more problematically---
a bunch of elements from a path are simply thrown away, which seems like an invitation
to some really nasty bugs.

256df5e3df rustdoc: incorporate stability index throughout
This commit hooks rustdoc into the stability index infrastructure in two
ways:

1. It looks up stability levels via the index, rather than by manual
attributes.

2. It adds stability level information throughout rustdoc output, rather
than just at the top header. In particular, a stability color (with
mouseover text) appears next to essentially every item that appears
in rustdoc's HTML output.

Along the way, the stability index code has been lightly refactored.

* ~~The `encode` shortcut function does the same as the `Encoder::str_encode` function. It seems wrong to me that two functions do exactly the same. Should we deprecate `Encoder::str_encode`?~~
* ~~Do we really want the ToJson trait for tuples? At the moment we have it for (), (A, B), (A, B, C). I would like to remove them.~~
* ~~We are using `String` as key in the `TreeMap` representing a `Json` object. It would be better to use `&str`, but this would require to annotate lots of lifetimes. Is there any easy solution for this?~~
* There is a lot of duplicated code (`PrettyEncoder` copies about 50 lines from `Encoder`). In an OO language this could be solved very elegantly by using inheritance and overriding. What can we do here to reduce the amount of boilerplate?

Closes #14358.

~~The tests are not yet moved to `utf16_iter`, so this probably won't compile. I'm submitting this PR anyway so it can be reviewed and since it was mentioned in #14611.~~ EDIT: Tests now use `utf16_iter`.

This deprecates `.to_utf16`. `x.to_utf16()` should be replaced by either `x.utf16_iter().collect::<Vec<u16>>()` (the type annotation may be optional), or just `x.utf16_iter()` directly, if it can be used in an iterator context.

This makes the `in-header`, `markdown-before-content`, and `markdown-after-content` options available to `rustdoc` when generating documentation for any crate.

Before, these options were only available when creating documentation *from* markdown. Now, they are available when generating documentation from source.

This also updates the `rustdoc -h` output to reflect these changes. It does not update the `man rustdoc` page, nor does it update the documentation in [the `rustdoc` manual](http://doc.rust-lang.org/rustdoc.html).

a5bb0a3a45 librustc: Remove the fallback to int for integers and f64 for
floating point numbers for real.

This will break code that looks like:

    let mut x = 0;
    while ... {
        x += 1;
    }
    println!("{}", x);

Change that code to:

    let mut x = 0i;
    while ... {
        x += 1;
    }
    println!("{}", x);

Closes #15201.
