d5d834551c rustc: Add a debug_assertions #[cfg] directive
This commit is an implementation of [RFC 563][rfc] which adds a new
`cfg(debug_assertions)` directive which is specially recognized and calculated
by the compiler. The flag is turned off at any optimization level greater than 1
and may also be explicitly controlled through the `-C debug-assertions`
flag.

[rfc]: https://github.com/rust-lang/rfcs/pull/563

The `debug_assert!` and `debug_assert_eq!` macros now respect this instead of
the `ndebug` variable and `ndebug` no longer holds any meaning to the standard
library.

Code which was previously relying on `not(ndebug)` to gate expensive code should
be updated to rely on `debug_assertions` instead.

ad14891957 std: Stabilize the env module
Now that the `std::env` module has had some time to bake this commit marks most
of its APIs as `#[stable]`. Some notable APIs that are **not** stable (and still
use the same `env` feature gate) are:

* `{set,get}_exit_status` - there are still questions about whether this is the
  right interface for setting/getting the exit status of a process.
* `page_size` - this may change location in the future or perhaps name as well.

This also effectively closes as the variants of `VarError` are
`#[stable]` now. (this is done intentionally)

a2ebb24ee6 std: Rename io/path features with old_ prefix
This commit renames the features for the `std::old_io` and `std::old_path`
modules to `old_io` and `old_path` to help facilitate migration to the new APIs.

This is a breaking change as crates which mention the old feature names now need
to be renamed to use the new feature names.

a828e79480 std: Tweak the std::env OsString/String interface
This commit tweaks the interface of the `std::env` module to make it more
ergonomic for common usage:

* `env::var` was renamed to `env::var_os`
* `env::var_string` was renamed to `env::var`
* `env::args` was renamed to `env::args_os`
* `env::args` was re-added as a panicking iterator over string values
* `env::vars` was renamed to `env::vars_os`
* `env::vars` was re-added as a panicking iterator over string values.

This should make common usage (e.g. unicode values everywhere) more ergonomic
as well as "the default". This is also a breaking change due to the differences
of what's yielded from each of these functions, but migration should be fairly
easy as the defaults operate over `String` which is a common type to use.

70ed3a48df std: Add a new env module
This is an implementation of [RFC 578][rfc] which adds a new `std::env` module
to replace most of the functionality in the current `std::os` module. More
details can be found in the RFC itself, but as a summary the following methods
have all been deprecated:

[rfc]: https://github.com/rust-lang/rfcs/pull/578

* `os::args_as_bytes`   => `env::args`
* `os::args`            => `env::args`
* `os::consts`          => `env::consts`
* `os::dll_filename`    => no replacement, use `env::consts` directly
* `os::page_size`       => `env::page_size`
* `os::make_absolute`   => use `env::current_dir` + `join` instead
* `os::getcwd`          => `env::current_dir`
* `os::change_dir`      => `env::set_current_dir`
* `os::homedir`         => `env::home_dir`
* `os::tmpdir`          => `env::temp_dir`
* `os::join_paths`      => `env::join_paths`
* `os::split_paths`     => `env::split_paths`
* `os::self_exe_name`   => `env::current_exe`
* `os::self_exe_path`   => use `env::current_exe` + `pop`
* `os::set_exit_status` => `env::set_exit_status`
* `os::get_exit_status` => `env::get_exit_status`
* `os::env`             => `env::vars`
* `os::env_as_bytes`    => `env::vars`
* `os::getenv`          => `env::var` or `env::var_string`
* `os::getenv_as_bytes` => `env::var`
* `os::setenv`          => `env::set_var`
* `os::unsetenv`        => `env::remove_var`

Many function signatures have also been tweaked for various purposes, but the
main changes were:

* `Vec`-returning APIs now all return iterators instead
* All APIs are now centered around `OsString` instead of `Vec<u8>` or `String`.
  There is currently on convenience API, `env::var_string`, which can be used to
  get the value of an environment variable as a unicode `String`.

All old APIs are `#[deprecated]` in-place and will remain for some time to allow
for migrations. The semantics of the APIs have been tweaked slightly with regard
to dealing with invalid unicode (panic instead of replacement).

The new `std::env` module is all contained within the `env` feature, so crates
must add the following to access the new APIs:

    #![feature(env)]

0cdde6e5e0 std: Stabilize FromStr and parse
This commits adds an associated type to the `FromStr` trait representing an
error payload for parses which do not succeed. The previous return value,
`Option<Self>` did not allow for this form of payload. After the associated type
was added, the following attributes were applied:

* `FromStr` is now stable
* `FromStr::Err` is now stable
* `FromStr::from_str` is now stable
* `StrExt::parse` is now stable
* `FromStr for bool` is now stable
* `FromStr for $float` is now stable
* `FromStr for $integral` is now stable
* Errors returned from stable `FromStr` implementations are stable
* Errors implement `Display` and `Error` (both impl blocks being `#[stable]`)

6c29708bf9 regex: Remove in-tree version
The regex library was largely used for non-critical aspects of the compiler and
various external tooling. The library at this point is duplicated with its
out-of-tree counterpart and as such imposes a bit of a maintenance overhead as
well as compile time hit for the compiler itself.

The last major user of the regex library is the libtest library, using regexes
for filters when running tests. This removal means that the filtering has gone
back to substring matching rather than using regexes.

3cb9fa26ef std: Rename Show/String to Debug/Display
This commit is an implementation of [RFC 565][rfc] which is a stabilization of
the `std::fmt` module and the implementations of various formatting traits.
Specifically, the following changes were performed:

[rfc]: https://github.com/rust-lang/rfcs/blob/master/text/0565-show-string-guidelines.md

* The `Show` trait is now deprecated, it was renamed to `Debug`
* The `String` trait is now deprecated, it was renamed to `Display`
* Many `Debug` and `Display` implementations were audited in accordance with the
  RFC and audited implementations now have the `#[stable]` attribute
  * Integers and floats no longer print a suffix
  * Smart pointers no longer print details that they are a smart pointer
  * Paths with `Debug` are now quoted and escape characters
* The `unwrap` methods on `Result` now require `Display` instead of `Debug`
* The `Error` trait no longer has a `detail` method and now requires that
  `Display` must be implemented. With the loss of `String`, this has moved into
  libcore.
* `impl<E: Error> FromError<E> for Box<Error>` now exists
* `derive(Show)` has been renamed to `derive(Debug)`. This is not currently
  warned about due to warnings being emitted on stage1+

While backwards compatibility is attempted to be maintained with a blanket
implementation of `Display` for the old `String` trait (and the same for
`Show`/`Debug`) this is still a breaking change due to primitives no longer
implementing `String` as well as modifications such as `unwrap` and the `Error`
trait. Most code is fairly straightforward to update with a rename or tweaks of
method calls.

1f70acbf4c Improvements to feature staging
This gets rid of the 'experimental' level, removes the non-staged_api
case (i.e. stability levels for out-of-tree crates), and lets the
staged_api attributes use 'unstable' and 'deprecated' lints.

This makes the transition period to the full feature staging design
a bit nicer.

c27133e2ce Preliminary feature staging
This partially implements the feature staging described in the
[release channel RFC][rc]. It does not yet fully conform to the RFC as
written, but does accomplish its goals sufficiently for the 1.0 alpha
release.

It has three primary user-visible effects:

* On the nightly channel, use of unstable APIs generates a warning.
* On the beta channel, use of unstable APIs generates a warning.
* On the beta channel, use of feature gates generates a warning.

Code that does not trigger these warnings is considered 'stable',
modulo pre-1.0 bugs.

Disabling the warnings for unstable APIs continues to be done in the
existing (i.e. old) style, via `#[allow(...)]`, not that specified in
the RFC. I deem this marginally acceptable since any code that must do
this is not using the stable dialect of Rust.

Use of feature gates is itself gated with the new 'unstable_features'
lint, on nightly set to 'allow', and on beta 'warn'.

The attribute scheme used here corresponds to an older version of the
RFC, with the `#[staged_api]` crate attribute toggling the staging
behavior of the stability attributes, but the user impact is only
in-tree so I'm not concerned about having to make design changes later
(and I may ultimately prefer the scheme here after all, with the
`#[staged_api]` crate attribute).

Since the Rust codebase itself makes use of unstable features the
compiler and build system to a midly elaborate dance to allow it to
bootstrap while disobeying these lints (which would otherwise be
errors because Rust builds with `-D warnings`).

This patch includes one significant hack that causes a
regression. Because the `format_args!` macro emits calls to unstable
APIs it would trigger the lint. I added a hack to the lint to make it
not trigger, but this in turn causes arguments to `println!` not to be
checked for feature gates. I don't presently understand macro
expansion well enough to fix. This is bug .

44440e5c18 core: split into fmt::Show and fmt::String
fmt::Show is for debugging, and can and should be implemented for
all public types. This trait is used with `{:?}` syntax. There still
exists #[derive(Show)].

fmt::String is for types that faithfully be represented as a String.
Because of this, there is no way to derive fmt::String, all
implementations must be purposeful. It is used by the default format
syntax, `{}`.

This will break most instances of `{}`, since that now requires the type
to impl fmt::String. In most cases, replacing `{}` with `{:?}` is the
correct fix. Types that were being printed specifically for users should
receive a fmt::String implementation to fix this.

f3a7ec7028 std: Second pass stabilization of sync
This pass performs a second pass of stabilization through the `std::sync`
module, avoiding modules/types that are being handled in other PRs (e.g.
mutexes, rwlocks, condvars, and channels).

The following items are now stable

* `sync::atomic`
* `sync::atomic::ATOMIC_BOOL_INIT` (was `INIT_ATOMIC_BOOL`)
* `sync::atomic::ATOMIC_INT_INIT` (was `INIT_ATOMIC_INT`)
* `sync::atomic::ATOMIC_UINT_INIT` (was `INIT_ATOMIC_UINT`)
* `sync::Once`
* `sync::ONCE_INIT`
* `sync::Once::call_once` (was `doit`)
  * C == `pthread_once(..)`
  * Boost == `call_once(..)`
  * Windows == `InitOnceExecuteOnce`
* `sync::Barrier`
* `sync::Barrier::new`
* `sync::Barrier::wait` (now returns a `bool`)
* `sync::Semaphore::new`
* `sync::Semaphore::acquire`
* `sync::Semaphore::release`

The following items remain unstable

* `sync::SemaphoreGuard`
* `sync::Semaphore::access` - it's unclear how this relates to the poisoning
                              story of mutexes.
* `sync::TaskPool` - the semantics of a failing task and whether a thread is
                     re-attached to a thread pool are somewhat unclear, and the
                     utility of this type in `sync` is question with respect to
                     the jobs of other primitives. This type will likely become
                     stable or move out of the standard library over time.
* `sync::Future` - futures as-is have yet to be deeply re-evaluated with the
                   recent core changes to Rust's synchronization story, and will
                   likely become stable in the future but are unstable until
                   that time comes.

9e224c2bf1 std: Re-enable at_exit()
The new semantics of this function are that the callbacks are run when the *main
thread* exits, not when all threads have exited. This implies that other threads
may still be running when the `at_exit` callbacks are invoked and users need to
be prepared for this situation.

Users in the standard library have been audited in accordance to these new rules
as well.

ddb2466f6a librustc: Always parse macro!()/macro![] as expressions if not
followed by a semicolon.

This allows code like `vec![1i, 2, 3].len();` to work.

This breaks code that uses macros as statements without putting
semicolons after them, such as:

    fn main() {
        ...
        assert!(a == b)
        assert!(c == d)
        println(...);
    }

It also breaks code that uses macros as items without semicolons:

    local_data_key!(foo)

    fn main() {
        println("hello world")
    }

Add semicolons to fix this code. Those two examples can be fixed as
follows:

    fn main() {
        ...
        assert!(a == b);
        assert!(c == d);
        println(...);
    }

    local_data_key!(foo);

096a28607f librustc: Make Copy opt-in.
This change makes the compiler no longer infer whether types (structures
and enumerations) implement the `Copy` trait (and thus are implicitly
copyable). Rather, you must implement `Copy` yourself via `impl Copy for
MyType {}`.

A new warning has been added, `missing_copy_implementations`, to warn
you if a non-generic public type has been added that could have
implemented `Copy` but didn't.

For convenience, you may *temporarily* opt out of this behavior by using
`#![feature(opt_out_copy)]`. Note though that this feature gate will never be
accepted and will be removed by the time that 1.0 is released, so you should
transition your code away from using it.

This breaks code like:

    #[deriving(Show)]
    struct Point2D {
        x: int,
        y: int,
    }

    fn main() {
        let mypoint = Point2D {
            x: 1,
            y: 1,
        };
        let otherpoint = mypoint;
        println!("{}{}", mypoint, otherpoint);
    }

Change this code to:

    #[deriving(Show)]
    struct Point2D {
        x: int,
        y: int,
    }

    impl Copy for Point2D {}

    fn main() {
        let mypoint = Point2D {
            x: 1,
            y: 1,
        };
        let otherpoint = mypoint;
        println!("{}{}", mypoint, otherpoint);
    }

This is the backwards-incompatible part of .

a9c1152c4b std: Add a new top-level thread_local module
This commit removes the `std::local_data` module in favor of a new
`std::thread_local` module providing thread local storage. The module provides
two variants of TLS: one which owns its contents and one which is based on
scoped references. Each implementation has pros and cons listed in the
documentation.

Both flavors have accessors through a function called `with` which yield a
reference to a closure provided. Both flavors also panic if a reference cannot
be yielded and provide a function to test whether an access would panic or not.
This is an implementation of [RFC 461][rfc] and full details can be found in
that RFC.

This is a breaking change due to the removal of the `std::local_data` module.
All users can migrate to the new thread local system like so:

    thread_local!(static FOO: Rc<RefCell<Option<T>>> = Rc::new(RefCell::new(None)))

The old `local_data` module inherently contained the `Rc<RefCell<Option<T>>>` as
an implementation detail which must now be explicitly stated by users.

4af3494bb0 std: Stabilize std::fmt
This commit applies the stabilization of std::fmt as outlined in [RFC 380][rfc].
There are a number of breaking changes as a part of this commit which will need
to be handled to migrated old code:

* A number of formatting traits have been removed: String, Bool, Char, Unsigned,
  Signed, and Float. It is recommended to instead use Show wherever possible or
  to use adaptor structs to implement other methods of formatting.

* The format specifier for Boolean has changed from `t` to `b`.

* The enum `FormatError` has been renamed to `Error` as well as becoming a unit
  struct instead of an enum. The `WriteError` variant no longer exists.

* The `format_args_method!` macro has been removed with no replacement. Alter
  code to use the `format_args!` macro instead.

* The public fields of a `Formatter` have become read-only with no replacement.
  Use a new formatting string to alter the formatting flags in combination with
  the `write!` macro. The fields can be accessed through accessor methods on the
  `Formatter` structure.

Other than these breaking changes, the contents of std::fmt should now also all
contain stability markers. Most of them are still #[unstable] or #[experimental]

7828c3dd28 Rename fail! to panic!
https://github.com/rust-lang/rfcs/pull/221

The current terminology of "task failure" often causes problems when
writing or speaking about code. You often want to talk about the
possibility of an operation that returns a Result "failing", but cannot
because of the ambiguity with task failure. Instead, you have to speak
of "the failing case" or "when the operation does not succeed" or other
circumlocutions.

Likewise, we use a "Failure" header in rustdoc to describe when
operations may fail the task, but it would often be helpful to separate
out a section describing the "Err-producing" case.

We have been steadily moving away from task failure and toward Result as
an error-handling mechanism, so we should optimize our terminology
accordingly: Result-producing functions should be easy to describe.

To update your code, rename any call to `fail!` to `panic!` instead.
Assuming you have not created your own macro named `panic!`, this
will work on UNIX based systems:

    grep -lZR 'fail!' . | xargs -0 -l sed -i -e 's/fail!/panic!/g'

You can of course also do this by hand.

f9fc49c06e auto merge of : alexcrichton/rust/issue-17718, r=pcwalton
This change is an implementation of [RFC 69][rfc] which adds a third kind of
global to the language, `const`. This global is most similar to what the old
`static` was, and if you're unsure about what to use then you should use a
`const`.

The semantics of these three kinds of globals are:

* A `const` does not represent a memory location, but only a value. Constants
  are translated as rvalues, which means that their values are directly inlined
  at usage location (similar to a #define in C/C++). Constant values are, well,
  constant, and can not be modified. Any "modification" is actually a
  modification to a local value on the stack rather than the actual constant
  itself.

  Almost all values are allowed inside constants, whether they have interior
  mutability or not. There are a few minor restrictions listed in the RFC, but
  they should in general not come up too often.

* A `static` now always represents a memory location (unconditionally). Any
  references to the same `static` are actually a reference to the same memory
  location. Only values whose types ascribe to `Sync` are allowed in a `static`.
  This restriction is in place because many threads may access a `static`
  concurrently. Lifting this restriction (and allowing unsafe access) is a
  future extension not implemented at this time.

* A `static mut` continues to always represent a memory location. All references
  to a `static mut` continue to be `unsafe`.

This is a large breaking change, and many programs will need to be updated
accordingly. A summary of the breaking changes is:

* Statics may no longer be used in patterns. Statics now always represent a
  memory location, which can sometimes be modified. To fix code, repurpose the
  matched-on-`static` to a `const`.

      static FOO: uint = 4;
      match n {
          FOO => { /* ... */ }
          _ => { /* ... */ }
      }

  change this code to:

      const FOO: uint = 4;
      match n {
          FOO => { /* ... */ }
          _ => { /* ... */ }
      }

* Statics may no longer refer to other statics by value. Due to statics being
  able to change at runtime, allowing them to reference one another could
  possibly lead to confusing semantics. If you are in this situation, use a
  constant initializer instead. Note, however, that statics may reference other
  statics by address, however.

* Statics may no longer be used in constant expressions, such as array lengths.
  This is due to the same restrictions as listed above. Use a `const` instead.

00ff5aac4e Rename RawPtr::to_option() to RawPtr::as_ref()
As outlined in

  https://aturon.github.io/style/naming/conversions.html

`to_` functions names should only be used for expensive operations.
Thus `to_option` is better named `as_option`. Also, putting type
names into method names is considered bad style; what the user is
really trying to get is a reference. This `as_ref` is even better.

Also, we are missing a mutable version of this method. So add a
new trait `RawMutPtr` with a corresponding `as_mut` methode.

Finally, there is a bug in the signature of `to_option` which has
been around since lifetime elision: originally the returned reference
had 'static lifetime, but since the elision changes this become
the lifetime of the raw pointer (which does not make sense, since
the pointer lifetime and referent lifetime are unrelated). Fix
the bug to return a reference with a fresh lifetime (which will
be inferred from the calling context).
