fmt::Show is for debugging, and can and should be implemented for
all public types. This trait is used with `{:?}` syntax. There still
exists #[derive(Show)].
fmt::String is for types that faithfully be represented as a String.
Because of this, there is no way to derive fmt::String, all
implementations must be purposeful. It is used by the default format
syntax, `{}`.
This will break most instances of `{}`, since that now requires the type
to impl fmt::String. In most cases, replacing `{}` with `{:?}` is the
correct fix. Types that were being printed specifically for users should
receive a fmt::String implementation to fix this.

While talking on IRC, someone wanted to post a link to the Rust source code, but while the lines of the rendered source code do have anchors (`<span id="[line number]">`), there is no convenient way to make links as they are not clickable. This PR makes them clickable.
Also, a minor fix of the FAQ is included.
Instead of copy-pasting the whole macro_rules! item from the original .rs file,
we serialize a separate name, attributes list, and body, the latter as
pretty-printed TTs. The compilation of macro_rules! macros is decoupled
somewhat from the expansion of macros in item position.
This filters out comments, and facilitates selective imports.

I've got a little todo list in the last commit of things I thought about/was told about that I haven't yet handled (I'd also like some feedback).
This implements RFC 179 by making the pattern `&<pat>` require matching
against a variable of type `&T`, and introducing the pattern `&mut
<pat>` which only works with variables of type `&mut T`.
The pattern `&mut x` currently parses as `&(mut x)` i.e. a pattern match
through a `&T` or a `&mut T` that binds the variable `x` to have type
`T` and to be mutable. This should be rewritten as follows, for example,

This removes a large array of deprecated functionality, regardless of how
recently it was deprecated. The purpose of this commit is to clean out the
standard libraries and compiler for the upcoming alpha release.
Some notable compiler changes were to enable warnings for all now-deprecated
command line arguments (previously the deprecated versions were silently
accepted) as well as removing deriving(Zero) entirely (the trait was removed).
The distribution no longer contains the libtime or libregex_macros crates. Both
of these have been deprecated for some time and are available externally.
This commit is an implementation of [RFC 503][rfc] which is a stabilization
story for the prelude. Most of the RFC was directly applied, removing reexports.
Some reexports are kept around, however:
* `range` remains until range syntax has landed to reduce churn.
* `Path` and `GenericPath` remain until path reform lands. This is done to
prevent many imports of `GenericPath` which will soon be removed.
* All `io` traits remain until I/O reform lands so imports can be rewritten all
at once to `std::io::prelude::*`.
This is a breaking change because many prelude reexports have been removed, and
the RFC can be consulted for the exact list of removed reexports, as well as to
find the locations of where to import them.

This is a [breaking-change]. The new rules require that, for an impl of a trait defined
in some other crate, two conditions must hold:
1. Some type must be local.
2. Every type parameter must appear "under" some local type.
Here are some examples that are legal:

// Here `T` appears "under' `MyStruct`.
impl<T> Clone for MyStruct<T> { }
// Here `T` appears "under' `MyStruct` as well. Note that it also appears
// elsewhere.

Here is an illegal example:

There are a couple of ways to rewrite this last example so that it is
legal:
1. In some cases, the uncovered type parameter (here, `U`) should be converted
into an associated type. This is however a non-local change that requires access
to the original trait. Also, associated types are not fully baked.
2. Add `U` as a type parameter of `MyStruct`:

3. Create a newtype wrapper for `U`

Because associated types are not fully baked, which in the case of the
`Hash` trait makes adhering to this rule impossible, you can
temporarily disable this rule in your crate by using
`#![feature(old_orphan_check)]`. Note that the `old_orphan_check`
feature will be removed before 1.0 is released.
This commit is an implementation of [RFC 526][rfc] which is a change to alter
the definition of the old `fmt::FormatWriter`. The new trait, renamed to
`Writer`, now only exposes one method `write_str` in order to guarantee that all
implementations of the formatting traits can only produce valid Unicode.

One of the primary improvements of this patch is the performance of the
`.to_string()` method by avoiding an almost-always redundant UTF-8 check. This
is a breaking change due to the renaming of the trait as well as the loss of the
`write` method, but migration paths should be relatively easy:
* All usage of `write` should move to `write_str`. If truly binary data was
being written in an implementation of `Show`, then it will need to use a
different trait or an altogether different code path.
* All usage of `write!` should continue to work as-is with no modifications.
* All usage of `Show` where implementations just delegate to another should

Rewrite associated types to use projection rather than dummy type parameters. This closes almost every (major) open issue, but I'm holding off on that until the code has landed and baked a bit. Probably it should have more tests, as well, but I wanted to get this landed as fast as possible so that we can collaborate on improving it.
The commit history is a little messy, particularly the merge commit at the end. If I get some time, I might just "reset" to the beginning and try to carve up the final state into logical pieces. Let me know if it seems hard to follow. By far the most crucial commit is "Implement associated type projection and normalization."

3. It made pretty-printing harder and in particular was causing bad error messages
when errors occurred before the `TypeParameterDef` entries were fully stored.
This commit adds support for the compiler to distinguish between different forms
of lookup paths in the compiler itself. Issue #19767 has some background on this
topic, as well as some sample bugs which can occur if these lookup paths are not
separated.
This commits extends the existing command line flag `-L` with the same trailing
syntax as the `-l` flag. Each argument to `-L` can now have a trailing `:all`,
`:native`, `:crate`, or `:dependency`. This suffix indicates what form of lookup
path the compiler should add the argument to. The `dependency` lookup path is
used when looking up crate dependencies, the `crate` lookup path is used when
looking for immediate dependencies (`extern crate` statements), and the `native`
lookup path is used for probing for native libraries to insert into rlibs. Paths
with `all` are used for all of these purposes (the default).
The default compiler lookup path (the rustlib libdir) is by default added to all
of these paths. Additionally, the `RUST_PATH` lookup path is added to all of
these paths.

This commit is a second pass stabilization for the `std::comm` module,
performing the following actions:
* The entire `std::comm` module was moved under `std::sync::mpsc`. This movement
reflects that channels are just yet another synchronization primitive, and
they don't necessarily deserve a special place outside of the other
concurrency primitives that the standard library offers.
* The `send` and `recv` methods have all been removed.
* The `send_opt` and `recv_opt` methods have been renamed to `send` and `recv`.
This means that all send/receive operations return a `Result` now indicating
whether the operation was successful or not.
* The error type of `send` is now a `SendError` to implement a custom error
message and allow for `unwrap()`. The error type contains an `into_inner`
method to extract the value.
* The error type of `recv` is now `RecvError` for the same reasons as `send`.
* The `TryRecvError` and `TrySendError` types have had public reexports removed
of their variants and the variant names have been tweaked with enum
namespacing rules.
* The `Messages` iterator is renamed to `Iter`

According to [RFC 344][], methods that return `&[u8]` should have names
ending in `bytes`. Though `include_bin!` is a macro not a method, it
seems reasonable to follow the convention anyway.
We keep the old name around for now, but trigger a deprecation warning

Rewrite how the HRTB algorithm matches impls against obligations. Instead of impls providing higher-ranked trait-references, impls now once again only have early-bound regions. The skolemization checks are thus moved out into trait matching itself. This allows to implement "perfect forwarding" impls like those described in #19730. This PR builds on a previous PR that was already reviewed by @pnkfelix.

This commit is part of a series that introduces a `std::thread` API to
replace `std::task`.
In the new API, `spawn` returns a `JoinGuard`, which by default will
join the spawned thread when dropped. It can also be used to join
explicitly at any time, returning the thread's result. Alternatively,
the spawned thread can be explicitly detached (so no join takes place).
As part of this change, Rust processes now terminate when the main
thread exits, even if other detached threads are still running, moving
Rust closer to standard threading models. This new behavior may break code
that was relying on the previously implicit join-all.
In addition to the above, the new thread API also offers some built-in
support for building blocking abstractions in user space; see the module
doc for details.

This change makes the compiler no longer infer whether types (structures
and enumerations) implement the `Copy` trait (and thus are implicitly
copyable). Rather, you must implement `Copy` yourself via `impl Copy for
MyType {}`.
A new warning has been added, `missing_copy_implementations`, to warn
you if a non-generic public type has been added that could have
implemented `Copy` but didn't.
For convenience, you may *temporarily* opt out of this behavior by using
`#![feature(opt_out_copy)]`. Note though that this feature gate will never be
accepted and will be removed by the time that 1.0 is released, so you should
transition your code away from using it.
This breaks code like:

The test harness will make sure that the panic message contains the
specified string. This is useful to help make `#[should_fail]` tests a
bit less brittle by decreasing the chance that the test isn't
"accidentally" passing due to a panic occurring earlier than expected.
The behavior is in some ways similar to JUnit's `expected` feature:
`@Test(expected=NullPointerException.class)`.
Without the message assertion, this test would pass even though it's not
actually reaching the intended part of the code:

We heavily rely on queries and fragments in the URL structure, so it is desired to preserve them even in the redirects. The generated redirect pages try to preserve them with scripts, which take precedence over the original `Refresh` metadata. Non-scripting browsers would continue to work (with no queries and fragments).
(This in turn solves a number of semi-broken links to the source code, which are actually linked to redirect pages.)
This series of commits deals with broken links to the source code. It also refactors some repetitive codes from Rustdoc. The most important commit, 1cb1f00d40, describes the rationale; this will fix a half of #16289. Other commits are reasonably independent to each other and can be made into indiviudal PRs at the request.
### Notes on the broken source links
As of bda97e8557 (I've used this to check the PR works as intended), there are 281 (!) such broken links. They can be further classified as follows:
* 178 links to incorrect item types. This is the first half of #16289, and this PR fixes all of them.
* 89 links to redirect pages. They are not technically "broken" but still doesn't give a source code. I have a fix for this in mind, which would make a redirect page slightly *fat*.
* 14 links to incorrect `DefId` in the `gotosrc` parameter. This is #15309, and affects many `liballoc` reexports in `libstd` but *nothing else* (curiously). I'm yet to track this down; might be a metadata bug (not sure).
* 0 links to the crate reexported as a different name. This is the second half of #16289, and seems not hard to fix but I'm running out of time.
Prevalence of this kind of bugs calls for a full link verifier integrated into the testing process. :S

Otherwise the generated documentation is 30% larger. The sidebar
renders an entry for each item to all items, so large modules have
O(n^2) items rendered in the sidebars. Not a correct solution, but
at least it works.
They are just (unsafe) functions and static items to most users
and even compilers! The metadata doesn't distinguish them, so Rustdoc
ended up producing broken links (generated `ffi.*.html`, links to
`fn.*.html`). It would be best to avoid this pitfall at all.

If the source code is in the parent dirs relative to the crate root,
`..` is replaced with `up` as expected. Any other error like non-UTF-8
paths or drive-relative paths falls back to the absolute path.
There might be a way to improve on false negatives, but this alone
should be enough for fixing #18370.
